What a great program. Thanks, Chris. I've managed to track down some problems and remove them. My laptop boots much quicker now. Definitely recommend this program

Hi guys, Is there any way of tracking what a computer does and when during startup? Like a real-time view when windows starts? Thing is, my laptop takes forever to boot up and I want to know what's going on. I've tried disabling start up options in msconfig but still can't pin it down. I was hoping, if I could see what was happening in real-time on my screen, I could find out what it was doing. Thanks.

We don't enable it because kids sent each other messages using it through hyperlinking in Microsoft Word

We have the Messenger service disabled on most of our workstations. Following on from the OP's question, is there any software out there that doesn't need installation on workstation and yet can still send messages when the Messenger service is disabled?

We use mandatory profiles so, in OpenOffice, I'd go to Tools > Options > Load/Save > General and set your saving preferences at the bottom. If this is done in the profile then it should be set for all who log on. I've done it in a test scenario and it seems to have worked.

Applied the Nov release last night and all seems hunky-dorey so far. (famous last words)

Are the days of "Scroll Lock" numbered?

Wow... I started this thread in reference to one key. Now I've found loads of uses for others! EduGeekers are my friends -
Are the days of "Scroll Lock" numbered?
WithoutMotive replied to WithoutMotive's topic in General Chat
LOL... I was thinking how random it was myself. I accidentally hit it instead of Print Screen and thought, "I've never used that key for ANY purpose. What a waste of key and LED.......... I should post this on various online forums" -
I don't think I've EVER used Scroll Lock. I've heard it's still used in Excel sometimes but otherwise, is there much use for it anymore? EDIT: Just had a look [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scroll_lock]here[/ame] and found very few uses for it.

Free 1GB Memory Sticks for Teachers & School Staff
WithoutMotive replied to jamin100's topic in General Chat
I've just come across an article in Computer Active's latest issue about this. They were advertising the site and, apparently, the sticks are 2GB but I was thinking of having a go but I think I'll wait until after Christmas and try for one myself. -
Just checked my work email and have been given the green light to install the November Update. Ours goes to the LA first for them to fiddle about with first. I'm sure it gets to us more broken than it was.

[website] Do you qualify to come to the UK?
WithoutMotive replied to somabc's topic in Jokes/Interweb Things
I don't qualify 15 points short. -
Very true. Was just an idea.

Create a webpage with a message for the admins on their school webserver. Forward the address to the admins. That would surely verify identity. On the registration for Edugeek: "If you are a tech, please place this code somewhere on your school/company website and type the address in the box below. This will verify your identity as a genuine tech and you will have access to more secure areas of the Edugeek Forums. Once you are verified, you are free to remove this page." Just an idea. No more work for the Admins other than verify the page exists for tech registrations

I use Elements for more professional stuff. Works a treat and I love working with it. Colleague is currently trialling Serif's MoviePlus.

We're quite happy with Print Manager Plus at the moment. No complaints. EDIT: I'm glad this thread came along. I've just realised our maintenance for Print Manager Plus has run out. LOL

classroom management software required

Impero all the way! -
I've added those so far to the Wiki, GrumbleDook

Not that I'm going to defect from EduGeek because it's, by far, the very best of technical resources ... ... but what other forums are people a member of? You can't have too many resources

Hi guys, We had a situation the other day where the DAT72 tape in our Dell PowerEdge 1800 server kept hold of a tape and wouldn't let it go. I had to perform a forced eject (holding the eject button until the tape came out). Me thinking all was fine after that, I put in the tape for the next day backup. Came in this morning to find no backup done and the previous day's tape marked as loaded. I ejected the tape that was in the drive and STILL the previous day's tape was marked as loaded. So now there's no tape's in the drive and yet I'm told there is. Anyone know how I can force this tape to unload? Thanks.

The suggestion in your link about turning off the overlay in Windows Media Player was, by far, the easier option for the staff member. Thanks very much for everyone's suggestions.

A teacher wants to take a screenshot from a piece of film she's playing in Windows Media Player. Straight away I suggested to pause the film, hit Print Screen, paste into Paint, save as JPG. Weirdly, when pasted into Paint, the video itself isn't there. Just the shot of Windows media player as an outline. Even weirder, if I switch back to WMP and play the video again, it plays in Paint, too! How can I get the shot of the video? I can do it with Premier Elements but I need something simple for a teacher. Thanks.
