We use Eclipse and have had no trouble with it in few years we've had it.

Without giving me the opportunity to take a look at it first (typical), my school has invested in Kaleidos - another virtual teaching environment thingy by RM. I've had a brief look but was wondering if anyone else uses this and how they find it. Apparently, it's a big hit in some places :?

I personally use FoxIt Reader to read PDF documents. It's quick and easy and comes as a single small executable so can be put on a memory stick, etc.

Yes, everything is set up, as far as I can tell, in both Real Player and ISA Server. I've set the proxy in Real Player to take it from IE (which is obviously the ISA Server) but it still won't let it through.

We're having real trouble (haha) getting Real Player to function, i.e. streaming BBC footage, etc. Teachers are always keen to use BBC footage for various subjects and I've been trying to get it working for a while. I've instructed ISA Server to allow all the Real protocols but it's still not working. Is there something else I should be allowing?

OK... any indications how and what I need to do? Never done that before.

Right, a problem that's been annoying me for some time. My laptop has a cable connection to one of our networks and a wireless connection to another (all secure so nothing wrong with it on that score). The cabled connection goes through our internal proxy. The wireless connection runs through an external proxy. Internet explorer won't let me connect to the internet through the wireless connection unless I disable the cabled connection. Setting the proxy to the internal works fine... setting to external, doesn't like it. It seems it has a preference for the cabled connection and there for tries to find the external proxy, which it can't, hence why I have to disable the cabled connection. Is there any way I can "make" Internet Explorer prefer the wireless nic for its internet connection?

Teacher's Desktop never used to work with me so we didn't bother in the end. Apparently, there's nothing major happening with Teacher's Desktop until October and, correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't even think its supported by the new Profiles 7.

I cannot for the life of me remember how this is done manually... Creating a shortcut in the start menu which will map an image on the CDServer to a virtual drive then run an application from the image. The basics, as I recall are: C:\Program Files\ If anyone could shed any light asap it would be most appreciated. I know it can be done from the Avantis client but, for the purposes of tweaking, I'd like to remember how to do it manually. Many thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion but problem has been solved now. It turned out to be a combination of setting the "slow network detection" setting and also disabling the "Turn on Classic Shell" setting. Many thanks again.

We have a number of laptops wireless connected to our domain. Under normal circumstances, from a normal workstation, when a student logs on they would pull policies from their STUDENT OU which includes a custom desktop wallpaper. These laptops, however, have their own WLAPTOPS OU in which the laptop computer accounts sit. When logged on, they pull their own policies including a different desktop specific to the laptops. Recently, these laptops have pulled everything from this OU correctly, apart from the wallpaper. The start menu is correct. The desktop items are correct but only the wallpaper is wrong. Removing the laptops from the WLAPTOPS and putting them with the rest of the computer accounts, they do as they're told and pull policies from the STUDENT OU whenever a student logs on. Stick them in the WLAPTOPS OU and they get nothing. To find out what could be wrong, we created another OU to put the laptops in. Altered the required wallpaper and put the laptops in there. Correct Start Menu. Correct icons.......... STUDENT desktop!!! WHY would they stick to the OU policies they should APART from the desktop wallpaper?! Is there something we're not checking?! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using Windows Server 2003 and roaming profiles. Is there any way to exclude the roaming profile from the disk quotas? In fact, is there the ability to exclude any folder from the disk quota function? Many thanks for any help, Paul

I need a solution to this problem as a matter of urgency. Teacher's Desktop has been running happily for our users until recently when some of the laptops have been hanging when synchronising from offline to online. The green progress bar has been almost getting to the end and then nothing happens. Suggestions from our LEA SIMS Support include detaching and re-attaching the local database (did not work) or making a copy of the database and attaching to that instead (still not tried). I have just been wondering whether anyone else has ever had this problem and whether there is a quick solution. I am seriously panicking about this now because staff are due to have their Year 7 reports in this week and a number of them have spent a long time at home doing them on the laptops. If anyone can offer any help, I will be most grateful.

Thanks for all your input... however, I've just found an article on Capitas support website that seemed to do the trick. Posting it here in case anyone else has the same problem ever: KB24748 - Backup failed unlocking database Created 27/05/2004 Last Updated 24/02/2006 Affected Products SIMS .net Installation & Upgrade Notes Backup failed Unlocking database Error occurs when a backup is being performed before the SQL database is upgraded. Additional Notes CAUSES 1. The backup fails due to insufficient space on the server. Or 2. The SQL log file is so large that there is insufficient space to create the backup. 3. Full SQL has been installed on 2 seperate drives eg Program Folders on C: and Data & Backup folders on D:. SIMS has been coded to use a default installation of SQL ie All folders installed to one location and therefore fails when it tries to access the Backup folder. Or 4. SIMS Infrastructure has not been installed and therefore the backup file cannot be zipped as Dynazip is missing. Advice FIX 1: Check there is sufficient space on the partition where SQL is installed. Also check the system partition has sufficient space as temporary files can be created during the backup. FIX 2: Check the size of the SQL Log file eg SIMS.LDF. If excessively large use SHRINKDBLOG.BAT to shrink the log file. FIX 3: Workaround: Take a copy of the sims.mdf and sims.ldf. This will act as the backup for the upgrade. At a dos prompt change directory to the location of SQL eg C:\program files\Microsoft SQL server\MSSQL$SIMS\binn. Then type DBUPGRADE /NOBACKUP This will run the DBUpgrade Tool and the /nobackup switch will upgrade the database with no backup. FIX 4: Install SIMS Infrastructure.

I was just about to do the February upgrade today via SOLUS. This being the best time as it's half term. As always, I backup the database from System Manager first. Usually goes ok, however, today I had a message saying that the "Operation cannot complete when the object is closed" and the backup is abandoned. On running SOLUS, the download goes ok and the upgrade is fine until the actual database upgrade when it automatically start backing it up first. At this point, it told me that the database was locked and it cannot be backed up. Now, as it's half term, I was the only one in the building apart from the caretaker so there was definitely no one logged into SIMS .Net. All the computers were off. So how was the database locked and how to I stop this from happening in the future? I had to backup the database files manually and run DBUPGRADE /NOBACKUP to complete the upgrade. Any advice would be appreciated.
