  1. I have got squid up and running in transparent mode on one interface working great. However the problem I had envisaged is as expected. I have set the X-Forwarded-For directive to Truncate, but the UTM (its a Fortinet device) doesnt seem to recognise it. I get the NTLM popup for authentication the first time a client tries to access the internet, but this just associates that user with the IP of the squid box and every subsequent client is logged against this initial user. Am I at a dead end here or is there anything I might be able to do to have a webcache in place without using it as a proxy ?
  2. Is there anyone else here using Overdrive? We are looking at it and wondering how it will link into our existing Oliver server.
  3. Im not sure if its the correct way to do it but if i need a post edited i "report' the post and ask a mod to edit it for me. While this makes extra work for the mods, and im not entirely sure of the reasoning behind it but im sure @ZeroHour has his reasons.
  4. this is a 'feature' edit disappears after x number of hours/days etc.
  5. No idea to be honest. Perhaps open a ticket with their support? It has got a lot better in recent years.
  6. I have just tried to open a users mailbox using the "open other mailbox" and get the exact same message. I haven't used that method previously so cant comment if it used to work or not. Do you need to manually add full access permissions to these new accounts perhaps? Add-MailboxPermission [email protected] -User [email protected] -AccessRights fullaccess
  7. So when you login to eduadmin.live.com and click on users and groups it doesnt take you into the admin console? Or is it only when you are trying to access the actual mailbox of the admin account?
  8. even though Ive only got a 3 series, will they let me in?
  9. if the printer is set to B+W print by default, they shouldnt be able to change it to colour as this would involve 'manage printer' permissions. You need to ensure the default is set both at General -> Preferneces and also at Advanced -> Printing Defaults (I think!)
  10. if you set the default to B+W you can then use the printer permissions to disallow students from changing the settings (assuming windows here) in the printer security ysettings
  11. Installed win8 release preview but cant seem to get any wireless driver working? Which did you use @AngryTechnician? ALso, i tried to install that BIOS A04 within win8 but it didnt work. Does it need to run from w7?
  12. I did it. But Im not entirely sure I understand how I did it.
  13. Thanks @bmdixon @SYNACK its a 94 BMW 325i wouldnt mind being able to find the connection for it to reset the service lights etc
  14. my car is old (94) would it have any sort of info?
  15. Looking for a recommendation for an App that I can use to keep track of my petrol consumption. Like I update it whenever I fill up with how many Litres, the cost, etc and it will show me the MPL etc and average spend etc Does anyone have such a thing?
  16. we have 3 classes piloting tablets (slates?) using the Dell Latitude ST running windows 7 enterprise. Ive got the results of the trial from the teachers/classroom point of view, Ill post them up here tomorrow if I can get permission. Otherwise ill just quote some snippets.
  17. the UTM is at the other end of an IPSec VPN over a slow ADSL. I want to put a local cache at the slow end. It will be NTLM auth as I dont think the FSAE collector works over the VPN.
  18. Ive just thought of a flaw in my plan. The reason Ive said I wasnt concerned about filtering/logging/authentication is because we have a UTM appliance box that does all this. But this does it based on IP address and usernames, however if this box sees all the web traffic only coming from 1 IP (the squid box) its going to break authentication etc. Is there any way with squid to pass the source IP from the client through the proxy to the UTM appliance?
  19. this is just for a remote site with a very slow internet connection, with an unmanaged 3com switch, a couple of APs and 30 laptops. I want transparent - not to set any browser settings for proxy. I just want to drop this box in between the switch and the internet to be a simple webcache, and the laptops use this as thier Default GW. Not fussed if 443 isnt cached. Its just really to save bandwidth and speed up browsing. 20GB is the size of the entire HDD Thanks for letting me know youtube will work. Had read that due to the dynamic CDN and random strings in the URLs it didnt work.
  20. im attempting to use squid in transparent proxy mode simply as a cache for a slow internet link. Dont need any filterring / logging / authentication etc. Do i actually need 2 network interfaces? Do i need 2 network cards or can I create a virtual sub interface? Can squid cache youtube? Ive read mixed reports. Is 20GB enough for a cache for 60 users? Is 512MB RAM enough for the box running ubuntu server? Cheers
  21. speaking of site hacks.. did we ever get a post about what happened to a certain IT Pro Life Line site?
  22. @Ric_ I reckon I've already covered those points in my proposal as advantages, not sure if ive added them above but thanks... also what happens to a usb handset if the pc is shut down ? does it jsut go to voicemail? how does QoS work for a usb phone that just shares the network connection with its host (guessing here) regarding a pstn gateway the cost of implenting a FOSS option like asterick Vs the hardware lync box it is favourable to go down the lync option
  23. Yep step 1 is to prove why a VOIP solution is the way to go and then step 2 will be to present the other options for providers of PBX systems of which Lync is my favored option for your reasons To be honest, @glennda pointing out that we are not going to have to spend circa 20 grand on additional switches is probably the winner here. @Ric_ what hardware phones are compatible with Lync and is there an AC adapter available can you confirm?
  24. thanks Geoff i had already included the fact that costs of calls will be cheaper but the intra-site free calls is a valid point which i have added. What I am really looking for is a 'wow' factor. What would a sales person pitch to promote VOIP that would make someone want it? All ive really heard so far is a 'only go to it if you really need to replace your existing system' which to me isnt very pro-voip I want to be pushing boundaries and forward thinking and have a good visionary bursar but there needs to be proper justification to splash the cash.. what about manageability? day to day running? etc
