we only bought ours as a pilot scheme and also to jump onto the tablet bandwagon. IVe given a USB with todays windows 8 preview release to be installed onto them but will see how it goes. I couldnt get the consumer install to work when trying the windows 7 drivers for it so hoefully its got some proper windows 8 drivers. I saw the windows 8 dell slate spec on the register and it didnt look much different to these.

money isnt really a sticking point to be honest its just ourcurrent system short circuits every time there is an electrcial storm and we are looking to replace it completely. I have simply been asked why to go to a VOIP solution (which would mean we would need to replace lots of old non-poe switches with POE ones at an added expense) rather than just a non VOIP. I really hate how its not possible to edit a post in this place, but I will add the following points to my original post: Client available for smartphones It is future-proof and it is cutting edge technology Once I have provided a valid arguement that VOIP is the way to go I will then be looking at providers etc but my inclination as an EES house is to go with a full Lync PBX solution

So there are oodles of threads on here talking about various providers of VOIP, PBX, etc, but I have been tasked with a simple question. Why do we need to replace our existing system with a VOIP? So without talking about vendors or different types Im just trying to put together a case for why we should invest in a new solution: This is what i have so far but could use more please: VOIP will use our existing network, wherever there is a data port (as long as it is POE) you can plug in a VOIP Phone Voicemail, Caller ID, conferencing, forwarding (which our current system can do but not on all exensions) Userswill have more ways to stay connected - By using "presence" technology, you'll be able to see if the users are available and how to get in touch with them With unified communications (part of VOIP technology), easy to work remotely from any place with an Internet connection, and have access to the phone system (make a local sydney - sydney call from the USA by using the VOIP over VPN) What else is there.

Ive got a 98 box that uses a SAS Database and printing from that database basically outputs directly to a LTP port. I would virtualize the machine in a minute to get it off the dodgy hardware its running on but I dont know how to emulate a LPT port in hyperV. Also if anyone has any suggestions about getting the old Dos based SAS application to run on windows 7 Id love to hear it

There is a lot of food for thought in this thread, but before I try anything else I would like to comment on @Michael here. I have gone to this location and am surprised to see old Domain Controllers that were demoted long ago. Although they have no NTDS info under them, they are still listed. Should i just delete them from here? Replicating from each of the 3 to their other 2 completed without errors.

Ive just ordered another 30 Aps to pretty much do 1 AP per classroom at the moment its 2 APs for every 3 classrooms. Ive also recently just audited all the channels as our system doesn't seem to adjust the channels of each AP automatically depending on the surroundings, even when set to channel "auto", and have removed hopefully some interderence from AP channel overlap. Regarding @Michael how would I check if they are replicating correctly ? Is SCOM something i should be looking at to help me audit the event logs of all my servers? @SYNACK thanks I have tried this method on a couple of troublesome devices, eg. our Dell Latitude ST slates which are up to date with the latest driver on the dell website. STP is enabled on all of our switches, I have not heard of RSTP/Portfast I dont think. The desktops experinecing issues seem to mainly be Dell Optiplex which are GBE but Im unsure of the chipet off the top of my head

We use sophos. I haven't bothered updating the Enterprise Console in a while (4.7 i think atm) as the plan is to go with SCCM 2012 as soon as I get time. And as you say, the problem isn't consistent, a few tries after the machine starts up and it logs in OK. I wonder if it could be the same here. Do you have any other anecdotal evidence @FN-GM, DNS is fine, Ive made sure the 3 DC's are the only DNS servers. @SYNACK thanks, I will test that out. Not sure what would cause that on a wired client altough I will check to see if there are any startup scripts happening.

I am seeing this on my network a lot more than I should. 90% of my clients are wireless and i have been putting massive resources into resolving any possible wireless issues, but Im seeing these on a few too many desktops now which is starting to raise concerns. I have the FSMO PDC which is a physical box, and I have 2 virtual DC's which are on the same SAN but on 2 different hosts. What would i be looking for on my network which would cause a client to be unable to authenticate with either 3 of the DCs ?

Im getting really confused with all this and Ive got copies of all my files all over the shop. I'm never gonna lose a file (touch wood) but what with local profiles, offline files, and now skydrive, I cant help but feel like Ive always got 3 copies of the same stuff on the local machine. I have the following setup: c:\users\username\documents is redirected to \\staffserv\username\docs\ but also offline files is enabled so anything in that file is cached in the c:\windows\whereveroffflinefilesaresaved I also have the official app from skydrive installed, which makes c:\username\skydrive\documents available to my skydrive So I copied everyting from c:\users\username\documents to c:\username\skydrive\documents and it synced with the skydrive and they are now available online, but they are now also on another PC i installed the skydrive app on. So am I right in thinking that Ive now got 3 copies of the same files (redirected to the server, local copy of offline files, and in the skydrive folder as well) (not to mention then replicated to any other computer I have the skydrive app installed on? This is going to become a concern when I have 25GB of skydrive files and forget when I am connected via a 3G connection with limited data, or overseas etc. Is there an easy way to manage all these levels of sync?

Just to update this in case anyone was following my latest issue. I had to use the Microsoft support to resolve this issue as I was unable to import the liveID's manually. They added them to our system, but they appeared as a MailBox, so i was able to run the Remove-Mailbox cmdlet to purge the liveID from the system. And then when I next ran ILM with the -FirstRun option it provisioned the missing accounts as a mail user as normal. (exept one, which required more intervention from support but Im not sure what he did to fix that one) Cudos to the Micoroft Live@Edu support tho, it has improved 500% since I first started using it and the support folk didnt even know what ILM was. Ive now had 2 support cases resolved in a matter of days from opening the ticket (including time zone differences). Looking forward to Office 365

Hi James can you please elaborate more on this please; what is the current level of recovery in live@edu. The main reason I still maintain Exchange for staff is a) granular recovery of an individual mail and b) the fact I can archive a monthly backup onto tape for archival/legal purposes. Our students thrive with live@edu and skydrive but our school being run as an enterprise like it is i still don't feel live@edu is ready for our staff (perhaps ive answered my own question and the fact we operate as a business fundamentally ensures we require enterprise software)

yup works for local traffic, but there would be no NAT needed for local traffic only traffic destined for the internet ? I Can ping 10.2.0.2 (a remote desktop) from my desktop 10.0.0.x and vice versa. There is routing between the networks, the remote cisco is a local dhcp server for that network. Static route to 10.2.0.0 is configured on the fortigate.

Also, what are the access list deny statements doing?

from a remote pc a tracert just goes to 10.2.0.1 and then * * * * The other end is our main internet connection here and that device is all configured to allow internet from the tunnel interface in and out. When i run a packet diagnostic on the device at the main end, i dont even see any packets coming from the 10.2.0.0 subnet except local traffic. I will try to get a copy of the routing table.

I got the invitation to order mine today so looking forward to getting that. Im definately thinking something for the car, power by USB from the cigarette lighter, wifi can come from the 3G hotspot on my mobile phone, and ive also got a gps usb. Powering a display might be a problem though.

Ive configured one end of this using the Site to Site option of the Routing and Remote access part of NPA but Im not sure how i configure the 'other' end ? Is there a step by step guide anywhere that shows how to connect site A to site B, and i want them both to be the same domain so once i get the p2p up I can start joining clients on site B to the domain at site A ?

fair enough for that I found it more cost effective to just buy a case and chuck in 16gb of RAM and install Datacenter 2008R2 and use that for my labs.

I havent managed to get the 2 sites linked properly yet. I need to spend some time doing that first. I was thinking of maybe putting an IPSEC enabled modem/router at each end to make it simpler rather than try to do it via software. I had openVPN working but I couldnt get it giving access both ways, only from one subnet could see the other but not vice versa.
