The flavor text from the System Shock 2 game manual, which seemed like a bit of a joke about the game menus of the time, now looks kind of prescient.

Only watched the first episode of Mr & Mrs Smith so far, but I agree the presentation and style of the dialogue reminded me of Marriage (BBC drama with Sean Bean and Nicola Walker from 2022), very low energy and ad-libbed feeling. Hopefully it warms up a bit as the characters get to know each other.

Really? We use 65" in most classrooms (with 75" in rooms like science where the kids are more spread out) without any problems.

Iiyama do a 98" screen for about £5K which, based on your sizes for a 75" screen would be about the same sized as your current projector screen. If you went with dual 75" screens, would you have both running from the same source? Because if so, you need to think about how you're going to do data runs. And if you've got your display device to one side of the stage (like we do), then you'd probably need some sort of extender to reach the far screen, which could add in delay. I know if I were a school kid a fractional delay between the two screens updating would distract me from whatever the assembly was about. Also, double the screens, double the things that can go wrong (and if you need data extenders that more things that can go wrong). I'm assuming the screen(s) will be wall mounted.

Maybe they tied up to take the photo. It's like when one of my friends commented that my house was always so tidy. It's not most of the time, I just tidy when I have guests.

No worries. If it's going in a classroom, it might still be worth looking at the commercial large format displays as they'll cope better with any rough and tumble. But they would be coming in about twice the price of similarly specked TV from a recognised brand.

We've been using the Panasonic TH-**CQE2U series displays in a couple of different sizes for digital signage since about 2016, so they're on 8-9 hours every weekday. We banned most of the kettles some years ago because when everyone put them on at the same time at the start of break it would trip the main breaker for the building. We did get to keep the fridge until we moved into the new build (But I don't remember there being anything other than old thermal paste in there). Back on topic. Most IT offices these days have some sort of monitoring screen on the wall. Ours just pings servers/switches and flashes if something goes offline, but I've seen some with loads of extra features on other threads. Also a test-bench/rebuilding station. One of the techs recently found a monitor with all the different display port types so we've nicked that for the test bench, otherwise keeping adapters on hand is useful.

This is our Network Manager and Technician offices. They were originally supposed to be the other way around, but while the (now) manager office is slightly bigger and has more storage, the tech office had more usable desk space, and seemed better suited to 3 people. I'd love to be able to set up either office so everyone didn't have their backs to the door, but all the "desks" are fixed benching so it's not really on the cards even if I could find a layout didn't involve "bunkbed desks". And for a what not to do, this was the "IT Office" in my first school. It's a converted shower cubicle.

Hey, I'm trying to use a SUM formula to add to cells together (one is just a number and the other is the numerical result of a formula). So I'm using =SUM(D2: D3), to add 28 and "=IF('2023-24'!D5<3,'2023-24'!D5,"3")" (which in this case outputs as 3), and it gives me "28" as the output. But if I use =D2+D3 then it works fine and gives me "31". Anyone know why?

It depends. If you're using SDS (or your solution works the same way), then the staff/student licensing is used to determine who can own "class teams". IE you can't set up someone with a student license as teacher in Teams.

Another Barracuda customer here. Searching through the backups for a single file can be a bit awkward, but otherwise it seems to be working great for us.

Can you move the files up onto SharePoint/Google? Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do about SIMS, unless you can replicate the functionality people want remotely with apps like Mint (sorry I can't think of any better examples right now). Or whoever owns SIMS now gets on and actually do the cloud migration thing. (or I guess move to a cloud based MIS) If you can move the files to the cloud, then you could publish SIMS as a remote app and take away the full desktop option. It doesn't help with security, but it starts to change the staff mindset away from "Remoting into the school desktop to work". (I've known enough teachers that would go on Remote Desktop to access cloud resources that it's always a consideration)

For LA maintained schools, aren't any major building works tendered and managed by county? (that was the impression I go from talking to the SBM) Sure we have a program of decorating and minor internal works which keeps the school looking good. But when it comes down to the big things, like replacing the 50YO heating system, or re-roofing one of the buildings, or getting the old 50s/60s era sheet-rock replaced with new cladding/insulation, that all seems to be largely outside of the school's control.

Fine if no-one's using the touch on the screens. Here science are one of the better departments for making use of the board touch functions.

We have exactly the same science lab setup. (checks you don't work here) We wound up using the old cables a pull cords to get newer cables through the underfloor runs. We've not had a problem with HDMI over cat6 ethernet, using Kramer adaptors over using direct cable runs. Just make sure the cables are terminated with a male RJ45 connector rather than into faceplates, otherwise you need HDMI over base-T adapters which are rather flakey and way more expensive. We did investigate having pillars, but the teachers pushed back on the idea as it would block the student's view of the board. Have you thought of flipping it around and putting the computer behind the board, and running some sort of ethernet KVM to the desk.

That "Degraded for..." counter just updates when you refresh the page. Still seems pretty broken for us. Seems worse today that the normal Monday slowness.

I got really into Lonely Mountain Downhill in the back half of last year. Not quite what I was expecting, but great fun and good for bite-sized gameplay sessions. I thought it was going to be a nice, gentle mountain-biking thing - But it's pretty hard core. I keep trying to get back into Cyberpunk, but I can't quite click with the 2.0/2.1 changes.

Securus FMS is another big player (works the same a Smoothwall Monitor) all captures are vetted by a human team and high priorities are emailed to the DSL contacts (with very high priorities getting a phone call). We've been using Smoothwall Monitor since pretty much when it first came out (back when it was still called Visigo). For the most part it's been setup and forget, and seems to work fine.

Same for us, I can get on but half the menu most of the page content won't load. I don't see why Monday morning would be busier than any other day of the week.

Or flip the whole thing vertical for Tetris, easy mode.😁
