We moved Win10 at summer. Myself and my technician both have the black screen issue but as our two stations are still Win7 we’ve not bothered addressing it yet!

Dual monitors with dual inputs, plus Splashtop to/from every PC in the house, church and work. Currently 19" as I can't fit 21" in my desk space without rearranging. Unfortunately my monitors at work are now 24" widescreen which makes remote working with 19" square a pain. Main PC is dual output to the 1st inputs, second PC and MacMini are both single output hooked to the 2nd inputs.

I’ve not hit one yet, but I only reassign each summer when Y13 leave and Y7 join.

The test website has two text fields for typing/scanning the barcode, plus a button to use your camera. We've ordered barcode readers as they're far better at scanning barcodes than a camera is.

We have Net2 wired locks on all our IT Suites plus various other. They're all individually wired, except one which is RS485 because there's two separate doors in the same room. Most single doors are POE units, double-doors are powered units as they don't recommend POE for double mags.

I've been told by our premises manager (who's watched all the webinars on testing setup etc etc etc) that we "need an iPad to scan the barcodes". That in turn tells me the iPads will be on the wifi in order to scan into the app/website/wherever - which with hundreds of students queuing up is going to kill the wifi. I'm going to fight hard to get wired PCs with wired barcode scanners. Peter

Tom et al Our LAN clients point at DCs which have forwarders to Smoothwall Our Wifi clients point at Smoothwall Smoothwall has conditional forwarders (in reverse notation) to the DCs for local lookup, and has OpenDNS for external lookup Am I understanding that the DCs should point direct to (eg) OpenDNS? And should I point our Wifi clients at the DCs to follow the same route, or leave Smoothwall handling them? Our Smoothwall has been DNS and DHCP for wifi, to keep wifi off the LAN all together, but i'm wondering if I should scrap that ideology and have our DCs run DHCP for the wifi as well? TIA

That is so fitting with my work this week - how hard can it be to automate OOBE with an answer file that just works?!

Aha, thanks for both these posts. We have Internal > Smoothwall > ISP as well, and it's the Exa (our ISP) DNS servers we have been using. (82.219.4.24 + .4.25) Using the GRC DNS Benchmark tool on the link above, one of the Exa servers is returning invalid replies and the other is not responding consistently! Now changed to OpenDNS which is consistently high in the benchmark test.

Fair enough, we are so I didn't know that. All our APs are on their own VLAN with Smoothwall, Ruckus and Unifi controllers.

For anyone reading in future, this can be a subnet (eg 192.168.90.0/24) rather than individual AP IP addresses.

I use UniFi Radius with Windows NPS server and Smoothwall doing DHCP with scopes on each VLAN interface. Set the VLAN in each Wireless Network in the UniFi controller.

I presume they mean permission to install applications to c:\Program Files* which if you're locked down I guess they can't? I also log on and run the updates for them (or actually yesterday I provided my details at the UAC prompt whilst she was logged on), as they can't do it themselves.

We’ve got two 7200s arriving this week also. They won’t send SSDs as “they don’t know what the failure modes are” - whatever that means, I’ll monitor our waits/loads before and after - I’ve never paid attention as I’ve no idea what scale or meaning they have, but I can compare before/after.

Am I right in thinking (?) that the Hikvision ports are all just POE IP ports? If so you could just extend out of one of them to a regular POE switch that stays where the current NVR is, and move the NVR elsewhere via a single CAT5.

I'm just testing it but in theory just change "$_.recipients -like" to "$_.sender -like" I wish i'd known this command (about the transport logs) last week when i need to to track something for the cops!

You got a typo in the date filter.

Nobody should be able to ring up a school, parent or otherwise, and ask for the address of a student so that shouldn't be an issue. Re the numbers, put a note on Dad's phone number saying "Do not ring" and quick note saying "Dad on for reporting only; do not contact".

I asked Capita about this in September but didn't get round to implementing it. What you say sounds correct; change it in Nova, send the Cycle over. You will also need to contact eg Classcharts and any other suppliers that consume and display the timetable to change their mapping of times to sessions. Peter

Moved to Exa Networks Fibre 1Gig up/down 18 months ago, from NYCC NyNet. Only had one outage in that time to my recall, in the middle of summer holidays.

Interesting timely thread, don't know if it's related. We had authentication popups at around 9.45 yesterday morning - we rebooted SW (no change), DC1 (no change) and DC2 (problem solved). This morning at 11am then again about 12noon we had the same issue, but only for about 30 seconds - which is why this thread caught my eye. we did have the same auth problem the week before Half Term around 8.15am and had to reboot SW, DC1 and DC2 to go away. We're on Leeds 37 at present. EDIT: Just literally happened again, 1.30pm, as I hit submit on this post!
