Not sure if this is the same thing, but I have an EE Signal Box at home and it has transformed our mobile usage. We used to have good Orange signal here but when they merged into EE they turned off the transmitter that served our house and we had real problems getting a signal. After several phone calls we were given the EE Signal Box FOC - it's brilliant. It does not "boost" the signal, rather it uses your ADSL broadband. Effectively it's a WiFi box and you are making a VoIP call when you use it. As we were already using WiFi in the house for internet services on our phones it hasn't really made a difference in that respect. In fact, now I come to think about it, selling them as a 3G solution is nonsense as you need broadband to use them and if you have broadband you don't need them for their 3G capabilities; unless you have broadband without WiFi!!!!!

Well, we seem to have a resolution at our end - three weeks and no further episodes of the issues with accessing the file server. This is a transcript from MS Support, I hope it helps some of you guys too (this is as received!):- RESOLUTION: 1. We Removed all third party from Server, disabled the same on Host,Bypassed NIC teaming, disabled Offloading features, Updated NIC drivers and Disabled SMB 3. 2. We Also have put the Server service in a Separate Container Sc config lanmanserver type= own 3. Check if this Latest patch is installed Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 update rollup: February 2014 4. After observing the server for couple of days we reverted the changesdone from Step 1 5. After analyzing the Dump The investigation reveals that we arestuck due to oplock. We have seen lot of oPlock requests queued up. The server Sends the break Request for the same but does notreceive any response. Lease Break never happens due to which all the requestafter this point get stuck in redirector and after a point it gives up. Following Registry Key will help in this case If the issue is noticed again Try the below registry key and check if issue re-occurs Run “Reg addHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters /vDisableLeasing /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f” Reboot the SMB Server We have multiple instances of this issuebeing reported. Yes, use the matrix you have to select a user group that has write permissions to the Staff / Employment Details section and clone this group. Then amend the permissions of the cloned group to remove all permisssions to the Staff / Employment Details / Contract section, then assign the user to this new, cloned group.

Looking at User Management it appears you might be able to give access to Staff / Employment Details but restrict access to Staff / Employment Details / Contracts So yes, you should be able to do this.

....oops indeed! @vikpaw you're right, "normal" SIMS users cannot overwrite. However, the Emerge interface is not managed as a user and has overwrite access that I can't turn off. Our Attendance Officer does the amendments after AM registration has closed following calls to parents etc. We do not have a PM registration, using the lesson mark to populate this. It's only been a problem since teachers found the "mark all present" function.

We are having problems with attendance marks being overwritten by Emerge. This is happening when our Attendance Officer has pre-populated a register, for example with a known illness, and the teacher then uses Emerge to take a lesson or session register. Teacher are using the "all present" feature then amending marks back for those not present causing pre-populated marks to be overwritten with "N", This then requires the Attendance Officer to once again amend the mark back to the original. I have spoken with Groupcall support and they tell me the overwrite function cannot be switched off. Has anyone else seen this problem, and how do you deal with the consequences?

It's something more than the H3 tags; at work on IE9 I couldn't see the effect. At home on Firefox 27 all is obvious.

The purpose for which it is being used! This may sound glib, but the function of the box makes it a server, the hardware (and to an extent software) do not. In the dim and distant past I've had production file servers running on former desktop machines for months or years at a time and I've had rack mounted, specially designed "servers" falling over with regularity. It's not what you've got, it's what you do with it

In addition to what @nephilim said:- 1. Your employer should be told, you may have contractual obligations that prevent this, especially if the work type is similar 2. If you are just setting up as a one man band all you need is headed paper (make you own). I'd also recommend a seperate bank account. 3. Keep all documents relating to income and expenditure; if you are using your own car you can claim 45p per mile tax free for business use - this often works out better and easier than divying up petrol, servicing, tax, insurance etc between business use and private use. Keep good records (e.g start milage / finish milage). A seperate mobile (on a cheap contract) can also be useful as again you don't need to split the costs and it can be turned off when you are not working. 4. Keep everything just in case. 5. Self Assessment Income Tax is easier than a lot of people will have you believe. If you're earning less than the VAT threshold (currently £79,000 turnover) it is a straightforward form to fill in, provided you've kept good records. 6. If you are going to use your car make sure it is covered for business use. Good luck, I ran my own business for five years and found it to be both rewarding and a very good learning experience, back on payroll now because I'm getting nearer my pension!

Looks like you have a 4:3 aspect screen (when fully unfurled) and a 16:9 aspect image. You will have to adjust the amount of unfurl to get what you want.

@bergmbe Your description of the user experience is exactly what we are seeing here; hung connections, not all machines at the same time, .tmp files being left behind etc. As I promised an update here it is - there is nothing more to report. We remain functional, but still have some services switched off, and since last week we have not had any repeats of the mass disruption seen prior to the half-term holiday.

I'll see what info I can get on Monday.

Further update:- The "removed software" was, in fact, services that were stopped. Apparently we have made progress as we no longer have the loss of our file server happening several times a day but we are running without various services. We are bringing the services back one at a time to see what effect each has. More when I know what happens.

I'm running a Win7 client and I had as many problems as anyone at our place. We don't have Win8 at all. Sorry :-(

You can only have one lesson per session set up to automatically update N's to L / U; if a student turns up after this lesson they are technically absent all session. You can only set one option or the other per session, not both. Do you fine the earliest marks system works? We had no end of problems with it.

It did for us, on a temporary basis.

The latest from our end (remember I'm not privy to all the technical details):- 1 - we start the first day of a new half term with plans to restart the server service every once in a while 2 - our external support has escalated this to MS and following some memory dumps MS are now paying attention 3 - somebody (perhaps MS) remotes into our server and "removes" some of the software - I would love to know exactly what this means too! 4 - since then there have been no further instances of the problem 5 - the latest suspect is VEEAM So, we are pootling along and as a user I am not experiencing any of the issues we've had for the past few weeks. I don't think this is the end of the matter, and if I can find out what "software was removed" I'll repost.
