Last summer was my first EOY / results days and I was on tenterhooks the whole six weeks. This year I will be ready for rollover by the time everyone leaves and have all my spreadsheets, markbooks and datasets ready by the end of week one. Not sure what I'll do with the rest of the time!

As @creese says, a door is best finished when hung so that any alterations, cutting etc do not damage the finish. As these are internal doors a coat or two of an acrylic based varnish will be all you need. These acrylic products are easy to use, tools wash in water and give a good finish if you take your time. Thanks all, some good ideas here.

As the local Excel Guru (in the land of the blind .....), I've been asked the run a training course for some of our staff. The brief is "Train us in Excel" and I have one, one hour session in which to do this! I've asked what, specifically, they want training to cover and have received responses such as "tell me what it does"; "start at the beginning" and "does this count as CPD?". My problem is knowing where to start, should I take them at their word and start with cell references, moving around and simple arithmetic or should I jump in at the deep end with examples of the spreadsheets we use in school, explain how to use them and ignore what is happening behind the scenes? Any advice welcome. Thanks

Has anyone any experience of Sharepoint training, as a trainer or trainee? I'm looking for anything that will help me with SLG!! I'm happy to consider any form of training, and it need not be certifiable (although that might help in the long run). Can anyone recommend any trainers, courses, books, online tools etc etc etc? I think there are both 1-8 AND 1-9 scales that will be in use by the time we get to 2017! The 1 - 8 scale is being applied to P8 as @jmcq555 said; the 1-9 scale will come in with the revised GCSE's (En & Ma initially) in 2017. How we fit both scales together when, from 2017, we will have both 1-9 and G - A* grades operating is a mystery as yet!

Can you not cut the end off standard phono-to-phono leads? These were / are used to monitor what is being recorded on the tape / MD - it takes the signal going to the recorder and makes it available at the amps output. Not used one since I made mix tapes back in the 80's!

The delay in getting the parental engagement part online has nothing to do with the capabilities of Go and everything to do with the ultra-cautious attitude some people here have. There is a reluctance to allow parents access to "real" data and we lock down Go to prevent access to markbooks, progress charts etc. etc. etc. Fortunately, Go is very flexible in its handling of access and we have been able to get the restrictions we want without too much pain. All staff use Go for all reports; the management of the reports has changed dramatically as a result because I can see, in real time, who has completed and who hasn't. Some staff / departments use Go in place of their own markbooks; most do not but this is again due to lack of leadership desire rather than any limitation of Go. I now use Go as my first port of call whenever I want lists / data / pictures etc, I only resort to SIMS for "deeper" information.

We've tried all three and are currently using Go4Schools. The difficulty in managing the SLG / Sharepoint interface meant that died a death before I got here, although of the three options it is the most powerful and most customisable. Go had just been introduced when I started a couple of years ago and we are (very) slowly opening it up to parents and pupils; we currently use it for reports but we still send out paper ones too. I've just go hold of TASC Insight and I am looking into its capabilities - my project for the summer.

One thing I've always looked for and failed to find is a good camera carrying rucksac. Bags seem to fall into one of two categories; either a good bag for the hills that has the right straps and padding to make it comfortable for all day use or a camera bag with padding, compartmentalisation and lots of pockets for storing bits but useless straps that cut into you after half an hour walking. Currently I use a smallish camera bag inside my "proper" rucksac but this has the disadvantage of being laden down with all the straps, buckles and other paraphenalia needed to make it a stand alone bag in its own right. My ideal would be a padded, configurable container designed to fit into a standard rucksac without adding too much weight and bulk.

If you're in Lancashire it has to be Wilkinsons - proper service from a proper shop (with all the benefits that brings).

Principle 7 of the Data Protection Act (my emphisis) "Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, personal data." I doubt any court in the land will accept "it's down to the teacher" as a defence.

For us it is not controlling the apps that is the issue, it is controlling the data those apps store. Some apps will hold sensitive information with nothing more than the owners PIN code preventing access (and that's for the ones that use a PIN code!) Of course, this applies to all devices, not just iPads.
