Sounds right, you need either a spanner of the correct size or an adjustable wrench - this way you put even pressure on both sides of the nylon nut that holds the fitting to the cistern. If you use pliers you risk deforming the nut because you have to squeeze it to get the pliers to grip.

Pliers are not tightening tools. If you did get the one shown in your op you will not need to tighten it too much. If it's leaking between the cistern and the fitting try adding a bit of Plumbers Mate under the fitting's flange; if it's leaking between the fitting and the water supply change the washer / seal on the supply fixing. Over tightening these plastic fittings is easily done and will result in leaks, guaranteed.

If yours looks like the one in the picture then replace the whole lot as getting to the innards inevitably breaks a bit of plastic somewhere. If it's of the older ball float type then replacing the diaphragm or washer is relatively painless.

We use SIMS too; take a report out every few weeks and into Excel; calculate "balances" and print "cheques" that the pupils can use to "buy" rewards in the library - takes about half an hour per month to do all five year groups.

FWIW we use Emerge and have not had any reported problems. SIMS, on the other hand, appears to have slowed to a crawl!

We're having problems with Go4Schools and all attempts to contact the suppliers is failing - support tickets are getting no response, e-mails are going unanswered and the phone lines for the Support team and the parent company are unobtainable. We've recently gone through an exercise of deleting students who left several years ago and have managed to get rid of a lot of extraneous records. However, we cannot remove the student record for former student who is now a teacher at the school. Has anyone any idea how we can do this / should we be doing this? EDIT: SIMS (I'm sure I selected the prefix when I wrote the post!)

That looks like fun, why do you say it is stupid and idiotic? The few cubic metres of methane they are burning cannot be captured for any other use; burning the methane actually reduces its greenhouse effect and a good cow will replace that methane in a few hours!

We use Go4Schools for our internal assessment and reporting but I would not use it for definative PI analysis. Too many qualifications need to be accounted for that do not appear in our markbooks, English Lit for example. We did try last year using it and I spent a lot of time over the summer creating feed rules to generate "ghost" classes so I could assign the correct qualification to them. SIMS is similar as we do not necessarily list all qualifications in Course Manager / Exams Organiser (for example, qualifications taken as part of a day release scheme). In the end I used SISRA, but even then it took several itterations to get it right. Last year was my first year, this year I'm hoping things go a little smoother!

They show in things like "Individual Register Report" where the report is looking at LESSONS not just SESSIONS I also use bespoke reports to analyse them too.

We've added a couple of codes, K for no PE kit, for example. When you create them you have to assign them as an alias to one of the "legal" codes. We use them in Lesson Monitor and when P4 is used to populate the PM session code SIMS translates from our code to the "legal" one. I've not had a problem using the reporting system to analyse them, although you will only see them in lesson marks NOT in session marks. However, as @matt40k says, these seem more appropriate to behaviour marks rather than attendance.

What diameter is it? And what material? Copper pipes of 15, 22 or even 28mm diameter would suggest water under pressure. Plastic pipes of 40 to 48 mm diameter are for waste water with no pressure. You don't often find these pipes hidden in walls except for short runs to shower mixers and wall mounted taps; and then it's mainly the smaller copper pipes. If the diameter of the pipe is small enough you can try attaching a hose and blowing into it. If there is back pressure it would suggest it is connected to something somewhere, if you can blow freely it would suggest the pipe is open at the other end too and can problably be removed. Possibly!
