Yeah, I've finally managed to complete the Couch to 5K plan. It's taken much longer than nine weeks and it has been a bit stop-start but I did it. Well, kind of did it, my pedestrian pace means I've not yet run 5K but I have done three 30 minute runs and I'm getting faster each time. I've not developed a "desire" for running that friends said I would, nor have I developed a hatred for it. Now that the weather is good enough for three or four cycle rides to work each week I'll probably just run once a week to keep my hand in so I can pick it up again come the winter. +1 for "proper" shoes from an established UK maker. I've got a couple of pairs of Loake's and they are approaching a decade old and feel like they are just breaking in! Yes, they did cost a fair bit but when you spread it out over the many years I've had them it's good value for money, and resoling at the manufacturers is about 1/3rd the price of a new pair.

My thoughts were to start the school year on 29/08/16 - after the exam results were in to prevent any issues with that. All new enrollments start on that date but with the school calendar set for three days holiday followed by two PD days - children attend from 5/9/16 onwards and I get a week to do the changes in Go4Schools.

I'm not sure how this would affect attendance, can you please elaborate? Every school does have the same problem, and I have asked them to look at this issue but until it is addressed I'd like to explore ways to use my time more effectively.

I share an office with the Exams team who spend a great deal of time at this time of year planning the forthcoming exam season. Part of this work is assigning invigilators to the exams which involves lots of e-mails, text messages, phone calls and stress. Our Exam Officer mentioned that she knows the National Trust have an online system whereby their volunteer staff can assign themselves to attend when there is a need and I was wondering if there is anyone out there doing a similar thing for their invigilators. I am thinking of a system where the Exam Officer can set up a series of "sessions" and then the invigilators can pick the ones they want to attend; the system would have certain rules to make sure the correct number of invigilators are assigned to each session and there is the correct mix of male and female invigilators. Does anyone know of such a system?

For as long as anyone can remember, we have always started our academic year on 1st September. However, we use Go4Schools and this will not update until SIMS has rolled over to the new year and we always end up with a mad panic and a lot of work throughout September getting Go4Schools ready for the new year. My thinking is that I could start the new year at some point in the holidays thus gaining some time when things are quieter to do the setting up of Go4Schools. The "other place"* is full of tales of woe and caution about doing such a thing, citing reasons ranging from the census to exam results all being affected. My gut feeling is that nobody has really looked at this because "we've always done it this way". Does anyone here know, with certainty, what the effects of starting the year early will be? Good question! I'm not at all certain what we will get but it would be nice to continue to get the raw scores and the conversion data, I'm not sure that just the Scaled Score data will be much use.

Good for you. I've been doing one session every three days, rather than trying to fit all three into one week. Also, I've sometimes done more than the three sessions before moving to the next week, just so I felt comfortable with where I was before moving on a step.

We do not follow this path because Further Additional Science does not count towards EBacc nor the EBacc bucket. This according to the latest "English Baccalaureate List of Qualifications 2015" to be found in the RAISEOnline library.

I've heard there will be a requirement to provide the Country of Birth and Nationality for all pupils. Note, this is Nationality not Ethnicity, so a whole new field. [EDIT] Also, we will need to provide "proficiency in english" - whatever that means!!

We had problems last year when County told us they would move certain pupils out but didn't and we ended up with them on the census and counting towards our results. When the table checking exercise came around we tried to remove them but we were denied the opportunity to do so. This year we've been extra careful and ignored county. I don't know what the case will be if you move the pupil back a year at this stage; we had a pupil out of year not so long ago and at the time of checking the data we were able to state that they were out of year and not to be counted this year, though she did count the next year. However, she was already in Y10 at census.

This is an old, and perfectly legal, gotcha. We fell foul of just such a thing a few years back, only in this case the supplier was our own LA! I'm afraid it's pay-up and learn time. Oh, and take a good look at all your other contracts too.
