If its part of a school with a windows client network, maybe also consider other MDM software. We are moving in the iPad direction, as some of the apps out there for teaching and learning are very very good. We're considering Filewave as a possible part to our solution, as you can manage different devices on different OS's too.

I can confirm this does, and indeed, with me, did happen. I used to be a teacher, and during my teacher training, (I won't mention where,) I was asked to attend vocal coaching sessions with an opera singer, in order to remove my broad, Yorkshire Accent, as it was felt that this was preventing my instructions being understood by some members of the classes I taught. Needless to say, I now have a nondescript semi midland accent, of which I am neither fond, nor proud of, unlike my original one.

Hi Can you not simply redefine the academic dates, with the extra week off, and then set the day number of your return? Or is this a case of making sure the data is spot on for the return?

Hi Hopefully, within the next few weeks we're rolling out a classroom side MIS in our school. I've been charged with looking at best practice and the policies and expectations placed upon the teaching staff about its use and security. I've done the usual. Ask at local schools, contact friends in the jobs etc, but i'm finding very little. Some of the ideas cross over with the assessment and reporting policy, and attendance (recording) policy. Does anyone out there have a good set of policies, or can contribute ideas so i can formulate my own. I want to be able to write simple but effective policies which would oblige staff to record attendance within the MIS within 10 mins of the start of the lessons etc. The sort of thing that English State schools have in place as a matter of basic expectations of a class teacher. Any help most welcomed

We have a dedicated Cat5 network for the school owned xboxes, which allows local play and online play. we had to make it separate for these issues, but some games refuse point blank to cooperate, even over local going through a basic cisco small business switch. We don't allow personal desktop games console in our boarding houses, just handhelds. that way we don't have to support them when the inevitable call comes, "my halo isn't working- fix it"

Hi as an iUser (like that by the way) the normal sync of an iPad through iTunes for example, allows transference of only the file types supported by both the iPad and the iTunes software, namely music, movies, images, iBooks (Win users) etc. You can also drag into iTunes any file which can be opened in an iOS app, such as pages etc. Some iPad apps allow disk usage, which would then possibly mount like any removable disk, depending on config of the app, and the pc its attached to. On a Mac, any iOS device does not mount like an external disk would be default and its down to command line stuff i believe, to try to get it seen by mac osx as a disk in that way. Can't speak for windows though since you use windows i assume, you can test this.

If you have it installed, Try quitting any Smart Ink application and processes for the user. If this fixes the problem, then there's loads of forum chat on here about it. I'm currently searching a final solution to this.

I can't speak for current practice, but I was the manager in a school in the midlands during RMs reign with the PFI bids in the area. (Not sure if it still is) We had to provide basic first level support in house, (Simple software updates, replace cables, swap out faulty optical drives, etc,), work with mobile techs for things like re-imaging, and network configurations of the APs etc., and then send off all hardware for serious fault rectification. Experiences varied though, and in the first round of installations we got mostly good service. On the refresh 3-4 years later, it took a couple of schools to band together to get proper 2nd level support.

Make sure you are downloading on a mac old enough to have been shipped with Lion on it. I tried to DL a backup copy on my Mini, which came with ML and failed, giving me the error that the computer is too new to use this OS.

It can be, but the wages do generally match it. The whole principle is that only one family adult has to work, so wages are higher to reflect that. Average Swiss wage is around 6000-7000 CHF per month, with many on a lot more (approx 4000 to 4500 GBP) before tax. Its not uncommon to have an annual salary in excess of 150,000 CHF. Tax varies by canton (County) but is often less than 20% overall. and you need to pay for healthcare, but inflation is almost 1% max, and has been for years. I live in an expensive area (Ski resort) but you can rent a 3 or 4 bed apartment for not much more than 1000 CHF per month which is around 700 GBP. Food costs more, but fuel is cheaper. The lifestyle more than makes up for it.

Hi I can only second Rabbie. As an ex Pat in Europe (almost) I can safely say that life is better out of the UK. I am on a low wage out here, but I have wonderful views, excellent amenities, clean streets, and a government that actually has to listen to the populous and act if that population speak. I have saved money, and had such a great social life without the fear of another governmental screwup, or oppressive regime of inspection, health and safety, etc. I really cannot recommend staying in the uk, at least for another 10 years.

Eh. don't you mean mid 2009. Thats 4 years old. It's to do with graphics capability i think. My mid 2012 MBP 13" runs a dream with it. Will try it on the wives mid 2009, which says it should work according to the site.

Dacia use lsat gen Renault engines, or detuned current ones. I've had a wide variety of them over the past few years, before leaving the UK, and the engines were very solid, very reliable and for their size, often quite powerful. If you get a 1.5 DCI from Dacia, then as long as it isn't running 120hp, then its running well below full pelt, and should last forever. I happened upon the current owner of a 04 plated Megane i owned only 18 months ago, and she'd managed nearly 100,000 miles without any problems at all. I gave the car the first 36,000 in the 2 1/2 years I had it. Modern petrol engines are getting just as complicated. With any new car, get an agreement for fixed servicing, or buy the package like you can for VW. Make sure you get a full, long term warranty, 5 years minimum now is the norm, and some do 7 or longer. I would never buy outright for a new car. with apr at 0% for some deals, its worth thinking carefully. I used to end up spending between 3 and 6 grand on a three year old car, and then anything up to 250 plus almost every other month for repairs or new exhausts or what ever. Putting down a grand and then paying between 200 and 300 a month for the car over 3 years, with no ongoing costs almost saved me money, and certainly allowed me to never have to worry about finding money for repairs, etc. Its not for everyone though, and when money is tight, the agreements can be hard to get out of.

Contact Apple Education directly, and explain that you lost the original media, but have an active licence. Quite often, for a small fee, they will post you a disc. We requested one a few years back when one of our Pro discs got chomped by some muppet who slid it into a crack in the wall.

As an Ex-teacher, I agree. We had it installed in the previous schools i worked in as a teacher, and i used to run it, mainly to distribute and collect files from the students, and shutdown the machines at the end of the day. Now it seems that our new staff have gotten used to the ability to monitor screens without getting out of their seats. ("We had this in my old school, can we have it here?") Wouldn't mind but we have a max class size of 16, and an average of about 6 or 7. It's not like you've got to have eyes everywhere is it?

New member of staff is demanding something akin to AB Tutor or RM Tutor (same core????), which i have used in the past, but, as per the title, we're a BYOD school running a windows teacher environment, and a 95% macbook student environment. (Don't ask why, I gave up trying to figure that one out within 3 weeks of getting here) Question is, does such a thing exist. Some like Netop, and Net Support School, do have iOS, OSX clients etc, but this only works if you can admin the student machines and make sure they are running the client. In a BYOD school, we have no ability to admin the students personal devices. Is there something out there that my google foo has so far failed to find. Cheers

So glad to have found this. Been driving me mad for 3 weeks. Annoyingly, the machine I get this on had a new IWB fitted so the engineer installed the new release of smart. It's a right sod to remove and replace with an older version.

Sounds like its been switched off mid firmware update. Try plugging in a USB hdd, and then using the restore keystroke until you get to see the USB drive and try to restore from apple servers to the USB drive. This should then allow you to see the 'Macintosh HD' and check the files its missing are present. From there it could be a case of importing the files manually, if you can find another copy, or sadly doing a rebuild again. I'm not sure what that file does tbh.

I'd be interested in if you've explored filewave any further. We're in the very early stages of planning and proposing a 1 to 1 iPad scheme to around 300-350 and are looking at the alternative packages and methods of deploying apps etc. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I buy Canon Powershot SX series since they are robust and deliver a quality result. A bit more expensive than some, but the metal case, and battery that you can recharge out of the camera means that you can have spares charged up ready.

This sounds like the USB lead is too long. If its over 5m and plugged into a pc without active extensions, then the board struggles to connect. We have this so picked up a couple of powered hubs and bingo, all fine. The change in drivers from win xp to win 7 (assuming you skipped vista like most of us) might mean a change in the way the detection works. I know a lot of older boards with USB to serial converters also suffer under win 7 and 8. Try using a vanilla laptop and install the smartboard package directly, then plug the board in with around 3m USB if you can, and see if the same issue arises.

I can't believe they are asking you to do this. During break and lunch is the one time you can get into classrooms and fix that broken monitor, or replace the VGA cable that the teacher broke shoving it into the serial port of her old laptop, etc etc. Most NTs take a break either before or after the school break time to allow for this down time to be used properly. Plus the students will not show due respect to non teachers, and you have been given little guidance and training for handling any situation that arises. I would refuse.

Hi all i work in a BYOD school with an externally managed CISCO wifi network. As far as i can work out, we have the latest firmware in our access points and controllers etc, so the original Win 8 and Cisco issue should not be the cause here. I have 5 win 8 machines that are failing to connect to the network. Authentication is username and password, AES, PEAP, no validation of server cert, and we don't use machine login info. Two specific cases are a HP envy touchscreen with Ralink RT3290 and also a samsung EX500 with Broadcom SDIO 43241. Drivers have been rolled back, updated, god knows what. Tried win 7 driver install but that failed to install. Still not able to connect. Done th eusual google the hell out of drivers, and forums etc, but feel like i'm in an endless loop of windows 8 hell. Any ideas, because i'm all out. Annoyingly, almost all other users are Mac based and everything just whistles through, and those with win 7 work ok, so never had a concern before win 8.
