We're about to do the same here, at easter, as well as the 250 students in September. Our list of potential apps runs to over 100. Most of them free, but some not. Its worth investigating if your VLE has an app. The new firefly 5 teacher and student apps look interesting. We've identified around 25 key apps, including near pod, the iWork suite, and iLife suite which we will be encouraging both staff and students to use. From our extensive research, and site visits to schools both here, and in the UK, has led us to tackle the project from the classroom experience and teaching and learning pedagogy first, and then find the tech to make it work. We have a good ICT coordinator, which is a must for the success of a 1:1 staff or student project of this type.

I'm based in Switzerland, and the group of schools I belong to did some digging. If you register a .uk or other EU address, then your primary data store will be in the EU zone, however, the reflected backup, we've learned, may fall outside the EU DPA compliant countries. For Swiss education users, it is normal to follow the same rules as the .uk users. But the AUS rules don't meet the EU DPA either, we've learned. In the end it is the managing groups decision, not mine. Part of the reason comes down to the kind of students, or more rightly, parents we have. The information about them must remain as tightly controlled as possible. Non EU DPA countries are not trusted by the group, so we have to look for other solutions. We've got about 24 months we think. Hope 365 gets better soon. Still not impressed with the realtime collaboration and versioning in MS products, and will so miss the forms and other little extras that Google has developed, or added from 3rd parties.

I haven't been through this process, but am preparing in the next 24 months to do the exact opposite, as the group withdraws from the cloud due to data insecurity and storage outside DPA compliant countries. Would be asking the questions as to how come they're so sure this is safe within EU DPA?

Yep. Main battery not holding charge can do this. Usually replacing the Main Board battery should be a fix. Maybe test the battery or replace with another.

They want as little as possible stored in the cloud. Its a security thing, based on our student population. It's a worry about any data being in the cloud at all. Personally I can't see the problem, as long as its in a Swiss equal country. Basically the EU. The powers that be tend to disagree.

We don't have access to it at the moment. I admit it has been a little while since I last used it (at another school), but its still cloud based, and the group are so anti cloud its almost silly. They're only entertaining 365 as a last ditch alternative to local hosting.

Thats possible but Switzerland isn't in the EU, for contracts like this, so we're just trying to figure out this ourselves. Microsoft aren't being very helpful. The group is really pushing for local hosting if at all possible too.

From what we understand, if we signed up to this here in Switzerland, the Cloud part is in US, not EU. Plus it has nowhere near the functionality of Google apps as we use it here, although we have a funny feeling the group might make us use some form of 365. I have to say, i'm not a fan of it.

Some of those things are very easily found in iMovie, just by using the CMD click for the traditional right click in windows. I'm assuming this person used to convert his analogue video to digital, and used an editor on a computer before. If not, then some basic training is going to be required. If he's demanding full Pro level editing tools, then Final Cut is the best, and possibly cheapest Mac based option to run on a macbook.

Not sure if this is the right section, but Mods, please move if you need to. We currently use Google Apps for Education, and have been from a few years, but with the sale of the school to an Education Group in September, we've been told that the policy of the group is not to use Cloud based services unless the data is held either in Switzerland, or the EU, at a push. The staff and students have been using the google share and collaborate features quite heavily over the past few years, with lots of positive impact on the learning, and as it currently stands, the school runs a BOYD policy for students, so a web based platform solves the issues of OS dependancy. The school provides a MS network but the students usually (95%) are mac users. Does anyone know of a locally hostable set of apps, with the same collaboration and share potential that Google apps base given us. Failing that, are there any EU based solutions that anyone know of? I know the whole world is going cloud based, and schools are no exception, but we've tried to argue our case, but the answer is a firm, NO! Thanks in advance.

If your CS6 is causing trouble on OSX, what makes you think that its going to run any better on the same (designed for OSX) hardware, running windows. In my experience the reverse is often true. I've dual booted a number of Macs and find that whilst windows will run fine, and most applications will behave well, the more power hungry, graphics, photo and AV tend to be a little less reliable that the same on OSX.

I agree. It won't find any machine information over any kind of WPA Enterprise network with Proxies. Unless you can rig a different network somehow, maybe a WEP one, just for the time it takes to restore (About an hour). If you have access to a mac, then following the suggestion of Arthur, is the best way of doing this.

AB Tutor was the last one we used (2012) and that version was fine. Had some nice features for the more tech savvy teachers too.

That may explain why we don't seem to suffer. We use Dells USF with SSDs. Almost all are i5 @2.9Ghz, or better.

Having run HP ink jets in the past, and now running a Canon, the results are probably on a par with each other. The real problem for me is the ink costs of the Canon. It seems to drink it. The HP models using the big ink tanks and a good local refill place saved me loads whilst i was in the UK. As for a laser jet for photos. I'm not sure its going to cut the mustard for some.

I can't quite believe that! Are you talking complete boot times, or the time just to load SmartNotebook 11? We use Win 7 Enterprise, on i7s, with 4GB and an SSD, and Smart notebook 11 will load an empty notebook in about 10-12 seconds. If its a preprepared one, with lots of content, then it does take a little longer, but normally not much longer than 25 seconds. We have some win8 machines, and these seem a bit quicker if i'm honest.

Some of these made me giggle. I know thats wrong, but really! Gmail doesn't work on an iPad! ROFL. Seriously though, some of these jobs almost anyone with a little tech know how can do. I'd do the jobs you can, and then inform SMT that since they couldn't do it, you took matters into your own hands, and completed the jobs. They may start questioning the bills they're paying then.

I would say you have a faulty alternator or battery. Diseasel cars don't use half as much juice as petrol cars, and I've got a petrol Subaru Impreza that has only done 9K since i purchased it last november and its kept out side, with temperatures down as low as -25 last winter (check my location) and it was often under 2 foot of snow, yet started like a dream. Most journeys were no more than 15-25km, and maybe only once a fortnight during the winter months. The battery wasn't even new when i bought the car (its a 2007 model).

Its an Employment Agency, and as such they cannot apply for CRB on the behalf of the employer. Its standard practice, however, for the agency to pay the cost of the CRB back after 1 or 2 months successful placement. Same rules as supply teaching. I'd get used to it, as lots of schools are hiring this way now.
