  1. Select is a subscription license and it's subject to minimum quantities. Microsoft licensing is very complex and even they don't really understand it, do your research thoroughly before you commit to anything. Edit: in fact, glancing at the comparison table, a select license is a three-year commitment to a minimum quantity of 250 machines. This is a baaaad choice.
  2. I considered adding that, but the danger is always that it sounds like the user can ask support to get their files off for them before starting maintenance, which is just lazy. So I would add to GD's clause something like "Data recovery will only be attempted if a file is inaccessible to you as an ordinary user; it is not an alternative to ensuring your files are safe before requesting maintenance."
  3. Off the top of my head: The school/college/institution* provides safe storage space on a network location for your personal and shared files. This is the only location which is backed up and protected against disaster. Environmental events, user error or actions to repair your laptop may permanently damage or destroy files on the hard drive, which cannot be recovered. You are responsible for ensuring that files are stored in the approved location and you take sole responsibility for any other files you may require. In requesting that maintenance be performed on your laptop, you assert that the data stored on it may be safely destroyed without loss. *delete as appropriate
  4. IIRC, you need to register them in the uninstall table too, or they'll get left behind (I don't have a copy of orca in front of me to help further, sorry).
  5. @brpilot: A docx is really a zip file (yes, you can decompress it yourself) so it wasn't just the last in the list, your webserver was actually being intelligent
  6. In my (brief) testing I couldn't use /l and /t together (or possible /l and /c, I don't remember).
  7. I don't see any mention of SMTP (or, as this is the Mail, 'e-mail') in that article.
  8. SPF, DomainKeys and so on are already in place to do this, but it's such a huuuuge change to co-ordinate it's still in the planning stages. Some ISPs are adopting it gradually, but even of those most are cautious about rejecting mail (as oppose to tagging it) because of how little mail can be classified in the first place. Chicken and egg problem, really.
  9. I already answered in your other thread.
  10. No, 'many' ISPs have an alternative port. Not all.
  11. Keep reading, and you'll see this: That's the problem.
  12. In a startup script or startup shortcut: shutdown.exe /r /t 900 /c "You are eligible for a 15-minute fixed session." You have to restart though, which is a slight inconvenience.
  13. Only if you're outside their network. If you're inside, they already know where you live
  14. Unless you're doing something funky like SPF, I'd always try and use the local ISP's SMTP server - it's closer to you in networking terms as well as geographical. No, they didn't.
  15. WSUS is fine if you're deploying things that are in it, but some significant hotfixes are only distributed if you ask for them, or are published but for a specific problem and so not available in WSUS. For these out-of-band patches, you need some kind of mechanism to install it only once.
  16. Ah, that's more like it - there is a group policy for running startup and logon scripts synchronously, which forces them to have been executed before a user can log on. By default, they are run in the background while the user does their thing, which saves time but can cause confusion when magical things just happen...
  17. What, the knowledgebase fix itself? Nope, sorry.
  18. It should be in computer startup; as it applies the policy during startup you see 'Running startup scripts..' and the hotfix window thing will appear on top, do its thing and go away again. Don't know why you got icons behind your login dialog, an effect of that hotfix maybe?
  19. Heh, do you blame them?
  20. That's it? keep it!
  21. In contrast, my parents had a Modeo estate for years and years without any hitches. Just to make things easier for you I had an H-reg Citroen AX that I bought for a song for ages, and now a 51 Nissan Micra. Both embarassing, but also both reliable and cheap to run. (And I was quite attached to the AX in the end..)
  22. Was it just me that read this as 'Resource for cracking Microsoft' and got really excited?
  23. Nono, if you do both at the same time a bolt of lightning will strike you when three hags meet on the heath. And yes, I did:
  24. Let me google that for you
