Ultimate Boss just came across this, which blew me away: ScreenToaster - Online screen recorder. Capture screencasts instantly. Uses a java applet in the browser to capture video of an area of the screen or the whole desktop, compresses it and immediately renders it in a flash video. Can capture webcam and audio at the same time, has basic editing and can upload to Youtube or Screentoaster, or download as a Quicktime movie or FLV file. Even works across Windows, Mac & *nix Give it a play.

The Citrix and RDP protocols are acceptably quick, VNC is pretty good, and X is just sluggish.

I assumed you were talking about support family in other places or something, sorry. If you're on the same network, give them a link to the request remote assistance thingy in Windows Help and they either use Messenger, if you have it, or an email, to open a session with you.

Installing Moodle on Ubuntu.....
powdarrmonkey replied to TheFopp's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Check you have carried out any configuration steps listed in /usr/share/doc/moodle/README.Debian. The Apache logs are /var/log/apache2/access.log and /var/log/apache2/error.log by default, check them. I suspect you don't have a handler registered for .php files, can you access one by name at http://localhost/moodle/...? -
It's installed by default if you install the gnome meta-package (banshee is a direct dependency), but there is no 'default' music player. That's choice at work Rhythmbox claims to do iPods, but I've found it's fairly ropey at it (though of course that could just be my configuration).

Agreed; it has the advantage of six-monthly bleeding edge releases (Karmic is due on Oct 31st) and two-yearly long-term releases for stability.

Ubuntu is a good beginner's choice. The only way I succeeded against "but what now" was to take my Windows hard drive out physically and put it in the loft. If you're after software, post what you need and you'll get a hundred suggestions, I guarantee it As for iPod software (and being the shell-junkie that I am) my favourite is gnupod.

Installing Moodle on Ubuntu.....

Correct; it's not the package system's job to guess where the administrator wants them to appear. Bad! Other parts of moodle assume it can be found where it was installed. Instead of copying the files, remove the directory you created and link to moodle instead: sudo rm -r /var/www/moodle sudo ln -s /usr/share/moodle /var/www/moodle Substitute /usr/share/moodle for the right path if my memory has failed me. -
Your backup software really shouldn't require 12GB of main memory to run a backup Either you have backup software, or they are clutching at straws.

Quote Request: 300 Office 2007 Pro licences
powdarrmonkey replied to garethEds's topic in Our Advertisers
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but Office 2007 is part of the schools agreement pack, along with Windows. -

Emailing attachments to a shared drive
powdarrmonkey replied to WithoutMotive's topic in How do you do....it?
You'll need a service that polls the mailbox from time to time, extracts attachments and saves them appropriately. I don't know of anything off the shelf, so you'll probably be rolling your own. So you need to consider how often you'll poll, how you decide if an attachment is safe (the usual paranoia about untrusted input should apply), what you'll do with corrupt attachments, and what to do when file names clash, amongst other things. powdarrmonkey, who today is a gang all in himself. -
WTF Anyway, back on the topic... you'll have to either have two mandatory profiles, one in each language, or do some registry hackery at logon. Hide it from the end user if you're that bothered about it.

The BBC news website had a little bit of coverage, but their pictures weren't nearly as impressive as yours. Were you stuck inside or was it ok to go out in?

What happens if your outside line breaks for a week? Better to serve them up from inside. -
JFMG are the people to ask. But if you're dithering, buy a license - then the church hall down the road won't suddenly broadcast their bingo numbers into your assembly. Be aware that in 2012 the channel 69 frequencies are being re-allocated, too, so your kit will probably become useless.

Stopping local laptop users installing software
powdarrmonkey replied to Little-Miss's topic in Learning Network Manager
Cover your back by making it clear that it's their responsibility and that if it breaks, it'll go back to how it was issued, no questions asked. Take a clean image and restore that when things go wrong. It's just simpler -
