Smoothwall Guardian - transfer configuration?
powdarrmonkey replied to a topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
There's a backup and restore function in Smoothwall, it works pretty well. I've found you might have to fiddle with the IP settings afterwards, but it does the PITA things well enough. -
You haven't allowed for the traditional British HoD approach to new ideas: 1. Wowed by salespeople and/or shiny adverts and/or Apple Corporation; 2. Insist on kitting out a suite of said technology, ignoring all advice to the contrary or protests that nobody has the skills to support it; 3. Find there isn't enough money left in any budget to pay for it, let alone training on it (if there is some money, refuse to spend it anyway); 4. When technical staff still aren't able to support it, whinge that IT are useless and/or say "how hard can it be, you're good at this stuff".

Best connection for web access to intranet server
powdarrmonkey replied to pod's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
One or more bonded SDSL connections is probably the most suitable against cost, or upwards: some bonded T1s, or a private circuit to your ISP (Business Internet Leased Lines - High Speed Internet Leased Lines in London, UK - Services Nationwide | Goscomb Technologies Limited). Interestingly we serve up Exchange, OWA, VLE and Intranet access through our ADSL with a 1.3Mib/s upload I think, but we're much smaller than you. -
Awesome, all our work was worth it if 10.04 gets the mattx seal of approval

Please consider reducing your energy consumption by increasing the minimum temperature to 22 or 23 degrees. The conditioners will still hold the temperature, but they'll work much less hard and it'll still be comfortable to go in there to work for short periods.

What's your point?

If you were to make the move from Windows to Linux/open source.....
powdarrmonkey replied to Disease's topic in *nix
Both, all in one go over a summer. It's not worth the hassle trying to get stuff to co-operate if it's going to be replaced anyway. LDAP, Kerberos, dhcpd3 and bind. LDAP and Kerberos are used by AD in any case. Smoothwall Bacula Probably Zimbra, I should think Papercut. Terminal sevices for stuff that can't be ported or replaced, like SIMS. -
I like how you used a "highly flammable" box as a temporary hive... Your job is sooo much cooler than mine

Not only is Pacman 30 years old, but Google have a playable masthead of it: Google The Museum of Computing have a pacman day tomorrow, is anyone joining me?

Not true. Data can be reconstructed with one drive missing, that's the whole point of it.

NOOOOO. Under absolutely no circumstances ever should you do this. It is a massive, gaping security problem. Instead, you should (for the default packages of Apache2) chgrp www-data /home/folder. Or even better, place a symlink to /home/folder in /var/www.

Do you use sa-update? Try running it again to fetch anything that's been pushed today. -
It is engine management. Flashing - the system is restricting your control of the car; solid - there is a fault or other exception. The official line is that you may drive it at low demand to the nearest garage. (incidentally, the exclamation mark in a circle is because you have applied the handbrake...)

Still haven't cracked software deployment
powdarrmonkey replied to Little-Miss's topic in Learning Network Manager
No, just /force, and you'll be prompted to log out or reboot. -

Create a simple network diagram...primary school
powdarrmonkey replied to RTi's topic in How do you do....it?
Yes, my tongue was firmly in my cheek Now seriously: I found the Visio network images quite helpful when doing the same sort of exercise. I also produced one purely logical, albeit simple, map and one partially overlaid on a map of the school, just with the buildings rearranged slightly to make it easier. -

I'm sorry, but if you're going to be opaque you can count me out. edit - wait, if this is already finished, why are you seeking contributions?
