Hi Bogger As you have stated you work for a company called Editure. So, no offense, but it is going to be in your best interest to promote this product, good or bad. And the very fact that you said, and I quote - "Firstly, I am massively biased, as I work for Editure helping schools use DB Primary." Suggests to me that it is not as user friendly as you make out, simply because if it was user friendly then why would schools need Editure to help them use it?? Also this is not a hate thread, all I wanted was feedback from any schools that have used this product. As I stated the techs that I have spoken to thus far "hate" it, this is not me hating it but this is what feedback I am getting from other schools. I have an open mind in regards to this product, but thus far all I am getting is negative feedback. So from that I can only conclude that DB Primary is not really as good as the sales people say it is. Lets face it, your job is to sell this product good or bad, so of course you are going to be biased, I started this thread to get feedback from "real" everyday users, the techs at the frontlines so to speak, and not some sales rep from a company like Editure, no offense, but it really annoys me when threads are hijacked by companys trying to promote themselves.

hi all A few of the schools I support have been sold a VLE called db primary. The techs that have used it hate it with a passion but the LEA are pushing it and schools seem to be buying it. Has anyone here used it/seen it, what are your thoughts, cheers

Hi all I have just replaced a win2000 sever with a win 2008 box. Everything has been transfered/replicated. The new box is working fine. Now I wanted to rename the new box with the same name as the old win2000 dc. The reason for this was that a lot of the gpo's and apps referred to the old box i.e unc paths \\oldserver\apps\ etc. Now I have renamed the win 2008 box but acitive directory has cocked up. The dns has updated with the new server name. But is there any way of renaming a dc without messing up active directory? Thanks all

Thats what I did, and he went with RAID 0. The server does not hold any critical data, each teacher is resposible to keeping all critical data backed up via memory sticks etc, the school also backs up daily onto several network drives. And if the server did go down the head is happy that it may be down for a few days in order to order parts and reimage the server, so in other words he is not fussed about redundancy. Hey ho.

Hi Quick question a primary school has a server with 4 300gb sas drives. Now I know it is normal to go with RAID 5 but the school wants performace over anything. So I am tempted to go with RAID 0 as both read and write speeds would be good, unlike RAID 5 where writes can be slow. I know if a drive in RAID 0 fails your stuffed but the school is backing up daily using Acronis backup software which takes an image of the server onto an external network drive. So if a drive did fail it just needs to be replaced and the server restored from the backup image. RAID 0 will give them the perfomance they want so what do you all think? cheers

The school decided to go with a company they used before, they tend to be wary of using new suppliers, so I left it up to the school to decide but thanks for the help.

Yeah its 2008 standard £60, not sure if its r2 or just win 2008 P.S can the CALS from the Win 2K server be used with the Win 2008 server or do you have to buy new CALS?

Thanks all for the advice, some quotes have started to come in now, all around the £2000 mark. I will now be contacting the LEA for software prices, Windows 2008 Server Lic costs about £60 as apposed to a few hundred quid!

It will be the school Tech, this is his account that he said I could use, he will be doing all the seting up.

If Raid 5 improves performance then that sounds good, may look into sas drives, the schools current server has 1 ide drive and takes a year to do anything!

how does raid 5 work? will it require a seperate backup?

Its a primary school so uses Integris G2, no SIMS. The server won't be used for emails. No web hosting Around 100-200 clients. Cheers P.S have been looking at a site called serversdirect.co.uk, has anyone used them before?
