That is what I suspected. Now to get Frog to confirm it also and put a timeout on the password cache! I will now be adding an extra step to our password change policy to include logging into Frog using the new password.

We did have a similar problem some time ago. We set a BIOS password and then discovered a second method into the BIOS which did not require the password. This was fixed by updating the BIOS to the latest version. I guess I need to check to see if we can set a HDD password on the new BIOS. Out of interest do you know how they managed to do this? It will save me quite some time trying to work this out. And, yes, the password is written into the HDD firmware.

Just come up against something very strange recently with the AD authentication of our Frog box. We noticed that one student was logging into Frog as someone else in order to access the network home drive. Immediately we changed the victims password thinking that that was job done. Except that I then saw the student still logging in as the victim. I then tried logging in as the victim with their old password and indeed I was allowed in. I then thought I had made a mistake and changed the wrong users password. So I logged on to a computer (not Frog) as the victim with their old password and it failed, then I tried the new password and it worked. I have since replicated this problem. By: Created a test student in AD and set a password (A). Create the matching user in Frog with random password and AD authentication ticked. Log into Frog with password A. It works. Reset the password (B) in AD and wait for AD replication to happen. Log into Frog with password A. It still works. Try a different browser and log into Frog with password A. It still works. Try yet another browser and log into Frog with password A. It still works. Log into Frog with password B. It works. Log into Frog with password A. It now fails. Has anyone else seen this? Would someone else have the time to try this out to see if it is just us?

We have had a couple of other different problems that my boss 'reliably' informed me could be done. His information had come from someone senior at Frog. We looked at it, scratched our heads and came to the conclusion we couldn't do it and we needed help. We called tech support and they scratched their heads and said it couldn't be done. We then asked the boss to get this senior person to tell us how implement the feature. No surprise that we never heard back.

I was going to suggest this same thing. The external drive bay panels are reinforced on the inside so the plastic bits cannot be pushed in.

If you ever find a solution to this then I would love to know about it. We too have a two week timetable and I am sure it would be helpful to have this shown. I would wonder if the information was pulled from your MIS. Perhaps someone was responsible for setting something in the diary or the timetable in the MIS. Did someone responsible for putting data into your MIS leave or change? Has the MIS extraction tool been upgraded? As I have said before I like Frog but their support is slow and documentation almost nonexistent.

We have been using Stone computers for the last 3 years without problems. This time I might even look at the Lenovo all in ones. We did have HP7800's but within a week the 3.5" drive covers were being removed as where the badges and the room looked a mess.

I also had a problem with an intermittent problem where an aircon unit blew on the patch lead making it contract and loose contact. Replacing the lead resolved the issue.

We have it going fairly close to us. We are even being let out to see it in Tatton park. Not only that they are even buying all the staff & student a t-shirt with Knutsford Academy - Home on it.

As @plexer did, we went with .org.uk. My line manager initially wanted .com but I did persuade him that the .org.uk made us look more the UK based non-profit charitable organisation that we are. That said we did but .co.uk & .com for the next couple of years at least. We also still have our .sch.uk address, which we will keep for the duration of our stay with the LEA broadband (those days are numbered).

This is exactly my problem, a member of SLT is very vocal about the use of Apple kit. As soon as Apple bring out something shiny and new we must purchase loads of them. They don't spend any time thinking about how they will be used or even what for, they just want them as the schools expense rather than their own. My plan if we can pull it off is to have three companies demonstrate the three types of tablets in the same meeting. That way we can see which one at least as far as the demo goes will be the best for us. It will then be obvious about which can do some things and not others.

We have a member of staff in our school who is very pro Apple and wants to bring an Apple rep in to demo the use of iPads in school to our SLT. I have to say that I am not a huge fan of Apple and in general I am still sceptical about the use of tablets of any kind being used heavily in schools. I think the technology to manage these devices and integrate them in to our other systems is not yet mature and we would end up with a very expensive white elephant. That said I am all for using the right tool for the right job. Anyway, to the point. I would like to be able to have a demo from someone about the use of Android & Windows tablets in schools as well as Apple. I want to make sure that SLT see that there are alternatives to Apple. Does anyone know of a company which could demo any or all of the various tablet technologies for use in a school?

Same goes for Server 2003 R2.

As you say this is ridiculous. I always thought the exam boards were in a world of their own when it came to this requirement. How can they expect anyone to meet their standards if they cannot offer any solutions to this problem. I know it would never happen but perhaps all the boards should join together and go Microsoft & LibreOffice / OpenOffice and ask them to produce an easy way to disable the spell checker.

as @localzuk says, turn it into modem mode and use your own wireless router. The wireless part of these routers is very poor, though I have not tried it on the latest firmware version. As soon as my router was upgraded modem mode was turned on and I hooked up my old router has worked without problems (it's Netgear as well!).

As @Ross2k5 says forcing the cache folders to the local drive might help, it did resolve a similar issue for us. Originally we used Network Home Redirector scripts (NHR) when the clients were on Tiger, but now we are on Leopard / Snow Leopard I use MCX redirection (AFP548 - Leopard's Built-in Network Home Folder Redirector).

At least you don't have HP DC7800's, the last time I asked HP the 3.5" floppy bezel was £42 each (dropping to £35 for 100)! I agree with you in both statements. In a previous job (laboratory technician in a university Physics department) I was also responsible for PAT testing several thousand items, as part of our training we were told that we should remove from service items with any damage to the case. As I was also the person responsible for maintaining the same kit I never had that happen as I had already repaired it. I was also fortunate that the staff and students working the the lab were excellent at reporting faulty kit so I rarely found damaged kit at PAT test time. I just wish staff and students in my current school had the same desire to look after the equipment.

When I first got my job in the school they had no way of remoting to a machine to help out, not great with a two site school and all of the support staff located on one site. So before I got round to a full install of VNC I started using ultraVNC single click (Single Click - UltraVNC - VNC - Remote Support Software - Remote PC Access Service - UVNC - Free - OpenSource). This way when a member of staff phoned up asking for help I got them to run the application, it connects to a listening VNC client. As the software is under their control there can be no complaints about you 'spying' on them.

With ultraVNC the ask permission dialog only appears if a user is logged in. With the machine at the logon screen you can just gain control so if you want to test something out then there is no problem.

We have been using Stone PC's for the last 3 years and have had very little damage done to them. When comparing them to the other rooms of HP's & NEC's these are in great condition even after 3 years.

I have just last week I did this. We are using Exchange 2003, but I did not want go go for upgrading / rebuilding as I was only given a weeks warning of the need of a new unique disclaimer for the school, previously this was done by the LEA's relay. We need this because we became an academy on 1st April (sadly not a joke). Anyway I built a Linux server with Postfix & Amavis-new to act as a relay between Exchange 2003 and the LEA. Fortunately adding a new server is quite easy now that we have invested in a virtual server system and the software setup cost us nothing but time. Postfix can trigger Amavis as mail passes through it. Amavis then can do among other things spam filter, virus check and add a disclaimer. I decided that I would spam filter and virus check all outgoing mail (incoming is done by the LEA, soon to be done by Postfix as well when I have a little time) just in case we ended up having something go wrong in school and we end up spamming the world, at least I would know and be able to do something about it. If you need further details then let me know, I am in the process of documenting what I did.

I get the same feeling, still no reply from Frog about my 16 month old bug. I must get round to making some Frog stickers for my office wall so I can tally up the number of Frog bugs I have found and reported for killing, or perhaps not as my wall may not be big enough.

When I last looked at the importer logs it seems that it was working. In my case I am running the import at 6am, if I run it manually during the day then it fails.
