I have just googled the U3650 part for the Dell and unless I am mistaken this is a 1000BASE-LX where the laser is a wavelength of 1310nm. The HP modules are as you say 1000BASE-SX which operate at a wavelength of 850nm. If this true then the two fibre modules won't even see each other. Apart from checking the two fibre modules I would also do as someone else has suggested. Shine a torch down each fibre to ensure that you have both ends in the same order. Steve Atkinson.

I am no expert on HP kit yet, though the school I work for has got HP Procurve kit in place and are using VLANs. From the config I can see on one of my switches. Uplinks: DEFAULT_VLAN - untagged, all other VLANS are tagged. All other ports: Appropriate VLAN set to untagged and all others as 'no'.

I have used Excel Data Systems (Excel Datasystems). They were generally very good, just a little slow providing the disposal certificate. They would charge me a fee for the collection but for each base unit or monitor, etc I sent them they would give back £1-2. If you sent them enough stuff you could even come out in profit. You would need to contact them for the cost of a trip to Birmingham and for their current 'price' list.

They work fine on WPA-PSK TKIP (and AES). I had some problems getting it to work properly though. Making sure the key was entered correctly. You only get asked once so typos are not spotted easily. You have to wait until you authenticate or not. It seems to take a long time to authenticate you on to the network. This means I thought the wireless was not working when actually I was being too impatient. I did seem to have to set the key up twice. It worked once until I restarted the machine and then it seemed to forget. However this may have just been the problem just mentioned.

I am new to ISA 2004 and Surfcontrol 5.0 and just discovered a problem with our filtering. If I attempt to view a site which is blocked (based on its FQDN) using it's IP address then I can get past our URL filtering. For example: http://www.facebook.com/ - blocked by Surfcontrol http://69.63.176.140/ - not blocked by anything. How do I block URLs which are based on IP addresses instead of FQDNs using ISA or Surfcontrol 5.0? Thanks.

I currently use an HP managed solution and it works very well. However if I were to get a second go then I would take a serious look at Extricom (Extricom) wi-fi blanket system. It claims fast roaming and higher client bandwidth.

Have you thought setting up a streaming server to share the files instead of a traditional file server? There a probably a number of products you could use, a brief list. Shoutcast - audio only I think Windows 2000 came with a media server. I don't know if it exists for new versions though. Real's Helix server.

Copying documents should be fairly easy. Use a USB flash drive or external USB hard drive. A FAT formatted device can be plugged into the Mac and it will appear as an icon on the desktop.

Agreed. I have used it frequently and fixed many a printer. One old HP printer we had needed to have some additional elastic bands wrapping round the roller to increase the diameter, cleaning did not help that one.
