You also need to take into account the layout of the room and the visibility of the board. Check that the board is visible from the back of the room for students who are at most of average height. There is no point putting the boards at the perfect height of the user if the image is not visible. If you do need to put the board in a low height then you need to think about mounting the board higher and putting in a step for the user.

Quite probably get everything web based like Google Docs or Office 365 or build an RDP system for everyone to remote into. At least the data would never really leave the building, restrictions on printing may need to be enforced and policy on not viewing sensitive data on screen in a cafe! That though is little different to having encrypted laptops out and about.

We are looking at a salary sacrifice scheme, like bike to work, to allow staff to purchase a device at a slightly cheaper rate and make a saving on tax. They will not be required to use the device for work but it will be encouraged. Though from our part it will likely require us to get an RDP system working so they can connect from the guest network.

I am sorry to say that I can't make it this year, our annual summer holiday (yes - it is a little early) has been booked and paid for. There have been a number of printed newspaper articles that have been proved to be inaccurate because the journalists were lazy and just took what was written in Wikipedia. My favourite was my next door neighbors soon who wrote an essay on the live of William Shakespeare. In the essay he had him working in several places the most notable being Starbucks! He had no concept that this could be wrong. That information came from Wikipedia. I too refer to Wikipedia, but always check vital facts with other resources, especially if an error will make me look like an idiot.

I did the same adding "logon" and then created a log off script which did the same but with "logoff" instead. That way I know how long a user has been using the machine. I must investigate to see if I can do the same with AD authenticated OS X machines.

I'm off to check out the full state of the phone cabling as the window fitters have found many more unknown cables running across the outside of the bridge. I suspect there may be a few hundred pounds to spend on running a proper phone multicore or a few thousand on replacing the existing phone system with VOIP. I'd like to do the latter, but we don't have any spare cash (as far as I know).

The window fitters are going to hide it behind some MDF panels. The new windows fit in a different way to the old and a considerable amount of making good is needed with a lot of space to fill.

We are in the process of having a lot of windows replaced at the school at the moment and today I got a call from the foreman asking me to come down and inspect some phone cables that run through the bridge between two buildings. In the middle of the bridge we find a DP box, so we open it up thinking that we could split the cables and pull them back each way to get them out of the way. What do we find? Just a loop of cable! I can just see a pair of cabling techs working from both ends of the cable and meeting in the middle, swearing at each other and then wondering what they should do with the slack, "I know we could just stuff it in this box, nobody will ever know".

I would agree with this, though the need to keep the whole phone system up and running is not quite as vital as it used to be given the proliferation of mobiles. If the budget is limited then picking the appropriate targets, such as the main office would make sense. What I will be doing is a risk assessment on the results of a power failure taking into account the frequency of them and the cost of installing UPS' all over the place. In our situation it is quite likely that I and SLT will decide that we don't have sufficient power failures and the impact of those failures is minimal after protecting some critical staff members.

I've seen something similar but it did affect several servers. The cause was the LEA directly attached router (proving access to the LEA intranet) responding to ARP requests. Someone in the LEA had set up a test network on the same IP address range as our network. We worked around it by pulling the plug on the intranet until they dropped the test network.

Sat at home surrounded by the noise of builders. The weather is very cold but the skies are cloudless, must go and take a photo so in the summer I can remind myself that we do get sun this close to Manchester.

Sounds like there is a school for engineers to learn how to over engineer laptops. I forget how many screws there are in the white MacBook, but every other one is different and to cap it off there are a pair that are redundant. I am told they were put there by Steve Jobs to make the design look right!

I have seen some reports of sprinklers being used in server rooms, but to make it work properly they were linked to the power system. So when the sprinkler goes off so does the power. The argument being that if you clean and dry the hardware then it is likely to work (at least sufficiently to recover the data). However I can imagine most schools would have the UPS in the same rack as the server making it hard to keep it dry in the unlikely event they actually linked the power & sprinklers. I would also worry about accidental triggering.

I too would question the wisdom of this. What is it you are trying to achieve by giving them admin rights (apart from a support headache)?

We used to get this at each and every student logon. They used to get a new default profile from the computer, and it looks like the installation of newer IE's caused this problem as they did not update the default profile on the computer. I fixed it by logging on to a machine, fixing the search providers by opening up the search providers tool and adding Google to it. I then took this profile made it a default profile and put it into the NetLogon folder.

I was disappointed not to find SoftCat. Actually it was a good day today. Managed to bump into an old friend (Heather at Loxit) and met up with a number of potentially useful suppliers (@Net-Ctrl). I forget which company it is, but they have a Caterham F1 car in the mall outside the main hall (roughly entrance N6).

We had a similar problem when we switched ISP's. Our email used to come in via the LEA mail relay / filter. After we moved the LEA mail still came via the old broadband link, this was because they had configured their mail relay to send the messages to a specific IP rather than looking up the MX record. A quick change at the LEA and all was working again. So I would look to see if you can get full headers from these problem domains and see if there is anything common between them. It could be they are all using the same relay and that relay is configured to a specific IP rather than lookup to MX.

I hope that goes well. It was one of the reasons we got 3, just in case something happened to one of them there would not be one on their own, we could then take our time introducing another.
