Thanks. What version of the software are you using? - I'm a going to free trial the Servicedesk option as it has ITIL compliance but it is somewhat more expensive!

Are you hosting it yourself or using them?

Thanks Steve Its throwing up lots of errors because many of the path names are more than 248 chars long. The scary thing about this is that many of the folders are backups of memory sticks etc and they will re-appear when they backup them up again

No I'm afraid not. Its just random folders that don't have file names and they are same wherever you view them from (i.e. the server or a desktop PC)

That's interesting. I have no idea how and why though!

No unfortunately Veeam falls over (the tape backup part, that is) when it encounters these folders as it can't enumerate the size of the backup. I could copy/backup the the whole share onto a big HDD but as we have a unused tape library it seems a shame to let it stand idle. The share is also backed up to the cloud so this isn't critical - hence there isn't any real urgency. It sure is mind numbing trying to find them though!

No... they don't have a name - there is just a folder icon! They all seem to relate to some sort of Microsoft install as the folders beneath them are always the same and are empty. We have also found a load of folders with what appears to be Chinese/Korean characters in the name which has caused the same problem with Veeam. Very odd

Thanks... I hadn't thought of this so will give it a go and see what I get. Anything has got to be better than trying to find them manually. I don't think there are many of them, it's just it's a huge share!

This is driving me mad... I am trying to run a Veeam tape backup on a large staff shared area where all the departments have their own folders and keep their resources in them. There seems to be an issue with Veeam that it will fall over if it finds a folder that doesn't have a name, and until they fix this bug I need to find these folders and remove them. Trouble is that there are thousands of folders on the shared area and are nested beyond belief. Does anyone have any suggestions how I might go about finding them all before my head explodes! Thanks! BTW If this is the wrong area then apologies as the share is hosted on a 2012 server!

I'm not so sure. All this happened on Blatter's watch and I cannot see how his position is tenable any more. FIFA have been corrupt for years and this has been a long time coming (in the same way it was for the IOC a few years back) and if he doesn't go or is re-elected I cannot see how they can continue. One thing I'm sure of is that Blatter would never have the decency or honour to resign

The first person I've heard say they like the web interface! Thanks for the link - we replaced 2 of our 3 hosts a month or so ago and we stayed on 5.5 because of the Veeam issue. I think I will go for the upgrade over the summer!

Been hanging on upgrading until Veeam support it fully. There didn't seem to be an awful lot of obvious changes from the release note - ones that would affect me I mean, and they are persisting with the awful web client!

Ours is boring but practical HWS-SR-Role so hws-sr-sims hws-sr-sqlsvr hws-sr-access hws-sr-backup and so it goes on. Even I'm bored now

We have a BYOD portal for students and staff and they get the same filtering policies applied as they would if they were on a desktop PC. This is all done via our Ruckus/Smoothwall set up using their AD credentials. We've had it running for a couple of years now and its been fine. Not really sure why you would want to make the BYOD filtering stricter than their PC one - I think it adds an admin overhead and more complexity!

I forgot to add we only use them in the following places - 1.Server Room 2.To backup a remote NAS that we use for our Veeam backups 3. A central comms cabinet that is in an area that has had some power issues in the past I know some schools that use them on almost every edge switch, but I see little point as all the PC's will switch off if the power fails in the same area - plus it adds a big maintenance overhead

My understanding of UPS use is so a graceful shutdown of the servers and other attached kit can be achieved, and not to run them until the power comes back on (unless you have emergency generators of course). I was led to believe that 10-20 minutes run time was all that was needed for a UPS and that's what I have used to calculate the size of it. We get 40 minutes out of our 2 monster UPS's so an hour for you is pretty decent I'd say!

I watch it every year if possible - a guilty pleasure if you like! I think Graham Norton is quite good at presenting it, although I probably prefer Wogan

I saw a documentary ages ago and they used placebos (i.e told them there was wi-fi when there wasn't) and it seems that it was pretty much all in their heads (no pun intended). One person they investigated had lined most of his flat with tin foil and wore a kind of tin foil scull-cap. It was very difficult to take him seriously and he clearly he wasn't aware of the health concerns around aluminium foil!

Seem this issue before when installing an update and I had to stop another service to get it to install,. Can't remember which off the top of my head but its in a call note somewhere

The was a Channel 4 documentary on the same subject about 5 or 6 years ago which was equally full of bad science and speculation - which came out days before we were about to have our very first wi-fi system installed! The advocate in that program was some guy who walked around waving a device which from what I can remember, just gave the signal strength for a particular frequency - which was unsurprisingly, quite high near a mobile phone mast. If a link is ever discovered will everyone be turning off their wi-fi and cordless phones at home - or their mobile phones for that matter? I don't think so. People know smoking can kill you but they still do it. Most of us are so reliant on this tech today that we will take the risk.

We have used Primex wireless clocks here for a number of years and they have performed faultlessly. Wireless Synchronized Clocks | Temperature Monitoring | Primex Wireless We have a central transmitter in one building which all the clocks pick up from and that's it. They take a C battery usually (depending on what size clock) and last for ages. They also do wireless relays that use the same transmitter and we have a couple that link to our fire alarm for class changes. We are a pretty large site with lots of separate buildings and signal hasn't been an issue so far.

We have done a couple over the last few years and while they can be useful they can also be great for those people with an axe to grind. One comment we had was "I wish the IT department put as much effort in to their work as other departments" - which while being completely unfair had quite a demoralising effect on the team, and it took me a while to persuade them that it was a one off by someone who didn't have the courage to come and complain to us in person. In the second survey the questions were drawn up by the Head/SLT and sent out on paper! So much for technology!
