You might not be using Office at all in 2018!
-
Not necessarily - if you have a select agreement now you can still get an upgrade through an academic select agreement. It's what we have done and if you plan if using Win7 for a similar length of time it will certainly be cheaper to continue with select.

I think security updates and driver support are the reason to stop using it. A virtual system is one area where you would likely to continue using XP because you can still use the drivers of the hypervisor and the security problems are of little consequence if you go back to a clean install on each reboot. Have you noticed though - that if you a virtualise Win7 vs WinXP on identical modern hardware then XP is faster - well it is on my system.

Importantly, Administrators can use Google+ in a walled garden and not share with people outside of the school . Although there is potential for bullying (as with email, chat) this could be a good opportunity to educate students in the way of social networking, About Google+ Premium features - Google Apps Help Set a default sharing restriction for posts - Google Apps Help

ESXi would be a good choice with an upgrade path for when you have some money. For a fully free (and unsupported) virtual setup then KVM and Ovirt are they way to go. The commercial (and supported) versions are available (quite cheaply) as Redhat Enterprise Virtualisation.

I've been a cyber nerd for a long time now. If it has now become cool then I'm changing my name.

Well they should! half the work is done already.

No, it tells you where it *should* be running. you'd need lsof to dig deeper.

Before you go re-inventing the wheel, there are a bunch of OpenSource EPOS systems out there: POSper | Free Business & Enterprise software downloads at SourceForge.net Floreant POS | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net Lemon Pos | Free Business & Enterprise software downloads at SourceForge.net Openbravo source code repositories this is even php (web?) based: Open Source Point of Sale | Free Business & Enterprise software downloads at SourceForge.net If your determined with python (and it is a good choice) then there are projects you could collaborate on: wxpos - Python cross platform point of sale software - Google Project Hosting

I've got a basic 'kick' I think it was about £25 @CPC. Very handy around school.

I've done 3yr and 5yr plans. I use a spreadsheet that lists ongoing hardware renewals that is subdivided into Desktop, Server, Network, Thin Clients categories. I have another page that lists ongoing software maintenance costs and another for ongoing printing costs. For long term thinking it doesn't just stop at renewals - you really need to link everything to the whole school plan. ie - what is the school ICT vision, what are the expected outcomes and what ICT resources need to be put in place to achieve this. You can then start working out what extra needs to be fitted (wireless, byod etc) and what doesn't need to be renewed (eg less it suites etc)

Hi @plexer Interestingly, our ICT/Technology students have just finished a reprap and have now decided they want a UAV. Would you be up for a collaborative project? I'm not leading this but can put you in touch if ok.

Help needed for a report to my boss
CyberNerd replied to Simcfc73's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
IOS, Android, Windows, OSX and Linux KS3,KS4,KS5 Both, some are school owned and some are user owned. not at KS2 Some screen breakages (rare). If students own the devices, or feel that they own them then they tend to look after them. A good wired and wireless system is absolutely critical for any mobile device. It needs to be robust and reliable. I guess. pretty much all our software is VLE based. We buy windows only software as an absolute last resort - then run it over citrix for mobile users. A failsafe guide pretty much goes like this. 1) get SLT to agree some policies, AUPS etc (with you) 2) Get a decent wired and wireless infrastructure that can cope with the demand 3) Get a decent broadband connection (we needed to go out of LA support) and simple proxy setup. 4) Ditch MSOffice - it won't run on most wireless devices, so make it clear to staff that Office files are not acceptable to use with students. Google apps meets all the demands you will need in a school except for A level ICT which requires some type of database app. Terminal services won't cut it unless you have a lot of cash to buy licenses for all the students. 5) Get a terminal services environment for all those 'difficult' apps including flash based things for IOS. 6) load up the VLE with content - most educational apps are vle based anyway now. 7) inform parents and wait for inevitable dislikes 8) ??? 9) profit. -

Sorry I don't remember if there was a permanent fix or whether we just re-routed any connections through our dansguardian 'backup' -
Nothing new here its what Microsoft have *always* done. Remember the mantra 'don't deploy until SP1' and 'RC is the new alpha'. Some journalists now see this move as a turnaround for MS http://semiaccurate.com/2012/11/14/microsoft-has-failed/

you should be able to do this easily enough with squid - theres some config examples for the captive portal features here: ConfigExamples - Squid Web Proxy Wiki

The fairest thing would be for these small companies to actually start offshoring their firms and avoid paying corporation tax themselves. If it was done on a really epic scale by everyone then the Govt. would soon change the rules.
-
on our bladecentre it is done in the UEFI interface - the bios/software of the emulex device is integrated into the UEFI. IIRC the setting is 'switch independant mode'. Failing that why not just bond the nics?
-
look in the BIOS/UEFI - you should be able to turn off the virtual nic functionality.
-
We've got some 10GB NICs that have virtual interfaces. They are great for things like iscsi where you want jumboframes going over the iscsi link, but not over the regular network. You should be able to tun off the virtual nics in the bios (I can on ours) but I think you should persevere and setup resilient links if your switch is able to take virtual fabric. edit. IIRC our cards are emulex too, and the switch is BNT.
