  1. MS just sacked their head of windows8. BBC News - Steven Sinofsky: Windows division head leaves Microsoft Clearly a few in the company don't like it.
  2. Indeed. It's not the companies fault that they are paying a low tax rate, that is their prerogative. Any criticism should be leveled at Government for allowing the situation.
  3. MS are already pushing us to it by dropping DX development for W7. Microsoft forces fragmentation by making newest DirectX graphics software exclusive to Windows 8 | The Verge Like it or not, if yo choose windows you choose win8.
  4. They could lock him up with Hans Reiser so they could collude on an antiviral filesystem.
  5. The menu.lst is from a grub 1 boot loader and Ubuntu now uses grub2 so the menu.lst file doesn't exist. I'm still using grub1 (on redhat) so can't help much more than that. Some reading material here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 GRUB 2 bootloader - Full tutorial
  6. BBC News - Government bans calculators from primary maths tests Quote of the day BBC News - Leaked TES curriculum draft panned by experts
  7. Thinstation and Centos. The Centos ones aren't really a problem because they are managed by Spacewalk. Currently using passwordless ssh, so any ssh+shutdown command would work. We have a mix of Redhat/Centos linux and 2008R2 servers.
  8. *Please* add in an ssh/shutdown -h option for linux clients. I have 350+ of them and currently need to use a different method for shutting these down so anything that will work cross platform would be a huge bonus for me!
  9. I've not found any of those limitations on Android when using Chrome. IOS may be different.
  10. To get the pedagogical benefits from Google apps you really need to be working in Google apps format. You can upload and share MSOffice formats (or any other file type) but then you limit yourself to using MSOffice which isn't available on 95% of mobile devices. Unfortunately Office365 doesn't come close to the features that Google apps has so to get these benefits staff need to convert their documents to Google apps. The MS Office plugin simply uploads files without converting them, as does the Google drive app. The best solution we have found is simply to ditch MSOffice, hence a change in working practice. Staff should write their documents in Google docs in the first instance because they don't understand the difference between a converted MSOffice file and a 'real' MSOffice file in Google apps. They end up trying to use the features of Google apps on unconverted MSOffice files and get stuck because their students can't edit these unconverted files.
  11. Google apps is the ultimate solution for bBYOD. It has significant advantages for home access but requires a change in practice that some schools will find difficult to cope with given their current ms infrastructure.
  12. leave it to tomorrow and get Google apps. It whips Office 365 into submission.
  13. I somehow doubt that after Christmas you'll see too many of these on your network. It'll be nexus 7's and ipad mini's.
  14. I don't really understand your post. It sounds like you don't want to support any non microsoft products, and although you don't like the direction they have taken with windows you'll just wait around incase they fix it. I may be wrong, but it does seem a bit naive to me - given that many schools design their network specifically so that are not boxed into a corner by MS. There's a big bright world out there full of stunning, innovative and cost effective technology. It only takes fairly minor adjustments, some out of the box thinking and you will be able to accommodate these devices.
  15. We use this method as well.
  16. Most schools will do just that, and MS know it. Other schools will just move on to something else. MS isn't the only solution like it was ten years ago..
  17. Bypass Steam Linux Beta Invitations http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/11/reddit-users-bypass-valve-linux-beta-invitations?fb_action_ids=10151493080598082&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=other_multiline&action_object_map={%2210151493080598082%22%3A372971426124546}&action_type_map={%2210151493080598082%22%3A%22og.likes%22}&action_ref_map=[]
  18. Is this just a tax thing? surely there is an opportunity for us in the first world to ship you products?
  19. We use two methods for this: Firstly for linux clients we just mirror the Chrome repository to a local server and tell spacewalk to issue that as the upgrade repository. For windows clients we disable the auto update via group policy and then send any updates out via a group policy. The problem you have is that ""Address or URL of proxy server: \\my local server"" doesn't mean a local update server, rather it is the address of an internet proxy server (such as squid) which networks use to cache and filter web connections. If you were using a proxy server then presumably the download would be cached on that.
  20. The default device policy will audit apps and turn off the camera. You'll need to wait for 4.2 to support multi users.
  21. So why not use the students google apps account?
  22. That's down to the schools infrastructure. At our place students can bring in their own ipads and get access to exactly the same applications that they have on school computers with the exception of video/music editing and some 3D tools. They can access their own files, email, VLE, produce documents in google and print via web printing. It's a simple enough thing to do.
  23. Rational, liberal & sane people across the world rejoice
  24. OMG hold the press - how will Google apps keep up. Oh wait, they were doing that 2 yrs ago.
