  1. They could save the money and more if they just stopped BSF. Thats a cash eating monster.
  2. The only thing i can think of is to the volume licence Vista/7 as they have to be Activated every 6 months from one of your internal servers i believe.
  3. Tasc Software have a product called Insight which we pay £500 a year for, all it requires is you run SIMS. Its small, not expensive, easy to install, self hosted and support is excellent, and looks pritty.
  4. I was up until 1AM playing this game Got the level 23 though then had enough!
  5. I was thinking more on the technical side in terms of what to use to actually generate the competition in, anything out there that creates games for moodle that people can keep trying at to get the best score?
  6. Really wanting to push Moodle from september onwards, got a few departments onboard to use it for their subjects. To try and make Moodle even more student focused I'd like to run some kind of competetion in moodle with a prize every so often, using moodle to record the highest score's automatically. Any ideas on what kind of competition to run?
  7. I'll continue to use XP until the end. It just "works". You can put Windows Vista in a nice dress and put lipstick on and call it Windows 7, but its still awful once you get underneath. I'd rather use Windows 2000 than Vista or 7, its more efficent at getting jobs done!!
  8. Not that harsh when you think some of Microsoft's own employees cannot stand Vista. I still miss NT 4, my favorite Windows OS ever...
  9. Just means you will be limited to 3 non over lapping channels, (1,6,11) as its the 2.8Ghz 5Ghz has loads of non overlapping channels.
  10. Are you aware the cards in these are 2.8Ghz N only? and not 5Ghz.
  11. The volume licence is "upgrade" only. You have to have a Windows licence with the PC to start with. This can be a retail copy out of the shop or an OEM. If your old PC's have an OEM Windows 98 licence it lives and dies with that PC, and cannot be transfered to your new ones and then upgraded. I presume thats what you mean by 100 copys of 98 in a cupboard
  12. I did the opposite 6 years ago , went from working in an University IT Department to a High School. They are very different worlds, not sure i would want to go back. I find the main different is in a school you have to be jack of all trades, at uni their is normally somebody for each section such as printers, networking, labs, backups, website. At least you get more support and respect working in a Uni IT Dept. Hope you enjoy the different world.
  13. Just buy some PCI Graphics cards. Normally have 2 or 3 of them on a board.
  14. I believe Microsoft Product Activation will convert your vista key to an XP over the phone. Most people just install the volume licence version of XP on Vista Business licenced machines.
  15. Do you not have all your AP's broadcasting the same SSID?
  16. C:\ will not appear in the list of volumes to capture unless it has been sysprep'd. Have you just forgot to do this part?
  17. 1. Yes its an Intel 5100 supporting ABGN 2. Yes the router (D-Link 1522) is connected at 1Gbit 3. The server did have other clients connected but performance monitor did not show disk usage going through the roof. Might try another server. 4. It was via the main school network, but there is 1GBit feed to every switch. 5. The wireless router only has this 1 laptop connected. The laptop i'm using is a fresh install of Windows XP , and another one with Windows 7 on fresh install, no AV, nothing else installed at all. Clean as a whistle.
  18. Has anybody here used Wireless N yet, and if so what speeds do you get with it? Standing about 6 feet from the router i get a connection of between 150 Megabits per second and 260 Megabits per second. When i copy a large file, i'm getting about 4.6 Megabytes per second through it. Now unless i'm wrong, if i do 4600 x 8 = 36.8 Megabits per second, way off 150-260. I'm using the 5Ghz zone on channel 100 as this is nice a free compared to the cluttered 2.4Ghz. I've used netstumbler to see if there is any interferance and it all looks good. So is around 5 Megabytes a second throughput "real world" speeds for draft 802.11n ? This cannot be right surely as i get get 2.4 Megabytes a second throughput on our 802.11a wifi which connects at 54 Megabits per second.
  19. So many sites i use are broke in IE8 , like CAT Global's booking , does not work, Joomla DOCLINK does not work, and the more i use IE8 the less i like it.
  20. Are Microsoft losing the plot ? Microsoft forbids changes to Windows 7 netbook wallpaper ? The Register I've already read a few weeks ago that OEM's will keep pushing XP Home on Netbooks unless MS reduce price of Windows 7 Licence, now Microsoft do this? Users will not want Windows 7 Starter, OEM's will not want Windows 7 Starter...
  21. Surely you could get SIM Free for that price instead of Pay as you go.
  22. We use a mix of Imaging and Automated Deployment of XP. Even if the Laptop comes with XP Pro on out the box its still wiped, just for performance as OEM's have a habbit of putting so much junk on the machines its just not funny.
  23. After MANY MANY hours of googling last night and fiddling i found what the cause of the problem is, it is somthing Microsoft thought would be a good idea... TCP/IP Autotuning. netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled Typing the above at the command prompt and rebooting fixed it. I think this nasty peice of work should be turned of by default.
  24. 7 different models of laptop 2 different models of netbooks 6 different models of PC I'm conviced its somthing microsoft have changed as i said before Windows 95,98,NT4,2000,XP and Server 2003 do not have this issue, its only since Vista.
  25. In the video its on an Atheros AR8121, but it does this on any network adaptor or any pc as long as it as Windows Vista or Windows 7 on it.
