make sure you have one physical and one virtual DC at the very least. If you can cope without having HA then Free ESX and shared storage is the way to go. Use GhetoVCB to backup the machines. Citrix you can do more for free, but it's no where near as good ( we run both ) Going to a full 3 server cluster of ESX will cost you a fair whack ( think I worked it out at 20Kish including 2 servers ( with facility for a 3rd , and some lower end storage ) Use second hand Cisco 3560's for the network, they are cheap but can't be beaten, buy a couple of spares just in case one ever does throw a wobbly. VDI in a box may suit you, I can put you in touch with a very very competent and freindly company that will help with all your virtualisation needs from single server visor to clusters and VDI if you wish. Out of all the companies we had building our system they are the only one we are happy to be paying for a support contract ( not that we realy need it ). Yeah both would be super for our application. If it could be a half pallet 100x120x90cm and max 600kg (not going to get anywhere near that weight!) that would be gr8. and I can get it collected. (it's just a standard pallet btw, just half height so 90cm not 180.. Not an issue i expect Rob

I don't see any good reason to force schools to use it. We don't even have a .sch.uk domain as we are an Academy. we use @abcd.org.uk We have 4 main email domains, 1 for each of our 2 schools, one for the overarching federal staff who are not affiliated to a specific school and one to our 6th form. 1 peg does not fit all holes and schools need not be dictated to on this. Teamviewer "costs" for none domestic use. I used to use NoMachine FreeNX server at the school, from that using RDP to the clients. Worked very well and that was 5 years ago. Rob

Indeed, After the flood subsided at out place on the Sunday, Myself and my Senior Tech met on site with the SLT ( the site manager had moved to a new job 2 weeks earlier and his senior had his own house to unflood.) At 9am next morning there was a 6FM exam taking place. At this point in time ~1PM on sunday we had no power, so no light, no heating, no nothing and no ETA for it comming back on. We had switched off all the main breakers ( the big 300A ones one the main power incommers ) to prevent any major damage when/if the power came back on. The sub board were very badly marked btw. Power came back on at 8PM, I went in in the very very pitch black at 6AM, restored only power to the main 1st floor hall area and the main boiler room. And very fortunatly I had a posative call to the Head to say we were good to run the exam. Power had to remain off to the rest of the building whilst the waters still subsided. I dispatched our second techi to machine mart to buy a petrol driven pump as our water heating boiler for another part of the building was under 10ft of water. By mid day we had the LEA in, our main contractor, the insurance company on board. My team did anything we could ( we pumped out the flooded bolier room, organised the plumber to clean and get the boiler running, liased with SLT and contractors, assisted staff. ) Portacabins were in place by the end of the week to create enough space. It's amazing what a team of people can achive even in such bad situations. Rob

it would help if you could get decent wiring diagrams ( VW/Ford ones are difficult ). That's one thing I love with my Jag is the full wiring guide, and I have JLR IDS and a Mongoose lead so I can be told about a shorted out wire in a plug next to the drivers door handle . A decent dealer level tool is a big bonuse. Rob

Staff will be maintained, there will be some furious work going on and pupils will temporarily probably be sharing space with other organisations. the pupils still require 190days of lessons. Work will take place to quickly bring all students and staff back together ( masses of temporary classrooms will already be on the agenda. ) All in all it will be a staged approach to minimise disruption and get back into a new building, but it wont hang arround. We had our ould building flooded by a 1000 year flood in 2k5 which wiped out 90% of our ground floor facility ( probably 40% of our total teaching space. We had 70% students back in two days later and 100% within 7 days. but it was 9 months till we had finished and got sorted properly. Rob

I know a guy who had a sierra, got frustrated with it one day and threw a hammer through one of the rear windows... LOL.... I spent most of my day yesterday with the afformentioned Galaxy in bits after it refused to turn over at all. After spending all that time it transpired that my 9yr old had droped the keys on tuesday and the tiny transponder chip in the key had dropped out. It's the only key! By chance and somehow with some reasonable information on the location of the drop ( he's usualy fairly vauge on most things ) and at 8:20PM in the dark with my phone lamp, I found the tiny 9mmx3mmx2mm black plastic chip. Popped it back in and it fired up nicely. DOH!!! lucky escape there! Rob

My current car is a 2001 Jag S-Type 3.0 Sport. the 4.0 V8 SE would have been better spec but the SE had chrome trim and 16" ugly wheels LOL... had it since November and not at all board with it yet, love every drive. 4.2 S-Type R next though Rob

I use bangernomics. I have to travel 10 miles for every £1 spent to be happy a car has served me well. My Jag is doing OK, but it hardly gets used.. Our galaxy is slowly getting to the point where miles traveld is 10 times spend.. a few previous cars have done very well.. a couple have done badly. My Pedal Bike is 2.5 months old, covered 660 miles and costs so far ~500 so it's doing very well.. I get free servicing for 3 years ( exc parts ) and 3 yrs warranty so i am well on course for that being a BikerBanganomical Super Idea.. TT

We simply give them secure access to our VDI. one client can't even talk to another on the wifi ( preventing pupils atacking each other via our system ) the BYOD device firewalls all connections, a captive portal lets registerd users access VDI and only VDI. they get the same desktop , lockdowns etc as using one of our PC's. so they are subject to the same security as normal. they can't be bothered to use BYOD as the can't use it as a way to get un-filtered internet. out of 300 possible 6fm user. 8 signed up , 1 used it. Expansion tank usualy holds about quater of a litre out of a capacity of 7L If the heater works then water is still being circulated round the engine, if your heater sudenly stops working ( and or the guage shoots off in one direction ) that indicates a significant loss of water. I had that 4 years ago when our Mondeo went cold and the gauge started climbing. I coasted onto the hard shoulder in a cloud of steam, up behind an AA man just finishing changing a wheel for a young lady. Water pump had worn through it's case. Rob
