About MrPARRman

  1. Excellent. :-) Also just got a call back from a fella named Billy on the second line support who was going to run that exact command and confirmed that the Tool is no longer available for general use and is now a technician only tool. Really nice guy, explained how Solus works and its best practices and really put some of my worries to rest. Was very impressed - first time I have had someone who sounded like they wanted to help.
  2. It looks here like the service failed almost instantly as I have yet to come across any where it had installed. I found with ones it did manage to install but didnt show, I could request the agent information and it would respond eventually and the remaining Install Active clients returned could not be contacted. Think the issue is due to the UI waiting for install confirmation from the Agent, and on a failed install never receiving anything back as if I manually visited the machine and installed the agent - it would suddently reply and show as ok. (Altho not able to check status of any installed roles.) Its all sorted now though, with those 5 lines my sanity returned and I am up to 90 clients successfully installed doing 10 at a time. Only another 100 to go.
  3. Woohoo, that fixed the issue. All stuck users now showing as Install Failed and can be removed... one by one, but they can be removed! Thank you for the help! I think this thread now has the only solution on the internet to this issue that is active.
  4. That would be fantastic if you could! :-)
  5. Can anyone with this little application upload it for me please? Phoned Capita again and the only people available are their first line support who sound like they know Solus only in name.
  6. That's the thread I found and the link is dead. :-( I am really at a loss - maybe I am jumping the gun but are there any advantages to this new version? Can I use Solus3 like I do Solus2, and just use it to upgrade the server and have the clients upgrade on there own? Seems like madness to have a system with so many points of failures. If the updates need to be pushed to each client, and the clients cannot be set to automatically update when first ran, every update would need me to run around and turn on every machine on site. Think I have had enough SIMS for one day.
  7. Hmm. I did have a good search, and the ESSUpgrade tool does not appear to still be live on any links. Also phoned Capita and am now stuck waiting another indefinite amount of time. Do you have a link for that piece of software? At this point I am starting to wonder why I bothered upgrading... Solus 2 always seemed to just work. Tell staff an upgrade is going to occur, remote in and run upgrade overnight on the server, staff come in next day and SIMS takes a extra few minutes while it upgrades, the world keeps on spinning. We don't run any POL, and users use machines at varying times each day so it would be almost impossible to get all computers with one update - Is there any real advantage to upgrading to this new system? My only reason thus far was being told that we need it to install SIMs Discover... now I read Capita provide a MSI. One more issue away from a downgrade I fear.
  8. Hi All, Recently began moving towards Solus 3, and naturally assumed I could add all of my teacher machines in one fell swoop. This of course resulted in the deployment service crashing and once restarted, I cannot do anything with the machines listed apart from Check Agent Status which fails as no agent is installed. The options to do anything are greyed out, with all of the client Agent Status being listed as: Install Active but I cannot stop, restart, remove, or do anything. The one way around it I have found is to manually go to the client, install Solus3 Agent manually, refresh the agent status so Solus UI can see it, try to uninstall from Solus UI which fails, this then allows me to remove computer, I can then manually remove the agent from the client, and finally re-add the computer to Solus and the Agent pushs out. A solution, but a very bad one on 150 computers. Is there some way to forcefully remove Agents from the Solus 3 Deployment UI?
  9. Hi All, I have been asked to look into a BYOD scheme for the school I work in and want to ensure that I have all my bases covered and have a full understanding of what is required before committing to a timescale. I have searched around at the way that other people on here have done it but not being all that high end technical a lot of it goes over my head. (I more so manage my site and technicians) I have spoken with our higher end techs and they have said that realistically the best way of achieving this and keeping the network secure would be to VLAN a BYOD wireless network and then use WPAD/Transparent proxy and have students use Home Access + for there network files which sounds simple enough, until you look at a cab and see the previous ICT never labeled the ports so working out what runs where is always a time consuming exercise. We are split over 3 separate buildings, with one building not having a managed solution. (Standard standalone POE APs) - Would I be right in thinking this would need to be replaced to make BYOD a reality? Other glaringly obvious questions are: How would I give students the ability to print? Is this even possible? How would I be able to track which user is browsing which website to ensure child safeguarding? Really I would like to know in a more simplistic explaining how your sites are currently achieving this, what technologies you are using, and in which effective way they are being used. :-) Thank you for any help/insight you can provide.
  10. Aha - looks like that has done it. It was already on Windows Authentication but swapped out my Application pools .Net framework from 4.0 to 2.0 and it at last goes past the grey screen and loads up! :-D Tested on Windows 8 and 7 and both loading so much faster than our very old 2003 server. Thank you very much! :-D
  11. I also have this problem and have no idea what is causing it. I get the Silverlight loading screen then it just goes black. Tried a full reinstall of Eclipse and the problem still exists. Am at a utter loss as to how to get around it as it seems to be a WIN7 issue. Has anyone else resolved this? Silverlight and .Net4 reinstall has not resolved.
  12. With mobile accounts, once you have dragged that over once does it follow the students between computers? The way I have told staff to show students is to open the My Documents folder from the dock, and then add the icon to the sidebar which works I would imagine like yours but does not follow students so needs to be done each time they use a new Mac. At this time the AD home drive is mapping and appears on the dock and students are able to access all of there files - the problem arises when they are within applications and try to save. So they will be using Logic, choose File > Save As, and they cannot see there My Documents folder directly, only the root of the share and the only way to get into My Documents is to go into the share and navigate to there folder. This becomes problomatic as each year group has 150+ accounts within this base share. To better describe my problem, I have a share: //server/folder1/folder2/folder3 Folder 3 is the students AD Home drive and is mapping correctly on the dock. The student can click it and directly access all of there files in the same way as they do on a Windows computer. The issues arrises when they try to save from a application - they cannot access folder3 but are only given the option of choose the root //server share and are forced to manually navigate back into folder3 until they are able to save.
  13. Hi All, I am looking for a solution on automatically creating a link directly to our users active directory home folder so that they are easily able to save their documents from applications. At this time we have a 10.6.7 server using Workgroup manager and our clients are 10.7 - we have the clients set up to save locally (a request of the departments due to the size of the files they use) with their AD home drives mapping on the dock. Our Home drives are structured like: //Server/Year/Studentname If you try to save through any applications you are unable to access the Studentname folder directly and are forced to navigate from //server which is impossible as we have over 150 accounts per folder. Is there some way to make the full home directly mount as a drive so that it can be easily saved to? Almost an exact replicate of how the dock shortcut works but able to be quickly accessed through all applications? I am by far not very clued up on Macs and despite a tenacious effort on googling this problem, I cannot find any answer. I have found a post that looked promising but quickly went into a 50+ page discussion on scripts which went straight over my head. Can this be done?
