Does the user accounting show anything?

We put our macs on static IP's reserved in DHCP. That fixed a fair few odd occurances. It means they always have the right DNS entry, they don't seem to update that correctly if on dynamic DHCP. Rob

Look at the jobs and check they are in a paper format the printer can handle. In my old role we would get jobs sent as A5 and the MFD would discard the job. Check the device logs and see if the job has been logged and if there is any detail on that. I did however see a number of instances where the job just dissapeared with no trace, the job left PCounter but the MFD ( Toshitba ) did not log any interaction at all! Rob

My old desk had on avarage 5 laptops stacked up, tapes, a couple of network devices, door cards, diblert cuttings, ram, pvdms, lan cables, knife, spare cat 5 plugs, 3 IP Phones , dead lcd panels, pads, postits, scraps of paper , broken cables, and my keyboard , mouse, PC and 2 monitors. My new desk starts and ends the day with a keybaord, phone, 2 mice ( mine and a random work one ) and 2 monitors. I prefer the latter! Rob

Certainly in the school I was at it was an issue, but not one that people got overly stressed byif itwas off for a few hours... e-mail would still be delivered, most lessons continue as normal, etc. In my new job its one of our core functions that it works. Rob

Indeed. SLA's are fairly hot unless you have been cheap. I think in 5 1/2 years there was 2 outages. one caused by the router engineer forgeting to save the config and a power cut rebooting it. ( solved in 3hrs, 2hrs of which were out of normal school hours ). The other whilst a 3rd party contracter was trying to clear ducts to install our new phone lines, they Rodded through our fiber, that took about 7 hrs to fix and was mostly out of hrs and we got claw backs from the SLA. ADSL, but we are close to the exchange so get ~17-18Mb but if it's for emergency access then standard 2-4Mb ADSL would probably do the job. if you want to maintain incomming mail (assuming you host your own mail server) then get a service with a static IP and set a Second MX record up. Rob

Yes it can be done on the cheap. We used 5 old G5 as a test environment and they worked fine. find a solution to back up your VDISK regularly to other storage. ( ghetoVCB for vmware is gr8 ) Citrix Xen is free and fully featured. vMware ESX is free but has no HA/clustering Rob

That's Funkey! We used 2950's III in production for a 3 way esx cluster and were super machines. They remain in in service as ESXi and XEN Hosts

Ok Cisco I can handle. 4000 became 4500 and are in 3,6,7,10 slot configs.. And Theres the 6500 Serise... Nice and simple.. ( Ok You have to now your Supervisors but it's straight forward.. ) Anyone give me a brife rundown on the HP's I see 4108's 5308's and modern 5608's I am going to buy possibly a 5308 and an edge switch ( more fun trying to work them out! ) to familiarise myself with the ODD world of HP. Many people use 3rd Party extended warranty providers past the initial carepack period. This is where folke are going to become unstuck on firmware if the provider is not approved. Rob
