  1. Ok got it working problem was with me not reading carefully enough
  2. Just thought i'd drag this thread up again as I'm having issues with this. I can't get the shared resources to work. We have just got a load of new promethean boards and I really don't want to fork out the network install when i've just paid loads of money for a site licence. Version 3.7 was shipped with the boards we have and the rest of the procedure above works fine. I've set the property for the shared resources but it does not pick it up. I get no error from the group policy deployment but when i open the settings of activstudio the shared resources are pointing to the All Users document folder not the UNC path I specified. Do you know of any other fix I can use maybe copying the settings file post install to set some global settings
  3. I don't have much experience with these but you may need a /ga switch in there to make it a machine added printer. i would also put them the other way round i.e. add printer then set as default
  4. If i was going to redo mine it would be mythubuntu. I had it as a dual boot and was almost tempted to switch permanently. In fact I might just switch over when i get home The graphical interface is probably on a par with vista's media centre and as i haven't seen windows 7 yet I wouldn't imagine it's a great departure. However with myth tv it's much more expandable to cater for any add-on you can think of.
  5. Maybe block them saving or running the install file with a file screen, however i've not had much experience with single files. I have a block on all exe files but its doesn't appear to be instant. It will delete any unwanted files overnight though. It appears to install in the users appdata directory so I don't think there is any other way to block because everyone has write access to their own profile folders
  6. The keys should be able to be setup for the different roles i.e. teacher and admin using the registry but i've not been able to get it to work yet
  7. We have it set up here in two room and i'm looking at putting it in a third. Still experimenting with admin keys so that each teacher can only see the computers in his/her room but I can see all of them. If you would like any help I can share my limited knowledge
  8. I've had this email forwarded to me today that seems to come from Capita. However a couple of things set those little alarm bells off in my head and I think this could be a spoof. I've put a copy below and underline the things that alerted me. After looking on the official website it could be genuine but I would like some reassurance. -----Original Message----- From: "Allison, Liam (CCS)" , Sent: 2009-03-27 09:09 To: Subject: Capita Education Services, Contact Information Dear I would like to introduce myself as the person responsible for supplying Quotations on hardware & software, for Capita education services Capita have recently purchased are main hardware supplier, therefore, we can now offer much lower prices on hardware and software, including PC's, servers, electronic whiteboards, laptops and general office equipment such as fax machines and printers. 9. Just got ours here at cromer. Can't see much difference myself but a speed test showed 25 so we are a bit quicker.
  10. You can use psshutdown to log off the console user (part of the sysinternals pstools package) psshutdown -o \\computername although i've found that this won't work if they have locked the machine
  11. I created a script to do this but don't really know if it works 'Log on script to detect italc and install if needed option explicit dim objShell, objFSO dim strItalc, strSettings, strPath strPath = """C:\Program Files\Italc""" strItalc = "\\server\share\italc" strSettings = "\\server\share\italc\installsettings.xml" set objshell = Wscript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") set objFSO = Wscript.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") if objFSO.FolderExists(strpath) then wscript.Quit Else objShell.Run(strItalc & " " & strSettings) End If set objShell = nothing set objFSO = nothing Wscript.Quit You will need to install on one client to get the installsetting.xml file but after that with this script in startup it should install on the others
  12. me as well I'm not sure if i can get them to use anything chemically for cleaning (Health and Safety gone mad, maybe) but the printer thing would be fine probably.
  13. I've managed to catch two individuals who felt it necessary to swap/steal keys from a keyboard. Following the deputy heads advice I have decided to give them both community service style punishments by doing tasks in the computer rooms (supervised by myself). This is where I got stuck. The first task seems to me to be obvious. I've given them both a map of the key locations on a keyboard and a checklist for each computer room. They simply need to check that the keys are in the correct order and that all connections are in the rear of the computers (network, mouse, keyboard, monitor). After this I'm lost so I'm calling on the wealth of edugeek information to help. Does anyone have any suggestions for something else for them to do for the rest of this week.
  14. I usually ask if they mind me going to fix a couple of things while they are there. I try not to leave them for too long though. always check to see how they are progressing every 15 mins or so.
  15. BBC - Newsbeat
  16. Not sure on the best way to accomplish this. You can download this: Download details: 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS and convert your word and excel to pdf. I think there is a 2003 version as well. There is a pdf combining tool here: PDFill PDF Editor with FREE PDF Writer, FREE Image Writer and FREE PDF Tools - www.PDFill.com It's probably going to be a fair bit of work though
  17. If you are using local profiles it could be that it is deleting the network profile when the user logs off. This could be a server setting (something in the security bit 'cache this many network logons' or something) or something on the local computer. Something i do with the staff laptops is open the advanced user accounts panel (Run... control userpasswords2) then you can add a domain account as if it is a local user. This should stop the settings being deleted.
  18. I use fog. It works and its free, what more do you need
  19. It's to do with the projector usually but a little info on the type of whiteboard would be useful.
  20. I've just tried to download but i'm getting the earlier version 176b not new one. Any ideas?
  21. We collected pictures of the staff in their younger years and are running a competition for the students to guess who they are. Might be a bit late for you to organise anything like that now though
  22. Interactive Whiteboards, ICT Solutions by Interactive Education Ltd They do battery operated ones now so no more plugging in to charge
  23. Auto Update gave me a 401 error but i downloaded manually, thanks
  24. Thank you for some really useful suggestions. I'll just take them all as a big list to the finance officer and let her deal with it lol. I'm sure I can get a short-list from here and the sims integration sounds like a good way to go and will be maybe a little more secure. Thanks again to everyone for your help.
