  1. We had this problem once, it was where monitoring software on clients would open and connect to the server to get the status of the printer, but wouldn't close again afterwards, instead everytime someone printed, it would open another instance, and keep opening them job, after job. Eventually the server stopped refusing connections. The easiest way to tell if you have too many connections (on the server) is to right click Computer --> Manage --> System Tools --> Shared Folders --> Sessions. This will list anyone connected to the server. Hope this helps!
  2. We are with E2BN, the internet speed is "up to" 2MB, we are a primary school with around 500 kids and about 75-100 workstations. Can't remember the exact price, but it was between £750 - £1000 (i think).
  3. I can recommend all of that equipment, we have just had it installed here! Try ADA, they are a HP preferred partner and did all the installation.
  4. We use class usernames with no passwords, but we want to change it just to fs as the foundation classnames are very long (ducklings, hedgehogs, willow).
  5. I need a holiday. I haven't had one for nearly 5 years!!
  6. How do I do this?? (I don't know much about SIMS). The Office Manager uses the launcher (not sure why!!). If I was to re-install the workstation that runs the launcher fine now, and called it the same name, would it continue to work? (sorry if that is a dumb question!)
  7. Ok, trying to get into the SIMS launcher module and I keep getting this message: "This Workstation has no ID, Launcher cannot continue. Please consult your system manager." No idea what to do!! Never used the launcher module before! How do I give the workstation an ID? or is there a way around this??
  8. 500 pupils ~150 staff in our primary school and we got £30k this year (mine you previously we only get £21k) I would say that your budget is low!
  9. very tempted to get this and give it to a teacher who keeps moaning about her brand new laptop!! Can imagine the face they would have when I give them the option: it's this *brand new laptop* or this *RM Nimbus*!!
  10. Loading takes about 5-20 seconds (pupil accounts), staff take longer (up to 3 minutes). The applying your personal settings box, only flashes up briefly on pupil accounts (not long enough to read what it says). With staff it can stay for up to 20 seconds.
  11. We don't image here, but are looking into buying some software for it. We do reinstall laptops/computers roughly every term and it is getting a bit too much.
  12. Very odd problem - I can send e-mails to anyone on our school domain (stmatthews.primaryluton.co.uk) but I can't send them to anyone else (e.g. a yahoo address, LEA address). Receiving them is fine. We don't manage the server it is part of our learning platform (but they do let us use Outlook) I think it is a problem with outlook as I get the following message instantly when trying to send e-mails: "Your message did not reach some or all of the intented recipients. Subject: Sent: 18/06/2009 15:20 The following recipient(s) could not be reached: on 18/06/2009 15:20 550 ...Local users only accepted." Has anyone got any ideas? I can send the e-mails if I use the webmail.
  13. Not entirely sure if this is what you want, but I would have a look at RISO.
  14. A version for mobile devices/lower-powered devices (PDA's etc...) Ability to search locations on a local network (e.g. get it to search a shared area), also you will need to put users into groups to stop pupils searching the staff shared area. Different colours/themes for users to choose from Option to remove the remember me box, schools using single logins for pupils (e.g. Primary Schools often have class logins), if pupils tell it to remember the password, this could cause problems Allow users to select the search engines to use Other than that it is a really good search engine - reminds me a bit of Profusion, which allowed users to search about 10 search engines at the same time!!
  15. I am trying to set-up a blank SIMS server, but when I go to run SIMSINST.exe it gets to the SIMSDB install, brings up the window to attach a new SIMS database, but then can't continue. If I try to move on I get a message saying: Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. Could not find the file 'W:\simsroot\sims\setups\newsimsdatabase.mdf'. I have checked on the current working server and this file is missing. I have also looked on SupportNet and can't find this file. Can anyone send me this file?? Thanks!
  16. Unless you are forcing them to use the home access, it is their choice to access it from home. For example, If a school is providing a bus service for free which will collect staff, but a member of staff chooses to drive to school then they can't claim petrol. You have provided yet another means of access to a school system, use of it through that access method is up to them. We had something similar, teachers thinking they could claim consumable costs for their ink at home, because we have restrictions here. The school provides printers, they choose not to use them. They can come to us if they have a big job to be printed.
  17. We have just started using SIMS for registration in the classrooms, and one of the issues is how we now do the firedrills. How do other people get around this?? Do you print off paper registers? Capita have suggested that we buy a laptop and copy the server stuff onto it - what is the practicality of this??? Any other ideas, or anyone with experience of these solutions?
  18. From what I have heard it is a really good car. Top Gear Magazine recommend the 1.6 HDi model. Alternatives are: Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Volkswagen Golf or Toyota Corolla.
  19. Have a look at teachers2parents. It is web-based, so people can access it at home. Out of all of the options I have seen it works out cheaper. We are giving it a 1 month trial here at the moment and it is absolutely fantastic!
  20. We have a few hard of hearing children in school and the powers that be want me to look for a Voice Amplification system for the classroom. Have found the Soundfields Front Row to Go system which looks like just the thing, but can't find a cost at the minute. Has anyone got any experience of this system? Any other recommendations? I did think about some sort of wireless headset for the teacher to wear connected to their laptop (which is permanently connected to the SMART Boards whilst teaching). Ideally it needs to be portable so it can go from classroom to classroom when needed. One feature I do like about the Front Row to Go is the battery, so if the power dies the lesson doesn't have to be completely interrupted.
  21. Bluetooth is the way to go, you can get a max of 100m from a bluetooth device, and most standard devices go for 10m. I have a bluetooth headset for my office phone at school which will give a range of 30m (It's a VMX Office if anyone's interested). Not sure what the limited of Radio are, but that will give more interference if you have a wireless network.
  22. Off topic, but has this laptop got a loud fan? I was considering getting one until a few reviews said that they sound similar to a hair dryer. I would guess that the gigabit driver doesn't work with XP. also, check the cable we have a few cables here that will only work at 100MB and not gigabit
  23. Running a cable would probably be better, from what I have heard from friends these never live up to expectations! Also, your electric cabling must be fairly new.
  24. Yesterday we lost the power to our server room, since then our SIMS/FMS server will not allow anyone to use either program. The original problem was: Whenever anyone tried to log into FMS the software would allow them to type their username and password but when they clicked on OK the FMS screen would jump up and then disappear again. We logged a support call with Capita and they remoted in and did a few things, but didn't fix the problem. Now no database on the server (we have SIMS, 5 FMS's and Vericool) can be opened, it just always gets flagged as suspect. Anyone got any ideas?? All the databases except FMS were working before capita remoted in! Would the easiest thing be to restore the databases to the nearest working backup (wednesday)? EDIT: Just found out that the only databases being flagged as suspect are SIMS, Vericool and our FMS Infant database
