  1. Cheers. I'll give that a go over Easter.
  2. Just looking at some KMS options. I would assume that if I've installed Windows from the volume licencing site and the OS version is listed as KMS Client version then I don't need a Key, they connect to my KMS sever and away I go (licence count limit permitting) I've got some machines from my PC supplier which are listed as "Description: Windows Operating System - Windows® 7, VOLUME_MAK channel" which are all activated. Is it possible to get these to use my KMS server? i.e. I need to get my activation count so that the KMS server will start activating machines. Can I use the Win7 KMS key that I have and just stick it in. Can I blank out, what I assume is a MAK key, so there is no key and it will try and use my KMS server? Am I totally stuffed as it would need a Volume_KMS version of the OS to start with?
  3. If I set that when I go through the wizzard (for testing purposes) it leaves the UILanguage box blank. I can then choose (EnglishUS if I want)
  4. Just a quicky, I'm just trying to get MDT working and I've got an odd issue. I've set up a PC how I want it with some software on (i.e. those I can't silent install/Group Policy) and then captured that image back to my deployment server. Added the image and then dropped it back out to a PC. All fine. However when running though the installation process from from the boot image, on the "Language and other preferences" screen I can only select "English (US) as my "Language to install". I can set UK for the Time and currency and the keyboard layout but the top box only gives me the choice of US. Interestingly when I log in to the deployed machine all the options seem to be in English UK and I can't see US referenced anywhere. Is the fault going to lie with my master image or something else? Edit: Having just double checked the deployment I would have done initially my choice of UI language at the start was just "English" (and ONLY English available), Date and time and keyboard could be set to English UK.
  5. Cool. Thanks for the responses. Kind of what I thought. I'll go for the software on the exams officer's PC and the files saved on the network (as they currently are) Once I've got it all running I'll stick it on another as an emergency fall back.
  6. I've just been looking at the A2C software now we've been authorised to use it and I'm wondering how everyone else is setting it up. Overall I like the idea that I can roll it onto the network so that multiple people can run the software (i.e. so that you don't have to get the super secret keys to the exam officers office on exam download day because she is off sick and the old EDI software only works on 1 machine for 1 user! ) However the software seems to imply that you set it up and leave it running, so are people going for server installs of the software? Or are they setting you setting it up on the users PC and they just run it when they need to transfer files. Even though I would stage all the inbox/outbox directories on a server the second option seems the most sensible.
  7. Rah! Finally found someone with login details and it would seem that I can install it after copying the files. (It prompts for the data files after I log in) Cheers for the suggestion.
  8. 1.16.10 But I might have done you a slight dis-service. Once I remembered you need to run the workstation setup i have been able to get it to run on a test machine using coppied files. Whilst I can get to the log in screen (better than before) I can't log in yet as I need to track down someone with a username and password. Of slight concern is that it hasn't asked me where the data is. We seem to have an Earnie32Data folder in a sperate location on the server and I don't know if it's looking at that for the data... I need to try logginh in first.
  9. Not sure if I can copy it off either, tried that.
  10. Some googline seems to point to errors with the dll's in the VB??? at least that's what people with the same error code have. Something's using an SQL instance but I'm not sure if that's Earnie or something else... I hate oblsolete software we "have" to have access to.
  11. About 3-4 years ago we ditched SIMS for our financial DB and moved on. The issues is that on the rare occasion someone needs to access old financial data. This hadn't been a problem as I still had the old server (6+ years old). However I am now trying to get rid of the thing for a number of reasons including the fact that I am removing the domain it is a domain controlller for. So my bright idea was to virtualise it, which I have done, and yep you guessed it everything works apart from Earnie32 which comes up with an error: Error in General.bas:: Sub MainEntry: Error 2147024770 - Automation error. The specified module could not be found. The software still works OK on the actual server! I'm assuming it's something to do with the virtualisation, but I've posted it here as an MIS/Earnie32 error. Can anyone suggest anything?
  12. Because I hate myself THAT much Cheers. Whilst I thought that was the case something nagging in the back of my mind felt that someone had said it was "Office Upgrades".
  13. I've been there and done that. My offical response from capita is to uninstall the agent and re-install it. At which point it will sort the reporting issue. (yes I know that's at best teniously unhelpfull) I wait to see what happens with the next upgrade to spring.
  14. No, I know all that. What I was asking about is the licencing model for Office. The OS you have to have a licence for the PC at some point you can then upgrade, thus if I want 10 more PC's in school I have to buy 10 x Win7 home premium and upgrade. The CAL's you just get for free (ish within the confines of the package you have purchased), as many as you need. I was just double checking how Office worked whether it was like the OS or the CAL's. As I said I thouhgt I was told it was upgrades for Office, but actually reading the MS website it seems to say that I can have as many copies of Office as I want (i.e. like the CAL's) which would mean all licences and upgrades are free.
  15. Hi, Just some clarification really. With an EES agreement does that mean that: 1: I can install Office as much as I want on all my PC? or 2: does it work like the OS where I have to at some point have purchased and Office licence for a PC (whatever version) and I can upgrade it as much as I want. I thought I was told the latter, however the MS website seems to say the former and that would mean that I if I expand my number of PC's I can install office at no cost (i.e. wothout buying a licence) Cheers
  16. thats where im getting confused i think. i'd best go install a few more copies to check its working.
  17. @Edu-IT. I'm not trying to manually activate. I'm trying to put in the KMS key into Office so that it know's I'm tyring to activate via KMS and willl then go looking for my KMS host. Just double checking the server, I notice a change in status, wich raises the question of, am i confused? If I'm using KMS do I need to specfy a licence key in Office itself or not? Will it automatically find my KMS host and try and activate?
  18. Don't think so. Everything matches up from what I've got from the licencing site. The key is (should) be for the version I'm downloading. I don't seem to see Office Enterprise 2010?
  19. Im currently trying to get KMS working for Office 2010. I've got the server set up dowloaded the KMS host setup and it says it's installed and licenced. I've also remembererd to enable the KMS service through the server's firewall. So I come to a machine that I've got Office 2010 installed on and put in my KMS key. I've downloaded Office from my licencing site, (Office 2010 ProPlus with SP1) the clicked on the key link to get my key and entered it and Office tells me that he key is "Not a Valid Office Product Key". Now this is the same key I've used to activate my KMS host (The KMS host is even giving me the last 5 digits of the key). I've checked for typo's, copy and pasted the key and so an and still the client PC is having none of it. I've checked the edition and it says it's a KMS volume client edition. I know it can't activate until I've made 5 activations to the KMS host but it still should accept the key so it can try and activate. So what can I do?
  20. Cheers. Off to try that now.
  21. I've got a 7 year old server that I need to image up as it's got our old financial database in. Not it's only needed on the rare occasions were they need to refer back to the 4 year old data but I do kind of need to keep it. So I thought it would be great to use VMWare's converter and player to knock it up as a spare machine. Excellent , and was all going swimmingly until I try and run version 5 on the machine and it tells me it needs XP or greater So.. any suggestions how I can image it up? I really need to drop the server (sepecially before it falls over) and installing the old financial software somewhere else is somewhat impractical.
  22. Slight update, I seem to have gotten rid of a lot of the McAfee based logging but I still have far too many incidents of the second example to be fully usefull for what I want. EDIT: Then again maybe not. Grr...
  23. I've been having some strange issues with stuff going missing from my network drives. Suspecting that it might be down to someone leaving computers unlocked or a student knowing a staff members password I need to log all the file deletion's on the network drives. Setting the logging up, done. Advanced Auditiong options, enabling auditing for certain groups on the folders all sorted and working (I can see it happening). The problem is that Windows seems to be logging a huge amount of other information that's filling the security log and making it hard to spot the events I want and impossible to look back more than about an hour. (See Examples below). I can't see obviously where I am auditing this but I could do with it stopping as I'd like, for the minute, just to be logging the file deletions. Any advice? An attempt was made to access an object. See how that goes but I'm still open to sugestions.
  24. I'm trying to figure out how to make my Dell UPS work on my vSphere5 installation and my lack of complete understanding is something of an issue (not using vCentre). First the instruction seem to point me towards installing vMA as another guest OS does that do more than just allow me to run the install script (which I can do from my machine with the power cli. Second what do install. According to the installation notes the file I need to run is ulnm-linuxx.x.xxx.x86_64.rpm However when I've downloaded the latest version and browsed to the files it's left it in a folder called AMD64 (as opposed to an i386 folder where there are other files). As I'm a bit nervious and not that confident it's left me a bit unsure how to proceed. Any advice would be apprciated.
