So our students can access their E-mail from outside via the Web. Easy enough no problem. However there is the flexibility to make it much easier by allowing them IMAP access and direct Blackberry access (BES/BIS server built in). Does anyone else do this? I'm just thinking about the posibilities for misuse even though I've got it configured so that the sender E-mail address must match the authentication credentials and you must authenticate to send mail. I'm just being cautious as I don't want any situations where a pupils sends a message "from" the Head or similar. What do you do, any pitfalls I should be extra careful of?

So I'm sure the subject makes it sound like I've been drinking too much but far from it it's about the School Level Annual School Census. Apparently this year they are accemting XML files direct from our MIS. But I can't see an option to do this. Is this coming soon (I've not got the Autumn release installed by the way)? Is it somewhere hidden that I've missed? I've got a lovely E-mail about, and I've found the functionality to do the ISC as ASCIS (Or PLASC) returns but not SLASC...

On the sims serve in the setups folder is a file called "SimsPerm.bat" you can look at it see what security settings you need configured and then sset those via GP. I have a feeling that you also need access to c:\windows\sim.ini as well. But once it's all set up in GP you can forget about it. I have and everything (almost) always works fine with hidden C: drives.

I was wondering if anyone has, or knows of, any free testing software (installable or online) that goes through basic ICT tecnician style questions. So smiple AD, Networking, PC trouble shooting, that sort of thing?

I've got to set a practice test up and I was looking to use the practice tests I already have for the exams 70-640, 70-642, 70-646. However I wanted to pick specific subject areas from each exam into a single test. Is there a way to do this. When I run the software I can only run each exam as a seperate entity though I can pick the sections I want from each exam I can't combine these accross a single exam. Any ideas?

Yep. Just bought ours.... Head count is an issue, especially as I had to count the housekeepers who only use the PC to e-mail damages in the boarding houses to our manitenance manager (might not have been specific about the breakdown to the Bursar, "It costs X boss, but saves us Y".) I did have a long chat with some of the licencing teams about who and what is covered and what I can and can't do and overall for our organisation it should save us money in the long run and that's based on what we use. It doens't include the extra stuff we didn't use that I can now use for "free" because of the licencing scheme. Now I just need to work out how to use WDS and MDT, and my Sharepoint book, and SCCM... Oh god what have I let myself in for...

Hi there, We currently have Sibelius 6 registered using a licence server. However the server has failed and will take a couple of days to repair. This unfortunately prevents us using sibelius as it cant contact the licence server. Is there a way to alter the registration so that it stops looking at the registeration server and registers as if it was a standalone version.? And how do I change it back when I get the licence server back on line?

Over the years I've adapted the file security of the files on my network. As part of a general tidy up I really need to audit what I've done and make sure it's all standardised. Is there a way to report back on each folder on a drive and the security permissions assigned to that folder?

If you go to Reports ==> Student lists ==> General student list you get a list of all the pupils in the school. There is a filter tick box to filter the list in all sorts of interesting way (students who are free at certain periods is quite good). You can also use the class list. to get similar lists. With either list you can then use the drop downs and items on the right of the page to drag different data items onto your list and have them displayed. It's a very good way of getting inforamtion quickly out of SIMS. Might be worth a look (I only found out about the ability to drag the items accross last week, it's cool!)

I was wondering how people go about recording the work students have to do in detention. Each student is assigned an individual piece of work specified by the teacher putting the student in detention. I want to be able to record it then run a report to generate the student's name and the work they have to do to be handed out before the detention. This basically means Capita's generic "Homework, Other work" linked activities are useless. Now the way I've worked out is when the behaviour incident is created you add a new "Note/Document" at the bottom and just fill in the Summary with "Detention Work" and the note with exactly what work I want completed. I can run a report to generate the information. However adding it here seems to be the most "faffy" part and I wondered if there was a better way. I don't want the staff members to have to type out students names in anything, I need the work to mach to each student and I need to be able to run a report on it. How do other people handle this?

Yeah.. I was struggling to see a way to do it. Shame I thouhgt it was a bit of a different way of presenting data.

Depends on how much automation you want. Bassically you would highlight the whole selection of data, Sort on Reg, Surname, forname. Then go to the data tab, use "Subtotal" (towards the right end) Put in a count at each change in year group and tick the page break between each change. Job done. If you struggle a bit like me you can record a macro to do this then edit it a bit to clear it up.

I can't remember what's in schoolcomms but isn't there a box for the parents and a box for the school members related to the student (though I'm suggesting this from memory which is always a danger)

The short answer would be to tell them to copy and paste the list of address into Outlook. I believe InTouch would do it fine and probably SchoolComms but both of these require a purchase. I had a quick look at unsing Macro's in Excel to pass the list to Outlook. It didn't work in the quick method I tried but I didn't put much effort in. It would need a bit more research. Just found this if it's any use... I'd start thinking along the lines of Sims Report to ==> Excel Sheet. Custom template to copy the data from the output to your master mail sheet. Then a box to type the message and a big "Go" button to send the mail.

So at some point when I was being heavy handed I've disabled desktop shortcuts to files. Now I want to turn it back on. The issues is that I can't find where I've done it. When A user creates a shortcut on the dekstop to a file it creates fine then when the user double clicks on it it says that it cant do that due to security restrictions. However I can create a shortcut to the folder when the file is, this opens fine and then the user can double click on the file and it runs (i.e. no file security issues). So any ideas how I've managed to disable shortcut links to files but not folders? (Oh and I've not checked to see if it's just from the desktop where this issues occurs).

I agree. I don't feel people should be restricted, the government should help out with the first child and a percentage to the second, but any more it should be up to the parents to afford the costs. Dwindling resources on the planet and general overpopulation means we should consider the rate of population growth. I don't feel that we should go as far as china's one child policy, but I feel that of you want a big family you should be able to afford it. Additionally I'd quite like to see a way where you can't spend benefit money on cig's and alcohol. If you are that desperate for money, why are you buying luxaries?

I had that. The problem is that if you use FSRM to block access tI desktop.ini to then can't have it email to every time a file violation occurs when students try and create bat files on the network as it email to every time the system tries to edit desktop.ini I am just in the process of testing a modified folder structure. All my users documents will be saved in a folder \\servername\users\username\documents. This will then let me put more folders under \\servername\users\username\ such as favourites, and redirect them and store them in one place. It then won't matter if windows renames the documents folder.

So I do need to change the Server Product key.... I found another topic on here very similar. It helped a bit but I'm still a but confused. Assuming that I change my Server key to a KMS one that will then activate with MS and set the KMS functionality running. As I haven't got 5 2008 servers at the minute is that going to cauase problems activating the server it's installed on? I would assume the server I set the key on would work it just wouldn't process any requests for new activations. I love how MS have done this to "protect end users from the dangers of unlicnced software" (I've been watching video's on MS website)

I'm just trying to get my head round setting up a KMS Server to allow me to activate Win7 and Office 2010. Whilst the Office bit looks reasonably straight forward (as I've found to insallter on MS website) the Win 7 bit and the initial set up confuses me a little. My server in Win2k8 R2 and is registered with it's own MAK key. A lot of the instructions go on about installing the server with a KMS key (which I don't have) but I do have to do that? I wasn't looking to activate my servers via the KMS server at this time. I do have a Win7 KMS key, do I just run slmgr.vbs /ipk with my Win 7 key, run the rest of the commands necessary to activate the host properly and that's in. When I hit 25 Win7 machine they all activate?
