  1. You need to look into the Sites and Services. I'm just planning this here to merge our Prep School's network into ours (VPN link over Leased lines). You need to avoid situations where PC's attempt to connect to logon servers on the other sites which should be exaclty what Sites and Services is for. [Edit] Which is exactly what @FN-GM said and I would have noticed if I'd read the thread properly. You also need to make sure that all your polices/security settings work fine at both sites.
  2. OK... Having just been messing around on my test server I'm managed to trick windows by increasing the size of my final volume to take up all the free space (windows automatically increases the size of the extended partition) and then reducing it back down to it's original size. Windows then leaves me with a chunk of free space in the extended partition to create some more logical drives. A reasonable solution? Or one destined to cause me problems? Any better suggestions?
  3. I've got a load of free space on my server and want to start using it. However I already have 3 primary and an extended partion created on the disk (and I don't want to be deleting and recreating stuff!) All disks are basic disks the server won't let me create a new volume as I have reached the maximim number, fair enough, but I don't seem to be able to add logical drives into the extended partition form the GUI nor can I see a way to extend the extended partition form the Server Manager GUI. I've had a quick look at DISKPART and I can't see a way to extend the ammount of space taken up by the extended partition. Is this the best way forward or am I missing something?
  4. Yeah! got my approval very late friday night! Boo! someone managed to muck up the order and my staff count is well out. I love it when you phone up people and they say "yes your order does say x and the conformation y, we'll juuuuust go and sort that for you"
  5. I used Promethean's own utility thing to fiddle with the MSI file (ASTransGen.exe) creates me a nice little licence file, and an ini file that maps the resources to a shared area. Then I deploy it no problems. I did have the same isuse with the serial driver but as I only have 2 serial boards is a minto issues to manually update them after a driver update. My biggest pain is that I have two deployments for the drivers, one for the 32Bit version and one for the 64, but not the end of the world.
  6. Cheers. I just wanted to know what sort of wait I was in for. Oh and I need to download some of the software.
  7. I've just digitally signed our agreement and it's currently waitIng approval from MS. How long dies this take usually? I signed it two days ago and I was wOndering is there a hold up I should be concerned about or does it take a week and I'm being impatient
  8. Despite me being nervous as this was my first time (adding disks to the array) it seems to have gone OK. Whacked the disks in, reconfigured the virtual disk to include the extra physical ones, wait 6 hours for the array to rebuld (even though not changing the RAID level) and refresh the storage in Server Manager and I now seem to have an extra "600"GB of storage. Will let it back up over night then I'm going to risk expanding a partition and adding some new drives to put stuff on.
  9. You see that's interesting. The actuall instructions give the impression that it's all do-able though the server config manager (in Windows) and that you can add to the size of a virtual disk without destroying it.
  10. Tools installed. And I need the disk space more than the redundancy... Just wondered if it's actually as easy as the help claims
  11. Ive got a win 2k8r2 Dell poweredge r710 server and I'm planning to add a couple of disks to it. Currently I've got a two drives in a raid1 array and a virtual disk and 4 in a raid 5 array making a second virtual disk. According to the help it's very easy to add disks in to the virtual disk (follow the "reconfigure" wizard) and presumably this will appear as free space on the disk that I can partition as I wish. So basically I want to know is it as easy as the help makes it sound? Will it all work fine with the server running or will it require a re-boot? Obviously here will be plenty of backups but I just thought I'd see if there were any pitfalls I should be carefully of.
  12. Anyone have any recomendations for a free networked PDF Printer? I've had a look at cute PDF but it needs installing on each PC, I just want one I can install on my server and farm out the way I do every other printer. Failing that any recomendations on the paid ones?
  13. Just found somethign like that on here and a couple fo threads on other sites basically saying you need to do some stuff that I expect also violates the ELUA. Not particulalry friendly... Still was worth a loooking at, even if I can't do it. Back to real work then.
  14. Just playing with ESXI server 5.0 and I notice that Mac's are listed on the list of guest OS's. If I get a copy of Snow Leopard is that going to let me install a MAC to play with on my PC based host or do I need to be running ESXi on apple branded hardware in the first place for it to work?
  15. I would have disabled locking for students from the get go!
  16. What are the legal requirements for transmitting pupil data? I am well aware about transmitting data between schools using S2S to maintain security which we do to send and reveice data. What I'm interested is what I need to do if the data is comming from our prep school to us (the senior school) from one MIS to another* where we are on seperate sites Do I have to go the whole hog and use 2S2 or can I send the data via password protected zip files? Or if that's not secure enough use secure flash drives when our admissions departments have their regular meetings. *Yes I know 2 MIS's is a bit silly but the single MIS concept is a good 2 years and a political minefield down the line!
  17. Wow, you guys make me feel better. I've got 1.25GB of space per student then two seperate areas for those doing Art (about 300GB in total) for them to save just their arty work.
  18. Just an update I've been doing some testing... It doesn't appear to be a case of the PC setting overiding the User. It actually seems to be a case of the preference settings higher up my OU structure being used rather than one's lower down (regardless of what the PC says). For example the monitor time out on the machine is set to 5 Min. The student time out is set to 10 minutes. The teachers is set to 120. the PC's are in their OU. All the students are in the seperate users OU with a GP assigned, the teachers are in a sub OU of the users OU with additional settings defined to alter my main policy for staff. When I log in as a teacher my monitor switches off after 10 minutes despite saying that it will go off after 120. Excellent.
  19. Yes well I thought that but I thouhgt that was only the case for policies not Preferences which are slightly different. Especially as when you actually look at the settings they say, monitor off after 120 minutes then the PC totally ignores them.
  20. I'm (attempting) to set the power options on my machine via GPP. I decided the simpliest way to do this was to modify the "balanced" power plan. So I've set the policy for the PC's so that the monitors switch off after 5 minutes (as well as a couple of other things, ticked the box to make it the active power plan and set it to Update. I then modifed the settings for the teachers (users) so that when they login it changes the timeout to 120 minuts (the dutration of a double lesson) and again set it to update the balanced plan and ticked the active power plan box. When I log in as a teacher the setting are corect if I view the power options, yet Win7 seems to totally ignore them and switch the monitors off after 5 minutes. Any Suggestions?
  21. Here's the lines I added to one of my start up scripts to copy a font onto the compuer copy "\\\\font\drago__r.ttf" "c:\windows\fonts" /y reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts" /v "Dragonwyck (True Type)" /t REG_SZ /d "drago__r.ttf" /f You need to register the font on the PC in order for it to be seen. Just copying it on doens't work. This can be achieved by and admin login on to each PC and opening the fints folder. This is obviously a pain in the bottom...
  22. Howdy, We use SIMS here (and are Indy too). I think it's great but I also put the time and effort into understanding and using the system to it's potential reather than fighting it because it's not pen and paper. Downsides for me to SIMS are, at the minute, reporting. It's good, powerfull, and easy (with a bit of training) but can be confusing for the novice when you are choosing what data you want it the report as you need to know which section it's in, though I guess this would be the same with any package. We also use WCBS for our finance as the Bursar decided he didn't like Capita's implimentation (though they have changed it since we made that decision a number of years ago). I'd say I spend more time on the phone to WCBS despite us using SIMS more extensively, I certainly put more updates on. Not sure who's support I prefer a it's easier to get through to a techncial expert with WCBS but the fact that I have to phone them more is a worry, plus if you get through to the right people at Capita they fill me with more confidence. Having seen both I think I prefer SIMS but I've not used the new finance or WCBS student info. Though that oppinion might be slightly tainted by the fact that I have used SIMS a lot. Our Director of studdies has come from a school that uses iSAMS and feels it's the best thing ever!! ™ and keeps making these references to looking at changing. Something I am dramatically opposed to for a number of reasons. Not because of any issues with iSAMS (which I have never used) but due to the cost and disruption and my personal belief that actually all systems, after prolonged use, are mostly the same. SIMS may be better in some areas than iSAMS but iSAMS will be better in other areas than SIMS. After prolonged use you know all the in's and outs and what you can and can't do you jsut get on with it.
  23. Hi there, It there a way to force IE9 to show the compatability view button for all sites? It seems to be something to do with the website as to whether it appears and it doesn't on content run from CD's that we have. Irritatingly the menu option to run the content in compatability view is also greyed out. I can't seem to find a way to force these local resources to run in compatability view without setting IE to run all sites in compatability view.
  24. I don't think it worked well with Win7 which was wy I went back to the deployed route. I was having and issue getting things to run smoothly with XP and 7 as everything I tried for one didn't work/mucked up the other.
  25. I was just deploying them. i.e. using the "deployed printers" settings rather than GPP.
