If I could set the default printer by PC GPP would be fantastic, it's looking a pain if I have to use item level targetting to deploy to the users. Not truely convinced by GPP.

I've found the problem is not locking it down, it's unlocking it afterwards. I've just re-build my GPO's for my prep school. I could have jsut given them the senior school one's and tweeked them to cover the couple of differences however it was usefull for a number of reasons. Whislt I copied most of the setting by going through it I found a couple of new things I hadn't spotted before. I also found the fix to a couple of items that I had in the past been struggling to resolve. I aslo found that by only putting in the things that were relevant it let me remove a lot of obsolete keys. I actually think the logon is much quicker even though the prep school networking is much worse. It might seem like a time consuming PITA but going through the whole thing youself is probably best in the long run. Especially as some things can no make sense without explanation. in my case you might wonnder why I have a security policy blocking executables from drive letters E and F. Unless you know that I'm also using USBDLM to force memry sticks to only use letters E and F this looks odd.

I'd be inclined to agree with Steve21 that Windows will be trying to redirect the users home folder to \\fs1\homes\Documents wich will give everyone the same home folder. Does that folder actually exist and if so what's the premissions on it? I would personally be expecting something like \\fs1\homes\%username%\Documents for that setting. Though I personally have the home area set in the users AD account then use the "redirect to users home area" option.

Cheers for the respones. In the end I gave up and stuck an IDE drive in and it worked fine. To answer some of the posts, I can't remember exactly what I did with the IDE mode but I had either changed it or the option didn't exist in the BIOS. Additionally I couldn't find the BIOS for that version motherboard. There possibly could have tried the chipset drivers but there certainly weren't any Mass srotage drivers but I would need to have loaded them into the setup (either standard (from the CD) or my PXE boot image) as the setup couldn't see the hard disk let alone Windows itself.

I've just trying to get it to deploy. Solus 118 went on fine on everything... APART FROM THE SERVER AGENT! Grr... For some reason the Server GUID in the database and the one on the agent config are different. Capita have sorted that and apparently we have successfully applied the Target discovery hotfix. Bad news is that I can't apply the Solus 3 119 hotfix or the summmer 4 release. It's been escallated to the developers and I'm sulking.

Hi all. I've got a random problem with a PC that's totally baffled me. The PC has a RC-410-M2 v2.1 motherboard. And has SATA disks connected. Some googling and I find it's made by a company called ECS. This is when I hit the first issues in that on there website they have a version 1 and a version 3 but nothing relating to 2.1. Moving on for the minute. The PC was working fine with windows XP. When I've come to Win7 the machine setup, either direct from the DVD or from WDS/MDT can't see the hard disk. I've been through the BIOS and can't see anything that would stop this. After a number of failed attempts (including trying differenet disks) I decided to improvise. I put the hard disk in an entirely different machine imaged it fine then put it back in the original box. The PC will get half way through showing the Windows Logo that appears during the boot then it crashes. Neither the V1 or V3 drivers contain anything like an additional mass storage driver which Win7 may be missing. And I didn't want to update the BIOS with any of the updates as they were for different revision boards. So now I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

Sorry, I thought you were saying that you could JUST set the default printer. That would install it again. Looks like it's time for some complicated preference settings...

I couldn't see the options to just set the default printer in GPP, just add then and then set the printer. My research on the internet seems to say that to set the defualt you need to deploy the printers to users (ad set the default) then use item level targetting to deploy specific printers only when a user logs in on a PC. Ie. if I want all users to in the ICT suite to see a printer the ICT printer I deploy it to the users but set item level targeting to look at PC's OU and if the PC is in the ICTSuite OU to run the item. Is that essentially what you are doing?

IS that through printer deployment via GPP thouhg or printer deployment vai the "delpoy wih group policy" route?

Firstly yes I saw the other thread but this is a slightly different question and I didn't want to go thread-jacking. I'm deploying printers through Group policy (so right click on printer in print management and "deploy printer with Group policy". And it works. My problem is how do I set the default printer? For example the staff room has a MFD in it, but I also want to print to the MFD in reception as a fall back. However I don't want the printer in reception to be the default. I also don't want users to have to manually set the default themselves and I was trying to avoid using scripts. Any suggestions?

Hi there, I'm just setting up the deployment of the SMART product drivers/Softare V10 (There are resons why not 11, its something to deal with later) I've installed the deployment namagers, set up my deployment and created my MST file to deploy through Group Policy. Not tested yet but I assume it's OK, My issue is to do with adding the Software drivers SP1 patch. It's an MSP file and when I try and patch the MSI file I get a compatability error. This makes sense as the MSI file is the whole suite not just the Product drivers. So how do I get the patch to deploy without doing it manualy on all the PC? When I tried and admin install of the MSI file I have to see if I can get to inividual MSI files I get an error and it won't extract. Help

I am in the middle of promting a member server to a DC but I've been spooked by one of the screens. The DC is for a sperate physical site on a seperate subnet to my main network. I've set up AD sites and services and defiined the new site in AD with it's correct subnet. When I come to promote the member server I've installed the AD DS role and run dcpromo. It's found the AD, it's decided which site it wants to be in based on it's IP however I'm loking at the screen where i can configure additional options. Now I want it to be a DNS Server (which is fine) but I have the option to make it a Global Cataloge server as well. Now I thought you could onl have one GC in the domain. (there is one at the other site). However the blurb underneath says that you should have one for each site or universal credential caching enabled (which apparetly I havent) and I don't know what to do. Help

So a couple of questions regarding this product. Someone has suggested using it to share some of their files. Just ignoring any other issues for the moment is is possibly to set the sync folder to a network location. When I tried it dropbox told me I couldn't. Is there a way round that? (or hopefully not). Second. I've got a Smoothwall acting as an authenticating proxy on my Accademic network and routher and transparent proxy for my wireless network. After following smoothwall's KB it works on my accademic network, it works on my iphone on the wireless. Yet it won't work on two seperate machines also on the wireless. Says "Can't establish a secure connection". Local firewalls don't seem to be an issue. One's a MAC and one's a PC. Logging on the smoothwall doens't show it being blcoked as far as I can see so I'm kind of stumped Help.

Actually I've decided to have a session moving all the user areas. Bit of excel, bit of robocopy and I can move all the data into a drive:\users\username\documents folder fairly quicly and then Win7 can do what it wants.

In this instance it matters because this is going to be a PC I image up to go on all the PC's on site and they don't all have IWB's. One of my techies got carried away and installed the drivers. When I deploy the drivers to those PC's with IWB's then it will probably be a good idea. But for the suites then it's going to be a bit confusing if it's not standard Win7.

Looks very similar to what I am doing. I did have an odd problem however where it worked fine for Office apps but when it came to pinning SIMS to the start menu it pinned a new copy and ended up with 10+ copies of the SIMS shortcuts before I stopped it.

Sort of sorted. The login screen is back to normal however despite removing the tablet components I still to have little tick boxes next to every item every time I highlight thing in Explorer. How can I get rid of them

"Ding" Give the (wo)man a gold star. Yes there are smartboard drivers on it. (For reference it's a site I've just taken over and not used the smart boards before). So next question will removing the smart software revert it back to normal? I don't want the drivers on my master image anyway. Probably an error deligating that taks...

Odd problem, I instlled a Win7 PC from scratch exactly as I have done in the past. For some reason it seems to believe it's a tablet PC or a touch monitor even though neither of those things are the case. The most obvious problem is that when you attempt to log in it says "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Windows Security button" at the log in screen. How do I convince it otherwise and return to the "normal" login screen with just the "Press CTRL+Alt+Delete" text? Google tells me to look at the "tablet PC settings" in the control panel and hit the "buttons" tab follow a few more steps and I should be able to turn it off. However I don't seem to have a "buttons" tab.

Rob, Sorry for the delay. I've got all this set up with Chris' help so the modules are in place and it does work.. it just seems to be this networking issues. I've updated the image with the IP's on. As stated the firewall can ping a PC on the wireless network (172.17.x.x) but a PC can't ont the 172.16.X.X. The reverse is true where a PC on the 172.17.x.x. network can get out to the internet but can't see PC's on the main network (which is kind of what I want but I'm not convinced ive done it deliberately)

Howdy, Are there any issues or legalities when it comes to using dropbox or even Skydrive/Goolge's Equivilent? Particularly with things like data protection. I saw the post a while ago about Google's T's & C's but wondered if there was any other things I should be aware of? Our ICT director is pushing cloud learning which I'm not objecting to, I just like to know what isuses I need to make sure are considered what sort of stressess will be placed on the network.

When I worked out the costs for our organisation I worked out that it should save us about £7K every 4 years verses buying the licences for Office and Windows. I also smooth out our purchasing and don't have to hit the Bursar up every 4 years for some extra cash for an upgrade. Depending on your school the PR bonus for always being up to date should not be underestimated. We too went for the desktop package. The thing to remember is that it's not JUST Office and Windows. I'm looking forward to getting some big projects out the way and then looking at implimenting Lync, Sharepoint and SCCM that we get the CAL's for as part of the licencing. Also the free years subscription to MSDN for one facilty (*cough* ICT *Cough*) that was thrown in with the first year was nothing to be sniffed at. Does that get "thrown in" every year? It also gives us the option of moving to exchange if we wish.

Hi there. I am in the process of setting up a seperate VLAN accross my smoothwall device but I've hit a problem on the networking side. Attached is a bief network diagram. I am adding in NetRange-B to my existing NetRange-A. From a usage point of view PC-B can get on the internet and is being filtered appropiately by the smoothie so is basically all working fine. PC-B's default gateway is the smoothie. PC-A's defualt gatweay is the firewall. There is a static route defined in the firewall so it knows that NetRange-B can be found by going to the smoothwall. However currently PC-A cannot talk to PC-B and vice versa. This is actually what I want however I am concerned that this is not happening by deliberate action but accidental incompetance as as far as I can tell they SHOULD be able to talk to each other. I would like to resolve the issue so I know what's going on. As stated PC-B gets on the internet, PC-A does as well. The firewall can Ping both PC-A AND PC-B. The smothie can ping both PC's as well. However running a ping from either PC (or trying to access them in any other way (i.e. file shares) fails. Running tracert commands on either PC just see's the trace fail as it bounced off the respective default gateway. Any suggestions where i am going wrong?

Yes I have to say Viglen did a good price for us... Interestingly I was told yesterday that on a 3 year deal you did change your FTE count every year. Though that wasn't from my current EES supplier, and to be honest I didn't press for details as I'm quite happy where I am. We to go for a 1 year deal.
