I'm trying to set up a new server and I've hit an issue with file shares. I've created the server with two partitions. I can create and access shares for folders on the C: drive no problems on the server and from another PC. I can create shares for folders on the E: drive and access them from the server (\\server\share). However every time I try and access a share on the e: drive from another PC it gives me an access denied message. I'm using a domain admin account and as far as I can see the share and folder permissions are all OK. So... why? help!

So thanks to @Steve21 that has worked fantastically for part 1 but I'm struggling with part 2. I've used the above commands to create a pure text file, but I need write another that creates a text file with some HTML in. So I'm trying th fit the line (for example) in one of the stream.writeline commands but it doesn't work. I know it's going horribly wrong becuase of the use of speach marks for starters but I was hoping someone had some advice on how to write this into a line on a text file.

@Steve21 I'm outputting to a text file, once I save the files in the correct location these are read by the mail server's web interface. That's probably enough to get me started and working. As I'll have everyone's job titles and details in a excel list it's the place I was looking to start from. It's a bit of a pet project so I'll give it a go when I get time, hopefully in the next week or so. @MatthewL Cheers for the suggestion but I'm not using Exchange.

I'm looking to take a list of staff and create their E-mail signatures (becuase they can't be trusted to do it themselves) and I'm looking for some ideas. The signature files are saved as 2 text files where just the variables such as phone number, name and job title would change. now I could create all this as a mail merge but I would need to save each file individually (which would be the issue). Alternatively if could output direct from excel into the text file this would be fine. But I'm at a bit of a loss about the best way to create the output. Is there a way to use the VB script to acomplish this task. If it makes more sense I would start with a list Person1 Job1 Phone1 Person2 Job2 Phone2 And export the text Person1 Job1 Phone1 To a file .txt

So it would seem I've broken a link between two buildings. Unfortunately I inherited one that was a copper link and when we recently re-cabled one end it now doesn't work. But here's where it gets complicated. My cable tester says the link passes and is connected (It's only a basic tester so I'm not getting much information but it believes all the connections are fine. The link lights on the switches come on at 1GB indicationg a connection yet is seems that no data is transmitting. Using a spare switch I connected them directly too each other and verified that they worked, I then went to the other end of the link, connected the same sockets and whilst it all looked good from a blinking lights point of view, no data was transmitted. The results of my cable test tell me that the cable is approx 135 metres long so whilst it is over the 100m maximum length it did work. Where should I be looking to get it to work? Looks to me like it's to di with the retermination and tidy up but is that plasuable given it passes test? Or are the tests not good enough?

I've an odd issue in DNS. in one of my reverse lookup zones there are some extries for some PC's that don't exist. The machines are gone and they don't have a forward lookup entry. When I delete them they just come back... why would this be?

I think I might have found the answer. It's early days but signs look good. Basically at Easter the local tech broke the firewall and it was updated and flshed with the latest firmware by netgear. It would seem the firewall defaults include a switched on and somewhat sensative LAN side UDP flood attack check. So I believe the firwall was detecting the usual DNS usage of a small school as an attack/virus and blocking connnections. Which explains why sometimes it was lightning quick and sometimes not as it depended on the number of connections attempts at any given moment. A bit of configuration later and it's less grumpy and the internet seems to be running as fast as it should.

Probably should add this server is the only DNS server on a site (SiteA). There is a VPN link between SiteA and SiteB and secondary DNS is located on SiteB. However I can't see how that's an issue when I'm running NSlookups against SiteA DNS Server. Additionally when testing I tried using only a single DNS server, the one at siteA when I was at siteA and it was still rubbish.

Netger Firewall SRX5308 along with the windows firewall. Default gateway is the firewall I can tracert the bbc homepage when DNS bothers to resolve an IP address. What I'd like to do in tracert the DNS request!

I've a problem that I can't seem to find a solution too. My setup: Windows 2k8R2 running DNS (AD/PrintServer) on VMWare ESXi 5.1 (dedicated NIC in host) DNS forwarders set up to point to ISP. Firewall on server and VMware has ports 53 open for TCP and UDP. Firewall also has ports 53 open for outbound traffic. Internal name resolution looks fine, responese when using NSLookup run fine. However when accessing external sites in IE (and firefox) it hangs then comes up with "page not displayed". NSlookups then time out. However it's not consistant, the name resolution is slow but sometimes works. Then seems to wake up and run super fast before I start getting pages not displayed. If I download a file I get the full bandwidth so I know it's not our internet overall. It lacks any form of consistnecy that would be usefull in determining the cause! but I'm running out of ideas. The setup prety much mirrors our other site which runs fine. The only differnece being the DNS servers are physical. To make matters more frustrating there is a seperate wireless network which runs seperately on a different VLAN and has it's own firewall and this is fine. Runs as quickly as I would expect. And advice would be appreciated..

Does anyone else find this a little ropey? Sometimes it doens't map printers in or they appear and vanish. Sometimes (or on some specfic printers) it doesn't pick up that there is a local printer and sets a network one as default. It just seem off and not as reliable as I'd want

Problem there is that I'm out of licences so can't run it on two PC's. It's a short term thing for convieience. Think I'm going to have to disapoint someone.

Anyone got an idea how I can open two copies of the program at once on one PC? It's proving resistant to that idea... (We are creating a new school and thus need copy info from the old school into the new, a lot easier if you can open 2 side by side. I can't use another PC as we are out of licences and this is not a long term thing).

yes, I've looked at Impero as has our Dept Head and whilst we want it and yes it looks good, we can't justify spending the money on it at the minute as there are a number of other ICT projects that require funding. Hopefully at some point though. I currently just use the standard windows shutdown from a scheduled task on the server. The main issues is over if people are using the PC when the shutdown command executes. Second I seem to actually need to run the command twice to get the PC's to shutdown if they are asleep. The first command wakes it up, the second shuts it down. This is doubly anoying for those people using the PC when it shutsdown. Hence I wondered what other options there were. I looked at the shutdownatron but it was the lack of notifications to Win7 users that was the issue.

I'm looign for some software to shut the machines down at a certain time. However more specifically I want something that will shut the machine down after x minutes of inactivity but only between certain hours and bring the machine out of sleep to do it (if the machine has gone to sleep becuase of other power saving policies). Any suggestions?

Using the Loopback applies user settings to a PC. So any User Policies will only affect users in that OU. Applying a loopback on the PC's will mean that all the PC's in that OU will receive the user settings you have specified regardless of which OU their user account is in. You may run into trouble, depending on what you are trying to achieve, if there are conflicting entries in a users GP and a PC's (loopback) GP.

I've a problem with a PC and it's struggling to pick up it's DHCP reservation. This a particular problem as I can't PXE boot it to image it. When I look at the DHCP reservations GUI there is no record of this PC's IP reservation or MAC address. When I try to create it I'm told I can't as it conflicts. I did have the IP address set manually in windows. When I try to PXE boot it fails with an error (which I don't think is relevant to the actuall problem) but then gives me the correct client IP. When I use Netsh to view the DHCP scope the reservation is there!!! So why is it there using Netsh but not in the GUI? Anyone got any advice or should i just risk it and use netsh command to remove the reservation?

Assuming that your "All stations" applies before the staff policy setting the value to "not Configured" means that the PC won't change the applied settings. So you background it set, nothing overrides it so it stays. You need to set the Staff policy to disabled if you want to change the settings. Personally I only allow admin staff to change their background. As there PC's are not seen by the pupils/public that's fine. Teaching staff have the same background as their PC's are visible. You don't want people/parents walking round and seeing a picture of a staff members cat's displayed on an projector. usinf FQDN rather than netbois name seems to help with that. I know a few people who use it and they say it's fine. I imagine plenty of referal servers helps
