So over Easter I'm moving servers and moving the install location for all my Group Policy installs. So is the best plan: remove the deployment in GP removing the software and re-install or Remove the deploymment in GP and do not uninstall but prevent new installs and re-install? This time round I've been sensible and the deoplyment point is a DFS share so I can move the files in teh future but keep the DFS root that GP sees the same. Suggestions?

you seem to be excluding older and newer files? Presumably you don't want to exclude the newer files because those are the one's you want to copy? It do some testing though as I've not used these options, YOu might also want to make the old area read only so that they can't save to it...

Technically I have 5 hosts, however... 2 are licenced through the Essentials package, one is at a seperate site (so I need a seperate physical host), one is the free version running as a test bed. The last is our Bursary server which we bought first so has a standard licence for ESXI but was never bought with vcenter server as we only had one host. I was just trying to get all my hosts in one place. It was worth a shot but given our setup the only benefit to me would be to re-licence the Bursary server as a exsi essentials host.

As we are a small installation I've got the Essentials plus kit for 3 hosts (2 processors per host) and vcenter server essentials. However can I connect more than 3 hosts to the VCenter server if those hosts are licenced seperately? (both technically and legally) For example I could connect 3 hosts licenced through the essentials plus, plus my test host (licenced with the free version) and the host I bought originally that is simply ESXi but has it's own standard licence. Thus making 5 hosts on Vcenter server in total

OK, ignore me got it. Needed to add a USB Device into the VM config, not USB hub.

This is sort of harware based but at the same time sort of virtual. I'm trying to configure a Dell UPS to connect to my ESXi host. I've got the ULNM installed on a vSphere Management Assistant machine but I can't get it to see the UPS. (Can't get the windows version to see it either) Now here's the real question, can it see a UPS that's plugged in via USB? Should it be able to and I've done something wrong or missed a step in the instructions. The UPS Hasn't got a network card in so I can't plug it into the network...

Cheers for the responses. I know its not the paring (transmit/receive) as I've tried swapping them round. And I'm using HP gbic's in HP kit. It's actual communication between the switches that's the issues. Having looked over the config the only option I have for the fibre on the HP switches is 1000Mb where as I know the Nortel switches only run at 100Mb so I'm leaning towards this suggestion. I wondered of there were any other ideas.

I'm just installing some new HP Provcurve kit. However I wasn't given enough money to replace all the current kit on sit so I'm trying to get it to communicate with some old Nortel 450 switches. When I link up the fibre connections between the Nortel and the HP GBIC modules there is no connection. However there is a connection down the fibre when the Nortel switches talk to each other and then the HP switches I have replaced talk to each other. Is it normal for differnet manufatures to not to work together? I've had some netgear switches working with the HP modules. Or is it the case that the HP modules will only run at 1Gb and the Nortel stuff has a maximum speed of 100 Mb? Interestingly I can't see any light transmitted by the nortel fibre modules, yet I can with the HP.

That all sounds really dodgy.. Our costs were the same when we renewed our costs were the same, in fact they went down becuase our FTE staff had dropped a little. I saw the price increase thing, but I also read that the price increase wasn't being applied to things like this licencing agreement.

I've an issues with my Meru Wireless and I was wondering if anyone had experienced anything like it and knew what was up. We also seem to have having some odd issues with students not having access and I'm wondering if there is any relation. I've 2 VLANs. A wireless VLAN and a second on for our main accademic network. The conttroller is into a port tagged on both VLANs, the AP's are not, they are on untagged ports on the main accademic VLAN. VLAN routing sees the wireless vlan go out through the proxy server to provide routing and transparent internet filtering. Each network has it's own DHCP Server. Rough Image below. Now when I connect a device to the wireless it seems to work, it get and IP address on the 172.17 range and all my tests work OK. However I am getting reservations in my Accademic IP address range for devices (172.16). But when I check a device it comes back correctly with an IP address for the wireless 172.17. I've had a chat with Meru this afternoon and they have suggested some things which haven't worked. Before I went back to them I though I'd ask if anyone else knew why this would happen.

I've got a KMS server running on Win2K8 R2 and it's running fine. I'm wanting to acctivate Office2013, Windows 8 and Server 2012 off it but was hoping for some clarification. I've found this, Update adds support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS hosts and I've installed it and the Office activation pack. Now my Office 2013 count is too low to activate but it seems OK. However for the Win8/2012, Do I need to add in a 2012 KMS Server key to my existing KMS server? or will it's current 2008R2 KMS key and the hotfix be enough to activate Win8/Server2012 (mostly the latter of those) I don't want to start adding 2012 servers then find I have an issue.

Hi there, the prep school I support have been having issues calibrating, and more importantly retaining the calibration settings on Win 7 machines. However it seems to work OK if the calibration is done by a user with admin rights to the PC. Does the board save the information somewhere a general user doens't have access to? (Unfortunalty I'm not at the site and don't have access to a smart board to do a lot of checking... ) Cheers.

We have just changed our E-mail address names and they are now different to the PC Domain names. When accessing our internal mail server it was fine because I could by pass the proxy, local DNS would then give it the local IP and away I went. Now it has to pick up the DNS from the internet, then go through the proxy bounce the traffic off the firewall (as it's got the external IP address) and it's just generally slowing up access to a local resource. Bearing in mind i have a fully functioning DNS setup for our original domain (DomainA) is there a way to add in information so that for our New domain (DomainB) with the local IP address? I realise that it's going to cause issues accessing anything under domainB and require some manual maintenance but as there are only 3 or 4 external IP's manually maintaining thise is not a horrible task? Basically, when on my local domain I'd like it to work out that webmail.domainB = local IP even though my existing DNS/Domain is DomainA

I'd also consider moving the users documents to "\\server\share\%username%\documents" or something. Win7 Likes to rename the documents folder "My documents" and it's pain when you go to \\server\share\ and see 400 odd "My Documents" folders with no idea who they belong to.

Yep, group policy preferences is your friend there, word templates, short cuts bouckgrounds ini files, .OfficeUI files anything you want.

Yep, Just set all the settings in one GPO. The only reason I have multiple GPO's on an OU is becuase I have some software that only needs to be deployed to a speficic group of PC's By setting the GPO on the root of my computers OU's and only applying it to a specific group the software is deployed to the correct PC's no matter what sub OU they are in.

Cheers... i think. I get the general idea. Alas it's actually on my public DNS of which I'm paying for a managed service so checking it is a pain. I have a feeling that they have set my new domain, domainC up to look at entires in my original domain rather than setting it up as a standalone domain which is a pain. My current guess is that there isn't a "mailserver.domainC" defined, the MX record for domainC is "mailserver.domainA" and the blackberry is looking for mailserver.domainC specifically. That however is a MASSIVE guess.

When I put an E-mail address in a blackberry what does it look for in DNS to get it's connection settings? I ask as I have 3 domains, if I set up a blackberry on DomainA or DomainB it works and connects. If I try DomainC nothing happens. Alas it is DomainC i need to use as the other two are being phased out. Now given that all three domains are pointing at the same server it's a tad anoying. I think I have an idea what's wrong but I was wondering if anyone could explain how the blackberry gets it's info.

I was just wondering if anyone had any good information/links about the issues involved in Staff forwading e-mails to their own private address. I know there are issues about data protection/pupil information and potential issues about staff and pupils e-mailing privately but I was wonding if there were some good example of the dangers and some links to specific legislation? Someone is not taking the fact that we are trying to protect the organisation and the staff well. It's not convieinet for him to log to two things (Work E-mail/Private Email) when he's not in school.

Sorry, I can find out how much bandwidth we are using. It's a question does the ammount sound excessive? or not? what sort of traffic amounts (approx) could we expect in our sort of situation?
