I had one pupils that repeatedly had invalid code then on the 4th of 5th time it worked. The other 16 worked ok. It's a shame there's no "test" button that tests connection to servers etc - that would be far too forward-thinking for an exam board.

You can't go wrong with something like Wharfedale Titan 12 passive PA speakers plugged into a budget PA amp (Crown / Behringer/ Sampson) and run off a small decent quality mixing Desk (Allen and Heath 8 or 12 input, or Behringer if the budget is really tight) use a bog standard HIFI CD player as the input. Bonus with a small mixing desk is you can bring other things in (PC/Microphones etc) too in the future. Wall mount the speakers wire it all in hey presto. If you literally have no clue then may be better to get an AV company in, but they usually just sell you whatever is highest on the profit margin so take it with a pinch of salt unless your getting multiple quotes etc.

Hi thanks for getting back! I did some googling and found a guy who was struggling using CMDLINE= on other software. Ended up using his mods which included some extra "" thrown in for good measure and it worked! Just installed it on 31 pcs. Used: msiexec /i "SecureClientInstaller.msi" CMDLINE="DEFAULT_INSTALL_DIR=""C:\Program Files\Surpass\SecureClient""" /qn No idea how or why but ... yes! Cheers

Hey I am following the secure client destructions and the command line they say in the help files ends up being for me: msiexec /i "P:\PACKAGES\WJEC Secure Client\SecureClientInstaller.msi" CMDLINE=/DEFAULT_INSTALL_DIR="C:\Program Files\Surpass\SecureClient" /qn But the "Default install dir" bit isnt working. I see you had to make a transform for it but it doesnt say anything about doing that in the help files? Any ideas, is my commandline wrong or do I need to do the orca transform thing too? Cheers

Really? I am a linux n00b but will look into that as we're downloading gigaquads of chrome and app updates and adobe is not much better but apparently, there is a way to cache that too. Cache training...er I mean youtube videos here we come!

Lol it was an example of the possible inflexibility of running standard licences. Frankly we need even more update caching here, google os updates, adobe creative cloud updates, 1500 devices - the need for update servers is greater than ever! So your an "install everything on the domain controller" to save money type huh? Most of the schools I've ever seen incur large amounts of downtime have had systems set up like that.

Yes but you include/absorb that extra cost as part of the server upgrade cost, and then you shouldn't have to buy any other server licenses so no nasty surprises to take to SLT when you want to create that WSUS server you thought you wouldn't need.

I never used to get charged for IWBs but have on the last 2 collections. I guess the rules on the toxic/magnetic stuff may have changed? I think it was 20 per board so not too excessive.

Sounds like it would be better to get one datacentre license as you can then create as many standard guests VMs as you wish as no extra cost.

Assuming your literally 10 meters from the mast you'll get a maximum of about 50Mb/s from 4g. 5g of course should be much more useful.

Ok so got it working and backed up 1.3TB last night in 3 hours - not bad! Only got 2TB storage so room for one full and some incrementals. It's not perfect but it's all I can afford, for now, (and much better than nothing!) maybe the ever-looming cybersecurity threat will eventually coax more money available.

Do you have guest wifi? If you have guest wifi and it is provided through a seperate VLAN and seperate broadband link with seperate filtering like we do (WIFI Spark) - any device on that becomnes out of scope from Cyber Essentials as it is not on your admin/curric network(s) anymore. Sharing physical cable and switch infrastructure is fine apparently.

Got an ideal networks meter - like a basic version of a fluke - does all I need and wasnt stupid thousands of quids either. Any advanced troubleshooting gets done by our cabling contractors with theyre 20 grand fluke.

Yes they're a total joke and fundamentally fail to understand 21st century technology. Stupid things like 20mb upload limit for video files for example.

XD is a Windows Store app, not a normal program - it could be something to do with that have you got GPOs with windows store blocked or something along those lines?

Yes 1:1 chromebooks here including staff and all the T&L done in google. It's working really well. Just be prepared to allocate at least 5% of overall cost towards for repairs/replacments as chromebooks will get accidentally dropped/damaged here and there. If you are not going down the leasing or accidental insurance road then keep a stock of spare screens, power adaptors, and spare chromebooks.

That's still gonna be an ouch big bill as whilst my IT services are all about as environmentally friendly as we can get, the same can't be said for lighting/heating/kettles/canteen/etc as it's an old school. We've got a 4kw solar array that was put in yonks ago and that roughly offsets the energy used by the server room so you could say my server room is carbon neutral .................... (just ignore the other 70 rooms)

People always overestimate how much power equipment uses. Just because it's got 2 x 1000w PSU doesnt mean it uses 2000w all day long. Probably less than 200w most of the time. For example, my server cabs are currently in the middle of the school day using 1.37kw accurately measured. That's 4 x Dell Servers, 1 x CCTV 1 x Mitel Phone 1 x huge 4u cisco router, 2 x aruba core switch and 1 x small cisco router and 1 x BT fibre interface. So that's 31.2kwh per day or £3.40 per day, £1252 per year at current prices for the entire lot. Don't get me wrong these energy price increases are going to make it more expensive to run your servers 24/7 and it's a good idea to virtualise and reduce the requirement for physical equipment but is it worth ripping out your entire system because of £1252 worth of electrciity costs? We're really talking minuscule figures for server rooms compared to a secondary school's entire site wide electricity usage.

Just in case the comp I still open - This PC would allow us start the creation of a cool youtube channel based around real-world use of educational tech (and other gaming manufacturing tech) and act as a platform to hopefully introduce Esports into mr local area.
