It's taken me a while to get around to thinking of the Vista/7 way of doing things, which has probably caused a few of the issues we've had (thankfully only minor niggles!). We still have a lot of XP machines so we'll be a mixed site for some time yet.

Same here, we're now running 2007. Initially it was 2003, I did the migration myself with no issues. I would recommend testing on a non-production box first as if you have an error during the install it can mean an O/S reinstall. I had this issue on the 2003 install. I do very little on a day to day basis other than creating accounts.

Not sure if my repsonse will make sense, or even helps your issue.... We had to have an input queue setup for one printer that then sends to an output queue (i.e. the printer itself) Pcounter support set this up for us, it made sense at the time, but having a 5 week old baby and little sleep I'd struggle to explain it now!

I'm planning on rebuilding our 2008 DC with 2008R2 over the summer. The hardware is fine as we already have other servers of the same spec running 2008 64bit and 2008R2. I'd be grateful if fellow Edugeekers could take a look at what it's running and see if there maybe any issues/gotcha's. My initial checks so far show that all software is okay on 64bit: Server is DC running DHCP, DNS, WINS, RID/PDC/infrastructure roles (secondary DC is on 2008R2 on Hyper-V on different physical box) Software Devizes room booking Backup Exec 2010 Spiceworks SQL 2008 Secureassess Powerchute Network Shutdown Broadcom suite Windows imaging server Superspell 2 database server

We've seen that on ours as well (2003) One minute there's a whole load of them the next nothing and then it builds back up. It's as if it clears itself out periodically rather than deletes the oldest ones.....

We have the odd issue here with new install PCs. Installing IE8 manually sometimes helps, or randomly it just suddenly works - this is for updates via WSUS though

If your terminal server is on a UPS then the pupils session will still be running. Though this is only useful for those short power cuts/blips. Currently we only have a few pupils who use a Word Processor, and they're supervised by our LSAs, what woul happen if this increases drastically I don't know. I know EG have already spoken to one of the top dogs about online exams, maybe we all need to keep badgering the boards/JCQ and they will eventually listen. having different software for different boards, with updates that can require a reinstall - last years WJEC (secureassess) being one - is not feasible long term......

Ah yes, get it now.. I read it as being apps were seriously hindered/unusable due to current HDD technology rather than just 'slowed' down

I can't say I can think of any apps that are limited by HDD off the top of my head! It's a bargain at £4,200!!

If I'm honest at 19 years old, in a supercar, I think I would have at some point been speeding..... Come to think of it at 19 years old in my mothers 1.0L Metro I probably was........

I've been laughing so much I've had to stop reading for a while to allow my eyes to dry!

We used to be two sites - upper and lower school. The link went via the local library and was 10 MB/s. DC, SIMS server, email and file server with for upper school pupils and all staff on upper school site, also had whole school shared drive on as well. There was a DC and file server (one box) for lower school users on lower school site. Never really had any issues, though file access was a little slower for staff on lower school site but nothing to cause any real headache! Originally two separate domains I moved all lower school PCs to be part of Upper School domain within a year of starting as NM!

Responding to an old post......... Do you still do this, and if so, do your staff fill in the marksheet during the evening or later? It seems a good idea, but as staff don't all have laptops it would logistically be difficult for us to get them filling in the marksheets during parents evening.

Update - The BCS have just phoned to see whether we're still interested (at £15 per student we're not!) They're hoping to reduce the cost of this, though to what they don't know at this time!
