For those of us new to this, do you have a full feature list (apologies if I missed it on the website!) And is this designed for use in a clean isntall environment, or can it be added to a windows domain with Exchange, etc, with no issue? I'm guessing as it's based on Ubuntu it can be! Semes to be okay, I've tried downloading via the squidclient and it appears to be (lot of random scrolling text on screen!) I've also gone to BBC - Homepage and have the html for the page on screen so it seems to be an issue between dansguardian and squid? edit: Actually the problem is there accessing squid direct from a client PC (i.e. bypassing Dansguardian) I've attached my squid.conf (renamed to .txt), I don't think I've left any passwords in there! We're running Ubuntu 10.04, Squid 3 and Dansguardian 2.10.1.1. Cheers! squid.txt

Hi, I've spent the last week setting up Ubuntu, Squid and dansguardian. I was making good progress up to yesterday. With just the one group Danguardian was filtering access. Today as I was going to setup more groups I've hit a big issue! It seems that any web traffic going through Squid is incredibly slow or times out. There's only me using our network (at most two of us), I'm hitting squid direct (3128) not going through Dansguardian at the moment, squid is forwarding to our LAs ISA server and authenticating against it (not using our AD credentials as the ISA is on a different network, so it's a different user and pass which Squid supplies to the ISA box). In the cache log for squid I am seeing: As well as From Google I believe a lot of the tcp_miss can be ignored as they're expected... I was hoping today to finish off this and move onto the next item on the ever growing list of summer jobs!

I did, this time last year. Unless you book years in advance, finding a decent venue with a Saturday free and allowing time for a honeymoon during school hols is quite tricky! Congrats to you both and have a great day, enjoy every moment as it goes so quick and a times seems a blur!

Currently going through this pain myself. We authenticate against 2008 and 2008R2 servers. I have used likewise-open on Ubuntu 10.04. It passes the tests okay and show up in ADUC. Currently trying to get Internet access workiing through Squid > Dansguardian and ISA 2006(which is not on our domain and requries authentication) Nowt like a challenge

Thanks to the comments above, and my newly arrived "Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server guide" book I now have software RAID 1 running on my Ubuntu (verifired by running mdstat). So there wasn't really a RAID failure, but as Synack said a sneaky software implementation of what looked like Hardware RAID! Now for squid and dansguardian!

That was my worry to, but everyone's in the same boat - you want or need a holiday but don't want to be alone but don't know how you'll get on with strangers - I wouldn't let that put you off, but if you are worried about it, if you were to pick a holiday around an activity then I'm sure you'd find like minded people

A few years back I was in the same boat, I went on my own for 5 days to Sweden travelling around in my car and enjoyed it. I also went to North Cyprus with Solo's holidays and had a great time. Somehow we all worked out who was in the group whilst on the plane and started talking to each other. You can do as much or as little as you want in the group, it was nice not to eat alone!

Thanks both. I've got installed and have selected LVM. Can I setup the software RAID once it's installed? Haven't had a chance to Google this yet, but will do tomorrow. I've also ordered a Ubuntu server book so plenty of reading and playing around next week when it turns up!

Thanks, I'll give software RAID a go. I should have put in the post what board it is! It's an Intel SE7320, a bottom end server board

I think this a hardware issue rather than O/S! I've taken our old Evesham Silveredge server (was running 2003 and Exchange 2003 but been offline for 18 months) and put Debian on it, it installed great. I changed my mind and reinstalled with Ubuntu 10.04 and I've had no end of trouble with RAID. The server has onboard RAID (0 or 1) and 2 160GB WD SATA disks. I'm a bit puzzled as the disks are in RAID 1, yet when I install Ubuntu asks which disk to install to, surely it should only see 1 as it's RAID 1? I've gone into the onboard RAID setup and ensured it is RAID 1 and initialised the RAID again, and run a consistency check, all is well! After installing Ubuntu and rebooting, I get immediately get a RAID degraded warning and the system won't boot. I've replaced the 'failed disk' and tried again, same error. I've tried reinstalling to the other disk during the install and get the same error. I haven't yet disabled the RAID and tried installing that way, I'll try that tomorrow (I've brought the server home as this is really bugging me!). I left the Debian disk in school so can't retry that until Monday (had none of the above issues with it though)... The idea is to use this server for Squid and Dansguardian......

I think this is a key point, unless you're paying out thousands annually and have trained staff then switching is going to cause more issues than it'll solve. I'm a windows tech (or rather NM!) through and through, but I am looking to Linux for new systems such as Koha on Debian (reminds me - must get our librarian to actually put the books onto it!) and now squid and Dansguardian on Ubuntu (if the server will let me - hardware issues!). But these are background projects, I couldn't risk switching a key server to Linux due to a lack of skills. Our head of IT has given me a list of software for my tech to install over the summer for DIDA, these are all FOSS due to budget constraints. When the opportunity presents itself I wil also seriously consider moving to OpenOffice, but this would be a gradual process due to many years of MS Office here and schemes of work being built around it (plus retraining staff) So back to Grumbledooks point, it's about reviewing FOSS or paid for software/OS, etc when a school can.
