I couldn't get VirtualBox to boot from the network card, so I just built a Windows 7 VM using a build disk ISO. Built, installed and works fine

The code library used for the project, Flourish, does support MSSQL. But, I've used a few custom queries which may or may not work with MSSQL. All I can say, is try it Should be easy enough. Retrieving a list of items in a DB table is really simple with the Flourish library. Hook up a drop-down box on the add toner form, and add a column in the events table to record who added it. To finish it off, modify the reports page to pull in the user. If you have a basic understanding of PHP you should be able to muddle through those changes

Eradicating the Staff Shared Drive
webman replied to powdarrmonkey's topic in Network and Classroom Management
With our recent move from CC3 to CC4, we took the opportunity to enforce some housekeeping of the shared areas. Our new staff folder looks like this: + Archive + years of unorganised rubbish! + ... + Staff Resources + Art + English + Geography + ... + Whole School + Admin + Curriculum The Archive folder is read-only, and will remain there for 2 months until departments have copied what they need to their own departmental folders. All staff have read and write access to the Whole School subfolders. Only departments members have write access to their own department folders. No one can write files or folders in the root folder and Whole School and Staff Resources. So far, it seems to be working well. -
RM CC4 Repoman "GUID" Viewer
webman replied to johnfermor's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Thanks very much John, I can see this being very useful for us -
To allow for future expansion? It makes much more sense (from a financial and 'minimal disruption' point of view) to put a reasonable amount of spares in while the job's getting done, to save the extra expense and hassle when X months down the line you need another line in there.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Conference...
webman replied to russdev's topic in General Chat
Congratulations Russ, all the best -
It's only just been brought to my attention by John that I'm down for attending this event. I have no records of emailing the registration address, and no recollection of registering via any other methods. There's no way I can attend, so please remove me Apologies to those who were expecting me to be there to answer any questions about classroombookings

[HOWTO] Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS on XenServer in PV mode
webman replied to webman's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
UPDATE: If you're now running XenServer 5.6 like we are, I discovered a post explaining a much simpler method using templates. Download a bash script to the pool master, run it to generate the template, and then create your VM from it. It's a netinst version (so will use the Internet) so I'd recommend changing the mirror to gb.archive.ubuntu.net. All the PV mode stuff and XenServer Tools just work - no messing around with config files at all. Installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 (32bit and 64bit) LTS » XenServer - Citrix Community -
Printers left on during holidays and nights/weekends
webman replied to localzuk's topic in Green Computing
We've just bought some timer sockets for all of our printers. Doesn't solve the holiday problem, but it will make a huge difference. -

codecharmer: I can't be 100% sure what they do when sent away for repair; but it does seem that the problem is only with the yellow board - but yes, all of our E-17 monitors have that same one (bar a few very minor variations in identification marks). Sorry to hear about your fried board Usually, using a power supply rated for a higher current shouldn't be a problem, but in this case it was - maybe pointing towards bad protection due to failing components.

Our students have had external access to our internally-hosted email system for 7 years and have had very few problems, if any, that I remember.

hakko: Just a re-solder: 15 minutes. Full capacitor replacement: 40-50 minutes. Those times are just for me - it depends on how comfortable people are with soldering, taking things apart etc. It also takes time to gather & set out tools and put them away again afterwards, so I wait until I have a morning or afternoon in order to do 3-4 of them at a time. The first time you do it will probably take a little longer to do.

plexer: In one of bossman's posts about the Badcaps forum, it seems that the seller of that Ebay item is a member on the Badcaps forum that bossman has contact with

Xen P2V has worked great for what we've done so far. We even virtualised our SIMS server just as a test, and it worked fine. When doing Linux ones, I prefer to set up a fresh install with the correct Xen-compatible Kernel (to get a proper paravirtualised install) and just migrate services/data.

That looks rock hard to complete -
It sounds like you need two programs - one to maintain the list of AD machines in the DB, and the other to install software and update the DB accordingly. Try and flowchart how you want it to work (your list above is a good start!), and then work out what functions you'll need to code up to produce that one bit of functionality. One way to get a fresh list of machines from AD into the DB, is to just empty the machines table each time. This saves a lot of checking for consistency and is one less area of complexity you have to worry about. As long as you use machine names as keys when referencing software installs, it should be fine.

MSSQL/MySQL/SQLite? The best thing to do would be to look on the AutoIt forum for a UDF code module that interacts with your chosen database. I think AutoIt can interact with ODBC, but you'd need to ensure the workstation has the necessary ODBC driver installed for your database engine.

What about the switch itself - managed/unmanaged? Any port security set up? Have you tried any other switches? When you say there's no link - do you mean the connection LED on the SAN/switch interface for the connector isn't lit up?

I like both tea and coffee. We alternate between flavoured and non-flavoured ground coffee here - currently finishing off the last lot of rich hazelnut from Whittard's - yum! 3-5 cups during work is the average for me.
