Check the settings for SCCM clients for how often they look for policy updates... Pushing out application packages with SCCM 2007 quickly - Server Fault Lower it to 5 minutes or so then they'll check for new advertisements more often. Alternatively on each client open up the control panel applet and from actions run "machine policy and evaluation cycle"

Works a treat for us with SCCM 2007, I do my advertisements by room and leave them to it Had to do it via PXE this year though due to changing from IDE to AHCI which needs manual intervention.

And here begins the biggest gamble MS have done in a long time, the whole future direction of the company looks to be placed on getting a chunk of the tablet market and the unified Metro UI. Office 2013 is really bizarre at the moment, you'd expect it to have live tiles and run straight from Metro but nope it uses the standard icon tiles and runs via the Win32 desktop... very odd as an Outlook live tile would actually be a Metro feature that I'd actually find useful.

Just upgraded one of my test domains to 365, is there any way to enable Plan A2 features without EES? Reason being I want to try out the Sharepoint and Lync features before upgrading our live domain (which is also the one that would be attached to our MS agreement)

Interface does feel very snappy which is a big improvement on before

So that's what the rather cumbersome email from Live@Edu was about! Like the sound of the auto sort of personal and automated messages, nothing new tech wise but a neat idea if it works. What does seem odd is the rebranding, whatever you think of the platform Hotmail is known worldwide whereas as it stands we could now end up with a conversation that could go something like... "OK you're on Outlook, but hold on what you want is your Outlook Live account (Live@Edu) which isn't the same as Outlook on Office 365 which we haven't been upgraded to yet... also all these are different to the program called Outlook which is on your desktop" Might end up being one of those branding choices that gets reversed in 6 months time when all the users are still calling it Outlook and getting utterly confused as to where their Hotmail account has gone.

I've got a nifty little script I found from Technet you can run as a scheduled task, it sends a reminder 14 days beforehand then nags and nags every day for the last 10 days before expiry. Needed it due to OWA 2007 not handling expired passwords too well. If you want it I'll dig it out...

I don't think it's just the issue of change, more of an issue that the change seems to have been done for change's sake on desktops and makes you less productive than the previous UI. Also the lack of choice doesn't help, the fact you can't go back to desktop only is very irritating, especially if all your apps are Win32 based anyway. Would've been much less outcry if the Desktop was left as an option for users even if Metro was default (think Luna vs Classic Start Menu on XP)

The only thing that was annoying with this is that the cursor doesn't sit at the end of the pre-filled text so the user has to move it manually

Arthur are you a Windows 8 evangelist or something as you seem very passionate about fighting its corner! The Desktop experience is all over the place, showed up again today when I opened up an SD card in desktop My Computer view but the default open action is in the Metro app... cue annoying Alt Tab moments to open each photo as it didn't pick up the other images as the classic Photo Viewer would

Hmmm that's two now so time to pester them a bit more next time I get a chance What happened with the Live@Edu block on 2.3? I found a couple of bugs in the 2.x version... settings page doesn't save impersonation account details if you put the block in a course page it breaks Moodle drag & drop (AJAX conflict?) logout page text is really badly worded and formatted can't change the appearance of the login screen (own logo \ colour scheme) No point working with the Live@Edu block now anyway, we're going back to a standard auth method until something comes out for 365. If MS do support 365 with Moodle it needs to use the standard Moodle authentication plugin system as the Live@Edu method was a bit clunky tbh.

What one was it? Might be useful for others having the same issue...

I'd love to see a 365 \ Moodle plugin but not getting my hopes up at the moment after the 2.x version of the Live@Edu block had to be taken up by Moodlerooms (and looks a bit half baked from my testing sadly)

I know people don't like doing it but try the supported sysprep method and see if it behaves any better...

Someone in the design team must be a real fan of Windows 1.0 \ 2.0... the Windows 8 default cyan \ blue theme looks like we've landed in the 80's again Not a fan of the vast amounts of of white space, too bright for my liking and no distinction between areas of the screen, same with a lot of the Windows 8 default Metro apps

Nothing at the moment, Microsoft prefer you to get a portal that provides SSO into Moodle \ 365 but there's no way to pick up the email or file repositories inside of the VLE I'm hoping that some Moodle developers can get together and create an ADFS auth plugin for Moodle instead of LDAP... would be great for hosted sites as you don't need to open up LDAP to the Internet plus you'd be able to jump between Moodle and 365 at will. Then what you'd need is a Sharepoint repository and you could pull in documents you've made in 365 to be used in Moodle assignments etc. Will it happen? Doubt it from Microsoft's side as it seems like they're trying to push people onto Sharepoint as a VLE alternative but I for one won't be dropping Moodle anytime soon... Foxconn boards are awful, had the displeasure of having a batch of Evesham PCs arrive with them a couple of years back (was expecting MSI) and their reliability record was awful. Boards just randomly overheating and packing up... onboard VGA blown, random BSODs etc. We bought a set of 10 boards as spares just after Evesham went under and went through the lot within a year or so! After that I stick solely with Intel OEM boards unless the machine is Lenovo \ HP business-grade kit.

Yup that's the logic I'm going down with our older laptops; the SSDs make a huge difference and means we can use them for another year or two with Windows 7 (the 5400rpm HDD kills them atm)

Was going to try that to see if they're worth upgrading then looked at the case again, realised we'd have to crack them all open and decided it wasn't worth the aggro based on the (lack of) speed of the rest of the components

vSphere 4.1 at the moment, we have maintenance licenses to go to 5 but there's other things that need doing first so not upgrading yet. We're on the Essentials Plus bundle so it's a paid version but we use the ESXi kernel, you have no choice in 5 anyway so made sense to go straight to it and save on HD costs for the VM hosts. Granted Hyper-V is thrown in with Windows (we do the same with the Datacenter licenses, 6 licenses covers our 3 x dual-cpu hosts on EES) but I didn't want to worry about a) drivers and b) Windows Updates on my host machines... for what it cost in the grand scheme of the project I'd say vSphere been worth it thus far

Does this still happen even if you a) set ACLs on the profile share to allow Administrator access and b) set the GPO that's meant to add Administrators to the profile folder security?
