@Michael Maybe it's Monday morning syndrome but just need to confirm what you're saying above... let me know if I've understood these correctly... 1) need to make sure the GPO for Offline stuff is left unconfigured. If this is the case will disabling Offline files generally be sufficient to stop them trying to sync (not a fan of Offline Files generally so want it off) 2) keep Verbose messages on (I have them on at the moment as I wanted to see how quickly policies were applying and it shows the user something is actually happening instead of "please wait") 3) make sure Always Wait for Network is on (we have that on at the moment) On our systems Preparing Desktop appears for about 10-20 seconds, already got WinMail disabled but would like to make it even quicker if possible! I was originally blaming this on our old firewall but getting the same issues even with our shiny new Palo Alto so thinking there's something else at play... On every other site on t'Internets browsing is fast; Google logins work fine and all seems normal. As soon as you try and login to a Microsoft site e.g. Hotmail, SkyDrive etc it's like wading through treacle. Just get stuck with the loading circle for 30 seconds+ Eventually you get there but everything is still clunky and doesn't feel quite right. Moving between MS services e.g. going from email to SkyDrive takes time with the loading circle again. Are there particular domains \ ports that the authentication system needs to be specifically allowed that it gets narky without being there? Our part-time students use their own accounts for email for the most part so need to try and speed the login process up as it reflects poorly on the rest of the browsing experience.

Same for me, on my x100e which only has a single core AMD Neo it flies and the UI feels smoother than the preview relases

Was a genuine question, got 8 on my main laptop atm seeing if I can learn to like it The shortcuts gives the recent items but still jumps to Desktop mode and small lists, was hoping there's a way to do it seamlessly via the tiles UI

They've all completed now, looking a bit closer at the log the initial stat for time is a bit misleading. Turns out most of the time spent for the long winded ones is being stuck in a queue, the actual move process took about 3 minutes for each mailbox (sizes of only a couple of MB, quite a few only in KB)

My work desktop's Windows 7 installation is getting a bit ropey so if I feel like pain I might chuck it on there in the vain hope of starting to like it through the IT equivalent of Stockholm syndrome

I'm moving our training install of Exchange (only used for sending emails between Outlook clients) from physical 2007 to a VMWare virtual machine on 2010. Installation and patches went through easily enough (SP2 UR3). Moved OAB, set new Send connector etc, now moving mailboxes. I fired off the local move request on about 200 mailboxes (database size under 1GB ) so when the dialog box showed success I thought that was that. Refreshed the Mailboxes pane and noticed the majority were still showing as being on the old databases... then spotted the Move Requests menu option. Looking in there I can see progress is being made, although rather slowly. Empty mailboxes take about 3-5 minutes to move although I've just seen one saying 23 minutes?! Is it meant to be this slow or is something a bit wrong? The VM is in a pool with 10 SAS 15k disks and VMWare isn't showing heavy disk writes or latency (around 50-100 IOPS max). We're scheduling our proper Exchange server to move during Autumn so this has been useful to catch any potential issues early on as staff mailboxes are a lot larger than these training ones!

One for Arthur perhaps Is there any way using only the Metro UI, to open a jump list of recently opened documents? Seems like I'm one of the 1.2% of users who user Start Menu jump lists as I don't like multiple pinned taskbar icons. Knowing that you can't now bypass Metro on boot how can I open recent document directly from the Metro UI without opening the app first? Granted some might say Office 2013 has a better opening screen that does something similar but other apps won't, so is there any Metro way to do it as I can't see one at the moment?

I know that feeling although rather than have gaps when moving my 2003 servers (which end in 01 and 02) I've gone the whole hog and made the new ones 08a and 08b instead

Nice find, sounds messy and more additional cost though. Imo either let the students use personal accounts and be done with it or provision internally. Trying to mix and match the two seems neither here nor there.

Interesting reading about those server SSDs, how much did they set you back? Have been considering VDI for some time now but it all comes back to the crazy prices for the backend storage in order to get the IOPs we'd need for 50-100 Windows 7 desktops (design guides say 20 IOPS per machine so 20 x 100 = 2000 IOPS aka 10-11 15k SAS hard drives... ouch). A couple of SSDs would do the job perfectly with a couple of HDDs for state change data but so far the cost has been prohibitive Btw the font size on your blog is a bit on the small side imo One other personal preference is I'd go for a 2-column layout rather than 3, makes it easier to read the articles as you eyes aren't jumping down the lines so much.

People don't seem to like this much, why is it a problem particularly? I like having the control over each app and setup process
