Still really disappointed with this but that's the cynical business world we live in sadly So saying you use your single user RT at home then decide to take it in to work as a BYOD device, is the version of Office going to refuse to connect to Office 365 without a license upgrade? Now it says 365 covers a commercial license so I wonder how MS will play his, does your 365 license cover the staff to use any personal RT device commercially or is this another VECD type ripoff in the making?

Yup it comes down to that and it as a pure tech-head it irritates the hell out of me, the point a couple of posts up about the cost increase of the new tablets says it all really This video is sounding epic already, nice work! Have been impressed with Office 2013 on the desktop so hoping it works as well on a tablet, certainly the fluidity of the interface should suit it down to the ground.

Why do we need to have a distinction between a "personal" tablet and a "professional" tablet? In which case I really think they've missed a trick there An affordable, managed tablet is what the market is crying out for and on a technical side really don't get what's so difficult in achieving it once MS had done the hard part in porting Windows to ARM? Yes it can't run desktop apps but your average business user wants to access their network files and edit them in Office. A domain join with tablet policy and native network drive support at £400 would be a sure iPad killer. A Surface Pro at £1000 not so much so (and not as thin \ light either) Basically the one RT device could easily cover both bases, seems a shame that it's restricted (either deliberately or just hasn't got the tech side sorted in time) Trouble with waiting on Atom ranges etc is some of the lower priced stuff so far looks so poor in comparison e.g that Advent from the other day, really need something to hit that sweet spot to make it worthwhile. Yes it's high expectations but why shouldn't we have them from a company the size of MS

Hmmm interesting but not sure I agree on that one. What I hoped from the Microsoft line is that we'd have something that's truly... - manageable - shareable - productive Now given the price point of £400+ for the RT there's no way we could give one to each student so for me the only thing that can make it better than an iPad is the ability to have separate users on the device, basically a tablet version of a domained PC. Unfortunately it's not looking good so far with the RT due to the lack of domain functionality, could live with it if the integration with either SkyDrive or Office 365 is slick enough but haven't really seen much of it yet. The Pro tablets are silly money, not going to shell out the best part of £1000 for the sake of a touch screen...

Can you show us how well Office works on it via touch in the real world? Also does the RT have a standard Windows login screen so it can be used as a true multi user tablet? Basically can you give it to any student to use then another one afterwards.

I'm guessing by your description you've got SMART Notebook 11 and the same version of the drivers? If so I don't think you can go back to the old style of drawing on the desktop as the Ink Layer has been redesigned and needs the SMART Ink app running in the background to work at all. If you uninstall it all you'll get is a mouse pointer when you try and use the pens on the desktop.

So reading that page you can't deploy an app to a machine for all users at all and it's either installed at image time or has to be per user? Seriously?

Thanks for the link, can never find subscriber downloads when I go through Technet normally. Downloading now, might take the plunge on my work desktop and definitely update the Preview version on my x100, sits nicely with the Office 365 Preview I'm playing with at the mo. As for @jamesfed be glad you're not closer to me or I'd be coming over to nick your Surface lol, want to get my hands on one to test

I want a Pro but if it's going to be the best part of £1000 I'll stick with a laptop... this touchscreen revolution seems to be a good excuse to ramp prices (and profit margins) right back up after PCs \ laptops had pretty much hit the bottom line price-wise

Did the same trick on a Q1 Ultra but text is a bit fuzzy as you'd expect. It's a real shame 8 won't run on the native net book resolutions but the cynic in me says if it ran well on existing devices you wouldn't need to go out and spent £500+ on a new convertible tablet

Agree with above, swap monitor and cable for known good items and if it still doesn't work get it fixed under warranty. It's not your problem to diagnose or worry about, if it doesn't work out the box get the manufacturer to sort it.

Only played the first bit of it so far but noticed how much more atmospheric it is this time round... maybe because I'm playing it with gaming headphones and the proper soundtrack rather than timidly on standard PC speakers while the telly was on (those were the days!)

We use Chrome as IE is hopeless with Moodle 2.3 and doesn't support drag and drop file uploads

Can't see netbooks having much of a future now, although I reckon the Lenovo x131e will continue to sell as it's more of a business machine. Can you still get them with an i3 rather than AMD CPU? I'm still a bit gutted Windows 8 won't run on original netbook screen resolutions as performance wise it's great for those devices (even runs well on a Samsung Q1 Ultra)

Smigdeploy worked well for me when I migrated

Staff using custom Office settings and so on won't roam if they hot desk so roaming does have its place imo. Wouldn't it drive you crackers to set up your environment every time? For classrooms where you need consistency I go for mandatory profiles but depends on the needs of your users. If logons are taking 30 minutes something is horribly wrong somewhere, is the rest of the network slow or are the profiles huuuge?

All working nicely on our test machines so far (IT techs make great guinea pigs ) but still wondering best practice re: Offline Files. Reading stuff like this Offline Files - Does it really suck or are we doing something wrong? - Spiceworks suggests it's still not that great but I've also read somewhere else MS designed folder redirection in 7 to be used with Offline Files and it's not seen as good practice to run purely "online"?

Timbo343 wrote a guide for how to repair them so we're going to give that a shot, got nothing to lose as they're no good in their current state.

Still seems odd that you can't domain an RT... if you were happy with the Metro apps for Office and wanted to primarily view documents on it surely the domain feature is simple enough to add in there? I think they missed a trick on that one (or alternatively have made a clever move by forcing people to spend more £££ on the Pro version to get the feature set they want)

The thought that struck me with the "hands off" approach until launch was that MS aren't happy with the quality of Windows 8 apps and want until the last moment to get them ready. Hardware I doubt is a massive gamble unless they've messed up something simple like battery / screen. However Windows 8 itself and the offerings in the Windows Store would be a concern, especially on the RT where you can't install anything else. Are basic apps like Facebook sorted for 8 yet as the Store so far has looked rather barren. Personally I'd like a Surface Pro but it's not worth £800+ it sounds like MS want to charge for it... I could get an equivalent laptop for less and live without the touchscreen.

That does sound like me to a tee Like I say, don't need to do the wireless bridge, just one AP with an Ethernet cable tracking back to the router over PoE... the smaller and less obtrousive it looks the better. Thought about Powerline but I'd need a couple to do upstairs and downstairs whereas I think one AP dead centre will do the trick nicely (as opposed to beaming into the loft and halfway across the street!) @m25man did you mean UBNT or Airmax i.e. two different products or the same thing?
