Only read this quickly but assuming the DC is a VM with its network set to 100 have you got another VM set up with the same network on the same ESXi host? If so can the DC ping that? If you set a port on the switch untagged in VLAN 100 with a physical PC plugged into it can the DC ping that?

Very lame if they make people pay for this as was originally planned. If those screenshots are showing the biggest changes there's no really new features, just fixes that should've been in the initial release. Haha this was one of the things that really irritated me about the Win8 search, looks like MS have finally seen the light

That's fine but with the managed MSI installer, ADMs and internal update source rather than hundreds (or thousands) of machines hammering the Internet connection for auto updates. Skype used to be another culprit of this.

I use Powershell for this, having to do a lot of post-imaging installations, check out the AutoLogonCommands section at the end of the sysprep file here... Hub Metro by Collabco Software Basically a SharePoint front-end that can suck data in from various platforms (Moodle, timetable, PaperCut etc) then SSO you into any of those platforms e.g. Moodle login. That way you keep your VLE on the best platform (Moodle) but have a better entry point for student Intranet and live data

If you liked your Metro you could build a 1.8 for under a grand that will embarrass a lot more expensive cars on the road Also cheap right now any MG ZR, again a 160VVC will be quick and easily get one of those for £1k-2k

When you say "removed all libraries" do you mean you removed the Public locations or disabled Libraries completely?

Very similar for me as well, was bored to tears when ICT lessons were just doing touch typing - I remember someone else crashing the main file server by doing exponentially growing copy \ pastes of "aaaaa sssss ddddd" on his home area (quotas were a hidden ini file and very easy to edit if you used File Manager, which seemed to happily ignore network permissions from what i remember!) Fortunately the Network Manager saw I could be useful and starting teaching me A+ and fixing \ dismantling old PCs (I remember hunting for Intel Pro/100 cards in old boxes and the NM showing me how much faster 100Mb was compared to the old coax 10Mb network, those were the days ) The RasPi idea sounds like a good one, get them to find something they're interested in and create a project using it - even if it's XBMC installing a Linux distro etc is going to be more useful than what they're doing now.

Just for fun, for those using Win8 for any extended period of time what changes would you make to the UI to make it smoother \ easier to use and why? First one for me and something I Photoshopped up to see how it looks, Metro-ised Start Menu & Run replacement to avoid the jarring full screen shift when in desktop mode Second one, make the trackpad more consistent in Metro apps e.g. on the Start Screen dragging across moves tiles without needing to use scroll bars (nice) but in the Store and other apps this doesn't work and you have to hunt for the rather small and hard to see horizontal scroll bars (not nice)

It's great for running open-source products on the LAMP stack - more stable and less resource hungry than Windows for web platforms. Also lots of good firewall appliances such as Smoothwall and pfSense

Am I missing something here, thought the point of cloud apps would be to reduce the amount of grunt needed on the client side yet this beast has equivalent power to a full blown desktop PC?!

It's quick, especially on slower laptops where you notice the performance benefits The bootloader for dual boot looks pretty but reboots the machine to switch to the secondary OS Just got a new work laptop and felt the need to install Win8 onto it, think the Stockholm Syndrome has set in I could live with the Start Screen if I could make one UI tweak, which one day I will get around to Photoshopping...

The new UI for 365 is miles better than what's there at the moment, much more user focused

If you're using a Windows Server 2008 R2 \ 2012 box for KMS you need to use the Windows Server KMS key from VLSC instead of the Windows 7 \ 8 one...

Really disappointed at MS for not having at least one Pro on the stand at BETT. Originally wanted a Pro but without the opportunity to test one I've had my head turned by the Lenovo Helix instead... Convertible Ultrabook Laptop & Tablet PC | ThinkPad Helix | 11.6" with Windows 8 (US) If MS weren't trying to shift the spotlight onto their partners they've made a bit of a mess with the Surface launch, which is a shame as the physical design and quality of the product is excellent.

Intel for reliability or Crucial M4 for performance \ price. Haven't used Samsung yet but I remember the early reviews being very positive in terms of performance. Avoid OCZ like the plague, too many horror stories.

Evaluated both but went with Ruckus, the main point against Meraki was the on-going subscription cost to keep it operational. The issue to me seems that if you don't pay the cloud controller license one year (an entirely possible scenario within education) then the whole lot becomes basically a pretty set of paperweights whereas in the Ruckus scenario it will still work but without any further updates \ support. (this was in 2012 so not sure if anything has changed since but looking at the Meraki website it still seems entirely cloud-controlled as far as I can tell)

I guess only time will tell on how well the Intels stand up vs "Enterprise" SSDs, depends if you're willing to run the risk of a bunch of them dying in a year or two time if the worst happens vs the speed increase you get right now
