bloody snow..hate, hate, hate.... I admit, if I didn't have to drive in it, it's be different. The whole area around my house gets no treatment/clearing, and I have cars both sides of the road to miss, and 3 lots of kiddies who insist on playing chicken on the run to the main road. Once on the main road, it's just a case of "drive at 25, slower if needs be, ignore the cretins". Then into the carpark here that's (as usual) untreated. Bah. Took the missus to work..dropped her off on the corner. Daren't go all the way to the door as I used to live down there, and it's a subsiding/twisty/bumpy/alternately cambered rollercoater, with a sheer drop to the severn.. 2 years ago was bad enough. If it kicks off here, I'm going...I can't walk back, and I'm not endangering myself. The cats thought it was ace..took them out in it. Kitten went utterly demented trying to swat/kill/eat the flakes, and the big one kept growling at them..

Flix - make time lapse videos with a webcam Just bought this for our use, trying it in science to do a time-lapse show of seeds germinating and sprouting - seems very nice! The guy has said he'd value feedback from education users - have a look, see what you think..?

another thumbs up for the 3005 and 4250 here. we use 4250s for staff printing (higher speed, high volume), and 3005s for Dept and students (quick enough, damn good).

we do ours...whenever we think about it. We've just bought a compressor to dust the PCs/projectors, and I'll probably use it to blow the crumbs/dribble/snot/skin/dandruff/bodily hair out of the keyboards, but...that's about it. I'm not worried - if we lose a few to germ warfare, that's a bonus..

The missus worked at an FE college for a while, and one of her "tasks" was to create a web based inventory system for consumables etc, based on barcodes IIRC. I asked her how they did the inventory, as doing ours honks me off every year. They asset tag/barcode the kit, and then put one on each room say..on the top of the doorframe, out of the way. That way, you beep the room, system says "you have "x" in there"..etc. You could always create the barcodes yourself...there are lots of programmes capable of it..although if you did it room based you could always just use the codes already on the machinery from manufacturing, could you not? They will be unique, after all..

It's like I've said for a good 6 months now... Where will we be in..say..3 years? Hell knows. We do what we can do, until we can't..that's the size of it. Life will go on, but we'll have to change the way we do things. In some cases I think it'll mean a big shock as people start having to live within their means and not "keep up with the joneses". We've got lazy, we've forgotten what the previous generation taught about thrift and economy, and we live on credit. We love gadgets, convenience and things on tap...I can see big changes there. I was always taught that credit/loans/spending what you don't have is the height of idiocy..hence why I refuse to own a credit card, and why I try to "make do and mend" if I can, and if I DO have to buy something I opt for the cheapest option and pay it off, if I can't afford it, I do without. I don't understand why (or indeed how) companies managed for so long on vapour and promises..it's a problem we made, and now it's coming back to bite. Anyone read "Making Money" by Pratchett? The last page on finance is spot on. We do indeed live in interesting times.

got the NM last week...heard him say on the phone "I'll call you back after I've got lunch"..I had to do it... "Just nipping to sort out something in art...quick job".. Off I go, to the kitchen. Screwdriver out, fuse out of the microwave, plug back in, walk away to get a drink.. In comes NM..into kitchen.."clunk, rustle, clunk, "eh?" "WHAT??" "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" It's BROKEN!! AARGH!!" you have to sometimes.. I did offer him the fuse and screwdriver after though, despite what he called me.. Day after that we were both in the disabled loo in the staff room, using the hand drier to soften the glue on a smashed IPhone screen...cue "gently now, gently..get it in..watch your eyes, now..lever it..careful...hmm, more heat needed..ahhh...steady, careful..oh toss, it split..ah balls, time for a tea break.."..and out we both walk..boy did we get some funny looks...

I always am...I've whipped one teacher today for asking inane questions. Rubber band guns are loaded and ready on my and NMs desk... Bring the horde on..

what manufacturer? I get this with our Dells quite a bit. I put it down to flexing connections on the front board..some drives will flex it more than others due to width etc..

Hell no, Personal Computer predates IBM, I'm sure. They just associated the term with a given box. Maybe not x86, but there's a wealth of "pre model 5100" kit that was in it's time referred to as "personal computer" I refer you to "Personal Electronic Transactor", the Commodore PET. Lots of others too. Or the Amstrad PCW.."Personal Computer WordProcessor". PC has only become generic to IBM and clones since they became mainstream. And please don't remind me of the PC-XT and the PS/2...gah..PS/2 Model 55SX with MCA, what a bag of angular spanners. Even upto the PS/Valuepoint models of the 90's, I hated that line..The 5100 and 5150 had character, the XT was a whiny dead end with a rakish case, and the AT was quite nice monolith in its way, but the PS series...aarghhhh...

Or Linux. Which isn't far removed from OSX..heh..

There is NO such thing..., this annoys me. A PC is a PC. A hardware base, a collection of circuits, a non-intelligent non-SMT entity. x86, x64, Intel, Amd, Transmeta, whatever - THATS a PC. A Personal Computer. Windows is an OS, OSX and linux ditto. There is no "windows PC", merely a PC with Windows on. I know nothing about intel based macs, but I have to assume they can use industry standard hardware, surely? Even powerPC based Macs can use non-apple hardware - I've fitted non-apple kit into G3/G4 units before...no issue? Sorry, but that's a very personal hatred...

does that still hold true with the transition to intel kit?

indeed..but by the time I buy it for £1k or less and rag the nuts off it until it goes boing, it's a moot point.. If it costs more than I paid for it to make it work, stock-car the thing until it breaks fully, then weigh it in. By that point, the tech will probably have settled a bit and any bugs will have been sorted. Don't get me wrong, I love tech..but Cars should be less tech and more reliant on drivers learning to control them by hand..how many idiots now think ABS/TC is a cure for crashing, and stability control etc is an excuse to drive like a noob... Electronics for engine managent and economy, yes. PAS control, maybe..the rest? Can't say as I miss any of it. Why integrate everything into "modules" that kill 50% of the car for a fault equivalent to that of a duff relay, yet at 100x the cost to fix? Daft. I have no CL/ABS/TC/Aircon/EW etc...manual winders, manual locks, manual heating, Singlepoint Efi with discrete parts that are easily diagnosed and swapped, PAS that runs off an engine driven pump, and an autobox that's quite simple and intelligent, yet isn't so complex that I can't fix it if I need to (like my inhibitor switch failure 2 years ago that Vaux wanted £250 for, yet took me an hour and a tenner to fix) What i'd REALLY like is to build a kitcar..

hahahaha! My brother would disagree...his Passat TDi had nothing BUT electrical failures. Body control module, light warnings, engine stops, CL, everything..in the months he had it, it was driveable for maybe 2. That was a new model. He's traded it for a merc. Give me old tech. Body control modules? Doorknobs. Relays, thats the ticket. Seperate circuits, easy fix, nice and simple. I've had my P reg astra 5 years now, and wear and tear on suspension and cyl. head apart, it's cost me 1 backbox and 5 years servicing at £30 a time..never glitched, failed or sulked. Cars now are beyond home servicing and maintenance, and I refuse to be locked into dealerships and diagnostic rigs. I shall continue buying old cars and running them till they drop, doing my own work on them.

hah, coil pack. First thing I do when I change car is scrappie raid for parts..alternator, coil, bulbs etc. All go in my garage in case they're needed.
