9 years this summer in this place, 3 years in senior/junior/infant before that, some time also in county council mainframe/BACS/outreach team where we would go into schools as needed. Good fun. This year will be my 9th and final year at this building, as it's being demolished..that's going to feel odd. New building is almost complete though, so that'll be fun.

Paintbrush, arse. Compressor FTW! You should see the crap/pubes/snot/skin/dust/crumbs fly when we do our..yuck. We spray the KBs/Mice with foaming cleaner until plastered, leave it for a minute, blat them at full whack to force the foam into the KB and out of the drains (thanks dell), taking all the muck with it, and then we spray with antibac "phone sanitizer" spray and airdry with the gun again. Takes about a minute to do, does an excellent job.

tell me about it.. I'm coming to work for a rest. Add to that my car got written off last monday so I've had to source another ASAP, and I need the long weekend to lie in the garden and just wind right back down. Here's hoping the sickness does go soon..she's SO fed up of it, not being able to eat her favourite food etc, being reliant on me for everything, not being able to walk far/do much. Congrats matey! We just hit the 12 week marker on Tuesday too.. It is gruelling, isn't it. We had bleeding at 8 weeks (after losing twins at that point last time), and it's been fortnightly scans since that show a bleed that was above (and is now below and shrinking, thank god) the sprog. So we're taking it one day at a time, Jem's laying up as much as poss and I'm doing all the housework etc, and she's got EVIL morning nausea that lasts all day. The car contains a puke-bowl, and even the smell of gas sets her off, so I've had to crash learn cooking etc. We told immediate family (parents only) at 6 weeks, now it's 12 weeks, it's public. Still not allowing myself to get excited, but I'm also trying to plan "unoffically", as I can't help it..

Really? Is it an LEA thing, or a school thing? If LEA, who are you under?

We are an academy..have been for a few years now. Very little seems to have changed, except for the moving of the school to a new custom building, happening this summer.

I'm spraying our aircon filters with disinfectant, we have the gel handwash on all desks, we're cleaning the keyboards and mice....and all IT techs have facemasks in their desks and latex gloves. Hell no.. The keyboards were done over the hols as routine, the aircon I've always done as a matter of course, and the gel/facemasks/latex gloves are just for our webcam 3somes out of hours..:D;)

we're running this place down, as it's closing and being demolished in 4-5 months..some of our projectors are shockingly dim. I do strip them to clean the mirrors/lenses/optic path as we're not allowed to spend any cash now, but we're just praying they all hold on until the summer final closedown. Then we up and move to a new facility, new NECs throughout, new smartboards, new dual core/4gb/320gb workstations throughout..it'll be bliss. Can't wait.

yep. Rear guides or the side switch in the tray set to "custom" usually. There was one at the maternity unit when I went the other day..poor nurse was cursing it loads. I opened it up and flicked it back to "standard", and bosh..problem solved. Their IT dept was buying a replacement printer due to this "fault"... I have to say the printers diags, and a check of the gear that went on one of ours showed it to be in pretty good shape! I suggested she pass the info on to their techs.

We've got a 25 strong laptop suite from them - so far, machines have been ace. Tech support is first rate, engineers are great too. They're even sending me the parts so I can do them if needs be.

Ink splatter is one of the accepted reasons for my keeping latex gloves in my desk drawers. I say "accepted". Not necessarily "believed". Along with the whip (left by a teacher, very effective on numpty staff at the printer), and the Axis 2100 cam (GIMPcam), they go a long way to explaining some of the rumours about me, and what myself and the NM get upto after hours. Believe it or not, staff are somewhat scared of us... We do encourage it. Staff come in, rip the trays out the printer because their work hasn't come out and therefore it MUST be out of paper (we keep it stocked)..there often follows a "swish, crack, AARGH! NO! LEAVE IT alone. Does it SAY "pull my bloody trays out?", Is there a red light? No? Then LEARN - now go away and click the "OK" button to start the print, fool." The message gets across speedily. It also works to keep the head of IT in line...if he sees me pull on my gloves with a crack and a grin, he tends to wander off quick.

I have - I'm typing on an N270 1.6 now.. Impressive little sucker. It lives in my Linux powered Acer Aspire one netbook. Hyperthreaded, and doesn't blub when I give it an XP VM to run in conjunction with the mail client, several browser windows, OpenOffice 3, RAdmin under WINE for remote support, while also supporting the graphical effects of Compiz-fusion with shadowing/transparency/visual effects. In fact, I'll give it what's due - it kicks the bum of my Sempron desktop, and most of the kit we have here...! I was only using this AA1 for "on the go" mobility - now I'm finding it more of a pleasure to use than my desktop ever was. Also, bear in mind I'm running this all from 8gb flash SSD, which is reputedly slower than conventional disks. My VM actually lives on an SD card in the reader slot. Still use my home dualcore for demanding stuff, like rendering etc..but this little machine is more than capable of standing in for it.

HP laserjet swing plate assembly As I say, I've used the gear from a fuser-expired 4200, and it's a perfect swap. I used a long phillips driver with a slim shaft instead of their tool - perfect.

If you have a 425x printer, and it sounds grumbly/like a blender..watch it. We have 2. 1 perfect, 1 sounds like death warmed over. Remembering a thread on here about them eating their gears, I quizzed an HP engineer who was tittilating our 3800... "Swingplate gears". I said we had 2 dead 4200s we were given with shredded fusers, and he said "parts are the same.." So I've just gone to sort it..talk about a doddle. The old cog was chewed/worn/burred, and in 5 minutes I'd changed it out for the part from one of the demised 4200s..much better looking part too, with what looked like an extra spacer. Now that 4250 is silent again...bloody lovely.. If anyone wants instructons, let me know. You don't need HP, you don't need an engineer, and you don't need the entire swingplate.

We use the dept one (HP minibook 2133) for staff use (work on the fly when displaced), for emergency presentation use and so on. I use my own AA1 for web and general use (Linux), Remote control/support here (Radmin under WINE on Linux), and general network related diddling (using Virtualbox and an XP domain build VM, with the VM residing on an SD card). Big thumbs up for the Atom CPU..it fairly rips the VM along even with 512mb and an 8gb SSD. Contemplating retiring my Sempron Desktop and using the netbook on its own. I've got a 1gb upgrade for the RAM sat on the desk to bring it up to 1.5gb.

I've got one in the office with a smashed glass fascia and broken digitiser...if it was mine I'd cry, but I'll stick to my Ipaq 514.

agreed. Our Dells have internal speakers...release catches, crack the case oen a few inches, reach in and yank. Sorted. Piezo speakers..power drill.

I still reckon you can do this with a Robin Reliant, some extra fibreglass, a few outriggers on extendable rams, a "foam sandwich" flotation aid floorpan, a landrover snorkel mated to the SU carb and a propeller driven by a shaft run through the diff and out the back under the tank. Not that we ever put any thought into it when we worked on one, honest...
