We've got it on the office plasma behind me..first I knew of it was the NM howling with laughter..heh. Don't like brown, but then i don't like any of them overmuch. All politicians are, at heart, bent. In it for the cash and the perks, not for the country. Wouldn't give a broken Jetdirect for any of 'em.

Looking for a few pointers here really... We've reached a happy medium stage here now after the initial setup panic and network settling/fettling, and now we're looking at the day to day running of things. As part of this, I'm drawing up some logging sheets to go into our satellite switch cabs on the various floors for UPS visual checking/switch rebooting etc. How often (and how) do you check the operation and health of your UPS at your school? All of our satcabs have SmartUPS 2200XLs in the racks, but none have the smartslot remote management cards in. Until we can get some, it'll be visual checks only/maybe a self-test. The satcabs only hold the Cisco PoE switches, no servers. Thanks all..

aha! Spot on! Cheers for that, that's resolved EJay nicely. Also sorted out VST by changing permissions of the program files/cubasis folder to authenticated users. Happiness...with luck we can now remove one of the most annoying security related issues on this network..

We're making alterations to our new network, tightening things up from the ground state of things we were left with. One of these is that kids/staff were "admin rights enabled". Don't ask. We don't quite get it either. However, now we're locking everything up tight. Everything on my test PC in the modified "non admin" OU with a new user seems to work fine (hurrah!), with the exception of Dance EJay 2005, and Cubasis VST. Cubasis runs through the initial "startup splash" once, then vanishes. Subsequent startups give me an hourglass for a few seconds and that's it. No errors, no nothing. EJay keeps prompting for admin user and password to run "reg_start.exe". If I decline, it dies. OS on the workstations is Vista Business SP1 (fully updated), Servers are a mix of Win2k3R2 and Win2k8 x64, if it helps. Any suggestions? EJay seems to have gone for a burden - the sites are down, and according to Wikipedia the company is in liquidation. Failing that, any alternative suggestions for packages to do the same thing?

Had this in our last flat...first downstairs neighbours used to play insanely loud music all day (woman didn't work). Missus complained - "covers up the noise of your cats". Erm. WTF... Then they started it at 10pm or later, while the missus was pregnant. We had a LARGE disagreement about that, during which I pointed out I used to rent off his landlord and had his number on the phone, and a copy of the tenancy from the company they used...and that he was in breach, and it was a case of "pack it in NOW, or I'll start taking some action". Shortly after, they moved out. Bliss reigned for 3 months. Then next door built a gantry thing on their flat that put a verandah RIGHT outside our bathroom window (touching distance), and they used to have drunken parties until 3-4am. Then we got new neighbours downstairs...the mother is a bit doolally I think. Kids..nice enough, but all their mates started hanging around the flats/drive/my car, and we had police "drive by's" most nights, fighting, noise, and then they started doing DIY and hammering at midnight in their flat, under our bedroom. Father occasionally showed up, put up a gazebo in the shared garden with all sides shut..permanent whiff of joints etc. On one occasion I heard him call a cab, and say "it's OK, I'm broke so I'll leg it when he stops.". Nice. Then things started to go missing...our plants, our garden tools..they locked the shared tool cupboard, I found them using our kit etc. We decided to lose a months rent and break our contract to get out. When we were getting it all together, we had the kids saying "you're taking OUR stuff"..no, it was MINE. They'd even squirrelled our mountain bikes away for "safety"...yes...I'm sure you weren't eyeing them for parts for yours...mmhmm. The police are used to that family...and amusingly nobody has even LOOKED at that flat since (6 months now)..everyone locally knows them, and isn't interested. We're currently in a detached 2 bed cottage, on a 6 month lease...up in 5 days. However, I did ask about extending that and they said "fine with us".. Tiddler is 5 months old tomorrow...it's been bliss. No noise worries at all for anyone.

Just bought a CM-2 Climate for us too. Damned good. Going to fit the anti-intrusion to it, and we have an Axis Camera too that looks like it'll work with it. CM-2 will be set for buzzer and mail, also will be fitting the damp kit to it as the Airedales in there are not something I'd like to leak under the floor. Luckily our office is joined to the server room, seperated by some soundproofed doubleglazed doors..so we're close to hand if needed.

Cavaliers I've always liked. Heh. At least with Vauxhall, parts are cheap. Always some in the scrappers, and most parts are swappable between models. Meriva..are growing on me. Corsa B/C, yes. Astra MK1-MK4, yes. Cavs, yes. Calibras, yes. Zafiras are lovely, but a tad big for my needs..heh. I said to Jem, when this MK4 dies it'll be a Zaf or a Meriva to replace it. Or Possibly an Astravan with some added seats, as I rather like the Astravans..

Hah, yes. I stick to "bangernomics". 1st car was £200, 2nd was £250, 3rd was actually about 1 day away from the crusher before I paid £200 for it and drove it out of the yard with a bootfull of spares. 4th was immaculate, 25k on the dials, 1 old lady owner, selling for £800. I paid £1k, as the funds were going towards paying for a nursing home, and it was worth it. Then 3 weeks later, I hit a diesel spill and slammed into a parked van. Drove it home and repannelled it using the previous car (always keep a spare sat at mums until I've got the useful bits off). Had that car for 4 painless years. Then that was coming up for MOT and looking a bit worse for wear (Rover never could rustproof 'em)..so I paid £1700 for an immaculate 1.6 Astra Auto with 88k on the clocks and a full Vx/Motability history. Belting motor, 5 years and no hassle. Then someone arse-ended it and bent the car chassis. Now I have my £2k X reg Astra auto..again, FSH from Vx/Motability, 54k, all the toys. Nice motor. I've so far kinked the rear arch as I was forced to cut a corner too close and clipped a building (only a ding), and I noticed the other day some twunt at work had swiped past the rear bumper and scuffed it. Still..it's a £2k motor, owes me nothing, makes a great baby-wagon, and is a means to an end. I also own "The Heap"...a £500 barely running, brake system failure, 40mph tops, 12mpg 3 door Astra Auto. Bought for an emergency that lasted a week, now SORN and patiently waiting for me to find the time to sort the engine/brakes out. That's a project for the daughter when she's old enough to hold spanners and help. That has a massive crease in the rear quarter, and it's obviously had a badly repaired punch in the face..the headlamp is cable tied in, and the indicator is..held on with "no more nails". I love my motors..heh...I DO try to look after them, but if the worst happens I can just sigh and go spares hunting.

I had a lot of issues with these Saharas..dodgy ballasts were the usual. Solved the issue with ours..by dropping them in the bin. Ha. Hateful units. Now got Lan-managed NECs throughout.

We have Stone notebooks, and Rock notebooks (same company)..no complaints with the kit, the service, or the customer care..they've been quite simply ace..

What about getting the locker down to your DT Dept and getting some proper vents cut into it, then meshing it out? All of our PCs are desk-integrated, inside boxes a little bigger than the unit with holes on all sides and the door. Works well. These are Dell Precision T3400 dualcores. We have pods of 6, all like that with the PSUs venting into the hollow centre section of the desk. It gets a tad toasty, but no issues with the rigs yet.

Ironically, some of the "new" toys I'm seeing around aimed at little people are rereleases of my own childhood toys, often the same design and colour...I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to go mad and buy some to relive my youth with daughter... I lost my original BigTrak, my VIC20, all the starwars stuff etc in a housefire. What I wouldn't give to relive it all again...hehehehe...the cost of the 1970's eBay ones is scary!

We use vista here, and I had to use "set all users to run it in XPSP2 compatibility mode"

Hi Guys and Gals - topic bump! As we read it, we need to supply salary and attendance info for staff, along with NI details and other personal details etc in order to produce the return, this has to be done through our MIS (CMiS) - is this the case? Has anyone else done this? CMiS leaves something to be desired as a system for that, given that we run Simply Personnel for that. How do other schools do this, and who is responsible for it? Any info gratefully recieved!
