Here's a tip. Run it in compatibility mode for all users, in XPSP2 emulation. Works fine then - using it here.

This is why I buy used..both my written off P reg and the X are ex-Motability cars..3 years of Vauxhall full servicing at no expense spared, regular maintenance, then usually either sold to the owners or put into auction cheap. Both had/have MASSIVE service history folders, including hand written notes about ALL work the X reg has had from new by the old owner, up to 2 months before I bought it. Think the X is now at 60k. Resale values, I don't do. Run 'em till they die, treat them as essentially a disposable asset. 2k, 8 months ago...I've been paid more than it cost already. Yes, it's 9 years old this year..the last one would have been 11, the Nail is 14 years old..all still work well enough. As they say, face - bothered...there's NO value is second hand cars now...

Hmm. Listen for odd noises, if it's been started and warmed up before you test it, be wary. Check the tyres, check the fluid levels and colours, look at the general vehicle condition. If you can, get a road test. All my usual checks are geared towards making sure the autobox is sound. Oh, and if the dealer seems to be trying to pressure you to buy it with "someone's coming to see it" etc etc, laugh in their face. I've had that sell twice now. The place I bought the nail from had lots of cars, many with dents/broken trim...he said "I sell cheap cars". Then he gave me a load of flannel about the Asstrap being "for a friends daughter, but I've beaten them to it" etc. I just laughed and said "It's a sh*theap, make it roadworthy, slap a 12 month ticket on it, you've got a deal. I don't care about the dents, rust, the welded up exhaust, the "no more nails"...it's a temporary car for a few weeks." I think he was quite taken aback. It'll do 40 with a runup..it doesn't do hills, it won't do pulloff acceleration, it won't do fuel economy. it's a project..I know the ECU/MPi systems are sound, the timing is spot on, the engine had 67k on it..I can make it go. If I can't I'll nab the injection setup as a spare for the 1.6, use it as an educational "test" car for servicing then scrap it. He had an Accord estate auto in on a V plate...but by christ, it sounded rough. Why do I think it'll be bodged and sold off quick... All I can say is make sure you check it well.. My X reg 1.6 Astra auto cost me 2k, and apart from an ECU failure (£300), it's been spot on. I need to do the air/pollen/oil filters and oil change, and 1 new tyre..but it's painless and quite nice. The 1.6 I had before that was stunning (£1800)..in 5 years it only cost for the usual tyres/brakes/servicing..then some tit crushed my boot. I do have a "spare" 1.4 auto that cost me £400...and it's a nail. Sigh. Off the top of my head it needs a new headlamp, a new indicator, a complete exhaust rebuild (suspect a collapsed catalyst), a total rebuild of the brakes (no pressure), a steering check and tracking, and I'd say the autobox has been abused badly, judging by the turbine and fluid pump whine. It came to me with a full MOT...mmm...can we say dodgy garage? Luckily it's a spare, so it's sat on ramps until I find the time.

I'm of a similar outlook..mild CP, limited lower body strength and knackered fine motor controls mean soldering/engine removal work etc is right out of luck for me..at least on a work basis, heh. Still do both as a hobby mind you. IT can get dull...

I've always been an electronics and car nut...I was going to do an electronics course, but a friend convinced me to do IT instead. Do I regret it? Maybe, sometimes. Cars and IT are merging though.

I'll be in monday as we're having a total power shutdown and it's the first in here, so we want to be sure the BMS/Servers/UPS/windows/roof/theatre control/AVID suite/AMX come back online afterwards. That apart, I intend to use some holiday (not taken any this year except for 8 days paternity extension) and try to stay off until the 4th to spend it with the missus and my 5 week old. That still leaves me plenty for easter, and some for the 6 week break (which I'll be in for quite a bit anyway).

With regard to power saving and Projectors, we have NEC throughout, and since they're all CAT5 equipped, we've had them wired up and use the free NEC software to schedule power up/power off/source switch for broadcast and so on. Has the added bonus that we can see time left before maintenance..

We have IWBs and projectors in every room, volume controls built into the teacher station risers with "A-B" selectors to flick between PC and Video sound links, and all rooms have ceiling speakers. All Projectors are networked, in the "team teaching" double rooms they're linked together for optional "same on both" projection usage. They also patch back into SCION Composite to CAT6 converters, and then all these converge in our server room 3rd cab, that houses the multiplexer array, the 6 player DVD stack, the freeview box, sky box and the Digital Signage systems. This means staff book DVDs from our central library, we pop them in a free player and use the software to set the multiplexer to send the DVD and audio to the relevant room or rooms. They all have IR sensors built in so we book out the relevant remote as well, and the staff control the DVD from their room, as it all links back to cab 3. Works well. Also means we can patch the theatre control room/bluray player into the system for the weekly school broadcast, run by the video tech.

We had some S2100s..they were utter cr@p. 2 blew the ballasts, the 3rd kept soldiering on with the occasional strop that required me to tear it down and compressor the insides, eventually only wanting to function if it was the right way up as opposed to being in the mount. No air filters there either. They were dimming, but we took the "accidentally drop it with prejudice" option and replaced it with an NEC NP400

nothing surprises me. A friend has a PC with a duff internal modem - took it back to the shop of "experts"..they also gave her the "motherboard" excuse. The looks I got when I laughed and said "bye, I'm taking it". I do my family's PCs, and I have people "on the books" as it were that I've looked after for years as a hobby that still come back to me. I've also had my landlady ask...she got charged a couple of hundred for a virus removal. AND lost her data. Now, I never understand that. I ghost first, then work on removal, and if all else fails I reinstall and then pull the data back from the ghost file using ghost explorer. I also like PC world etc..the immortal phrase "Can I help you?", followed by "on reflection, I think not."

As subject really..I'm running W7 x32 Build 7100 for months with no issues. Went to install CS4, kept throwing up an unspecified error and spitting the dummy out. Elevated Admin perms did nothing. In the end I just disabled UAC, and it went through sweet as a nut. Job jobbed. Don't want to go back to Vistargh in the new building now...sigh..roll on Win7 RTM and deployment.

We've had one here with "exposure" to it. Some staff seem off too. I'm in theory "at risk" due to my health issues, and the missus is expecting in November..stressing about it? Nope. Worried a bit, yes, but...these things happen! What will be will be, I'm not about to start living in fear - that's no life at all.

Did have..in fact I had 2.. One rotted past salvageability and became a spares car, the white one was my much loved and modified 1.6LX Auto, with Wheelchair hoists, electric windows/mirrors/tilt/slide roof etc, big alternator, digidash conversion with voice synth and wood trim. Bloody lovely motor. Loads of room, simple to fix, went well and handled better than either Astra did/does. The bad point common to all was cr@p steel and rustproofing..they all rot to nothing. Every summer I stripped and rebuilt it, repainted etc..still came back. In the end I gave it to a fellow club member, and it went off in a convoy of 5 Maestros to a total restoration. Too good to scrap it, too much bodywork needed versus time available for me to dedicate. Still miss it now after 6 years. Kept the dash, mind. One of mine has just gone from the office...Z004, my hard working Quadcore Dell Poweredge. 18 months old, he was. *sob* Now virtualised, disjoined, and set for a new life as a backup box for our ESX lot. Z003 (Dual core PE) will follow soon. Heh. Z002 is just a glorified P4/3ghz desktop print server..he'll be retired. Z001 is clickview, and will also be retired. Ah, this feels strange..

All 12/13 of ours are going. I shall miss them. However, VSphere servers, 16gb+ RAM and terabytes of SAN in the new building shall go some way towards easing the pain, I'm sure.

You'd love my combi..it's mildly demented. Big boiler rated for a 4 bed detached property, in... a 2 bed top floor flat. The temperature dial doesn't seem to do much..if it fires, you'll get a "WHOOMF", and then either warm or screamingly hot water depending on its mood, unless you want a shower in which case you have to taunt it to get it to warm up then wait until it's had a paddy and ramped the temp up and up to a stable point then introduce the cold. At random it'll fire for no reason, sometimes you give it a reason and it ignores you. Sometimes it crashes on the heating mode and requires 3-4 consecutive power cycles to come back to an operating state, and/or threats with pliers and a rubber mallet to the side. I do like it..it's an E rated noncondenser from 1996, but it's a hoot. The only issues that bug me are the kitchen cold tap is broken (never buy a plastic mixer, they're sh1te) so if I want cold, I have to run the hot to wash up and leave it 3 hours to reach a sane temperature or shut down the boiler while the tap's running, and the bathroom tap/shower diverter gets that hot that it scales up on the surface/spout in a week or so, and to turn it off requires an oil filter strap wrench. Never touch it while it's running either, as it burns. At some point I've apparently got a plumber coming out again. He did say last time the tap would break soon after being repaired. I had an A rated condensing boiler previously with a cylinder..this one knocks spots off it. Even if it is shot to hell, heh..
