I've rolled one of the afflicted back to 8.11, changed his password, logged in and...so far, so good... We'll see shortly.. Bloody Abode. Sums up my opinion of them..

Oh I LIKE Foxit, BUT... it has a glitch too. Some users print, select say..20 pages... It proceeds to print hundreds, without asking. I had to pull it because of that. Seemed to happen mostly during doublesided printing to our 4250dtn.

hmm...I did ponder the profile...sod it, I'll reset his PW and have a poke about in it.. It's REALLY annoying, and it's TYPICAL that it would be this user, the SINGLE biggest drain on our time since they started here...

Sigh. We have a build we're using with Acrobat 9. We have lots of teachers who, quite successfully can use their PC to view our online ducument library (PDFs). We have 1 member of staff with 2 machines, identical hardware, identical build - who can't. He can open the PDFs inside IE6, then they vanish. Then he gets "memory allocation" errors with it. If he opens the PDFs standalone, he gets a different corruption/failure message. I've reinstalled the OS. No Go. I've uninstalled and reinstalled acrobat - no go. I've uninstalled it again and installed Acrobat 7 with writer - same issue, but no error messages. Adobe forums identify a big in 7, resolved in 7.0.5. That won't apply. Also found a thread about reader 9 not playing nice with roaming profiles but being fine as local admin - that article describes the issue we've got PERFECTLY. However, it's still not working...this is day 3 of the great PDF annoyance. I'm *this* close to rolling a build with NO damn acrobat in it..trying V8.11 as a last resort before I hit it with Foxit instead. What versions do you all use?

We use (legacy LEA naming): TAW (Telford and Wrekin) 900 (Zone 900 Nodal site - us) W - workstation/ Z - Server / V - Virtual/ P - Printer *next number in sequence* So, for instance, Our 4250dtn is TAW900P022, Print server is TAW900Z002 (soon to be a V), Teacher workstation is TAW900W190 etc Not ideal, but...it may be different when we go to the new building.

We've (and to an extent we have been encouraged to) dug our own hole here. Living above the means, credit, "buy now pay later" etc... Look at house prices..fantasy world. Anyone ready "Making Money" by Pratchett? I refer you to the end bit - about fantasy gold, and banks promising to honour wages etc, and the gold being there, provided nobody goes to look. It's the single best summary of the whole idiotic mess we're in that I've read. The whole damn thing has been a dream..dream profits, dream values - I defy anyone to tell me things like the house prices, the mortgages etc are really worth anything physical. An agreement based on money never really seen is all it is. And then it falls over. Lets see what happens - the population of the world needs curbing - this might just be the kick it needs. You can't stop an avalanche - the most you can hope for it to let it level out and then pick up the peices and try to learn from the experience. Governments never will. All bloody money-grabbing spin idiots. Their wages are ridiculous, and so is everything they do. To an extent the same holds true for councils. Power corrupts. The UK isn't london, yet how often do the Gov't really get out of there and see? You can't model the UK on one over-inflated glorified city. It's just plain idiocy. I was brought up by an accountant, and my elders. I live by "make do and mend" and "if you can't afford it, do without". I don't own a credit card (debit), I've never taken a loan. I don't see the point. What I have may not be new, it may not be flashy, and it may look "distressed", but it's all paid for outright, no debt incurred. As opposed to my brother, who's quite in debt...living above his means, and not seeming to see it..until now. It's all stupid. If anything, a coelition governement might be more use..

Chill Matey. We're in the same boat here - appointing a 3rd member of the team, I'm senior tech, and we have a NM too. Also going to a new building etc..NOT BSF, but similar - we appear to be "outside" BSF, on a parallel track. We DO have a limited amount of consultancy, but the "architect" as it were of the new build "IT wise" is an IT Director, and has made LOADS of provision for IT. However, he has lumped us (it appears) with HIS system of choice - Mix of Win2k3/Novell Servers and Vista (or hopefully XP if we can persuade) desktops. They're running it up, then they'll hand over to us and withdraw, but be on hand if needed. They're also taking the website, and turning it over to a "uniform look" DNN setup. As it is, for the last 8 years we've been "babysitting" this LEA network - not what I'm used to. At least we will be running the new show. We've just been asked if we can shave the figures...so we've evaluated our stock and said "we can shave a good 50-60k off the costs.."..that was fun. Try asking for input - we did...they didn't think we'd want any. Now we've got quite a good 2 way comms going. We'll also be windowless, and 3 of us to suppot a much larger place than this is now. Bring it on, I say...I like a challenge.

There's a provision for that on the commandline...damned if I can recall what though..Vboxcopy or Vboxclone, or similar. All my home machinery is Vboxed..

What about the USB capable player bit, combined with steadystate? Both free, both useable.

We're going to virtualise our current print server box, and reuse the box for Sharepoint playing (probably) It's a boggo P4/HT 3Ghz / 512mb rig, in a rack case that we inherited. It will only be experimental, mind. I think the VM print server should fair kick bum..

it seems we have more space than the teachers do...it's a running joke that the HOD (teaching) will have to have in his office : a sliding door Folding picnic table Print to PDF and a 1.8inch microdrive Asus EEE and a folding fishing chair in order to work. Heh. You must bear in mind though that up to 18 months back I did have ceiling wee in the design of my office, leading to the "self refilling" coffee cup..

Ohhh, been there. We were located in the corner of IT1 originally, and we both know that pain. Now requisitioned an office next to the teachers one...cut the wall in between to make a doorway. Best thing we've ever done. In the new building, it's been designed by the supreme IT Overseer of the academies we're with...huge server room, offices, shop front/customer service, a repair bay and a "quiet" office round the back for meetings/CMIS/Quiet working, purely for IT Tech.

We only have the odd 1...I have a Vaio here that's got a shredded keyboard and broken jack. Plus 2 Ensis (ex LFT P4/2Ghz) that were classes as "gash" and "doorstops", but are in pretty good nick. Apart from that, I've had a personal one come in full of suncream (yes, you heard) - full disassembly, distilled water board/case wash, soft brush scrub and dry under the hand dryer..that was fun. That really is it...99% of the laptops we hand out/purchase come back in for maintenance, with nothing more than crumbs/thumbprints/dribble on them.

I just had a mail from my mother-in-law telling me that her aged and venerable KS741 based Sempron has just died. So..3 options appear. 1. Get a new board for it. Expensive now, but all parts could be reused. 2. Get a new board/chip/ram bundle. Expensive, but more up to date. 3. Get a cheap second hand PC. Anyone got any suggestions? She's complaining about being terminally short of cash, but..£50 for a socket A board seems silly when you can get clearance older Dell kit for £99ish in places. What would you do?

I said last night- if there's snow, I will be VPN'ing. Last time, the head said "we won't close even if it's up to the windows." He left it so late to start closure that most parents couldn't get through, and busses/taxis/trains had all stopped. Took me 3 hours to do a 10 minute trip. WHERE were the gritters? No idea. No road clearing/treating anywhere at all. Cars abandoned, others playing ice-skating. I went down a dual carriageway hill backwards, because it was deserted, and untreated, and frankly the Astra wanted to do it and wasn't taking any correction. White knuckle for 3 hours. Not fun, never again. Last night was good though...cars and busses sliding on ice everywhere. I had snow mode on, and took a back lane home...but I couldn't resist turning it off and playing with drifting the car. Automatics are fun on ice! I was sat watching from the window of my study as cars slid past, or idiots tried to use throttle inadvisedly. Golf R32s are impressive, but...heh... It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't live by the river, and have to go down a BIG, traffic crowded hill and then up another to get home.

I know that feeling..the Asstrap has a lazy tappet, and in the morning for the first few minutes it sounds like a subaru due to the resultant misfire. Good fun. I will get it replaced, one day.

We've got them in next week...you can SMELL the fear. Me, I find it amusing. IT will work. I'm doing some additional bolstering today and smoothing a few wrinkles, but i'm happy for it to be any time, TBH.
