they're doing the Aspire one with 8gb solidstate drive and 512mb ram with Linux in Tesco for £198... I've just bought the parts to turn my trusty inspiron SSD on the cheap for about £20.

My missus has the Vostro 1000..AMD X2, 2gb, big hard drive etc. Nice. Very nice indeed. I still plod on with my 11 year old Inspiron 3800..heh. She said it was that convinced her - 11 years old, still spot on, no faults.

11-16 secondary, no sixth form 600+ kiddies 200ish PCs IWB and projector in every classroom 20ish printers Cisco VoIP phone system "nodal" server room containing "zone 9 servers" (3 racks, LEA maintained) 3 Auxilliary servers (all VM hosts for accounts, personnel, VPN, print serving etc) Several laptops PC based CCTV 1 incoming laptop trolley+wifi 2 of us. 1 FT Network manager, 1 TT+2 tech (will be FT with luck). Sometimes not got time to break wind (putting it nicely), sometimes idling. In the new building it'll be non-LEA, and loads more kit so there will be a 2nd tech by that point and probably a media tech for the theatre and video stuff.

I have to admit I'd never looked at it. Now the missus has moved our host mail over to it, and I have to admit I quite like it..

make sure it's on a local disk before running install - it refuses for me if I try to run it even off our mapped "IT" share. Local or nothing.

We have ours hanging from a drop pole connected to our lighting rig. Also got a motorised screen. Ours is just a normal NEC VT5something, I think. Been in 3 years now. Hint: Make sure all cables are tight. Our PAT testers loosened one and left it loose - vibrations of kids in/out gradually loosened it until the final Year11 leavers presentation broke the connection and stuffed the presentation right up.. I wish you could get "lowerable" poles though..scaffolding towers for servicing is an arse.

I had one full of a member of staffs family photos that was DOA...freezing worked for the time it took to heat back up. In the end I ran the drive upside down on my desk and kept blatting the thing with the freeze spray we use on chewing gum.

I tend to take them outside to do a change if that happens, and give them a dust out with a paintbrush. Well ventilated then..heh.

IIS? Web server in WinXP/2003, does most things including ASP/ASP.net etc. I don't use it, preferring Apache personally. However, it could be in my future..

We're lucky ATM- the entire LA is all fibre linked, every school, every public building etc. We're replicated around 3 sites and civic offices server farm. Even if we got nuked, the data would be fine. In the new academy site, we've specced up identical servers for our "on site but seperate building" training centre as for the main school, and we'll be running fibre between the 2 and duplicating them nightly. Unless the entire site gets flattened, we should be able to run even after a fire in one building. We'll also have a data safe etc, and I intend to get a hefty disk for off site backup at my place, just for the additional peace of mind.

Yep, very possible. I do it here. Laptops/desktops/servers all use it. Install XP and apps as normal. Remove swap file (keeps ghost small) Go into device manager Right click "computer", update driver, select "I will choose" and set it to "Standard PC". Let it do it's thing and reboot. Then once done, extract and run sysprep, use the line above as suggested to make sysprep/xp do the HAL autodetect, and job jobbed. Ghost, deploy and smile. I redid the "base" student/staff home image yesterday as a universal..took about an hour. Doddle. If you'd like my sysprep inf, let me know and I'll paste the relevant bits in here.

it's news to me that you can do that..heh.. These only get VGA inputs. I've got one in front of me now that I'm contemplating putting under the knife...looks like this one has an iffy inverter.

I've got an E172/173fb 17" TFT screen here that's fully operational, BUT...when it's at a "no input" state, it does the RGB colour cycle thing...looks like one of the kiddies poked the hideen Tech service menu. Anyone got any ideas about how to get it back out of whatever self diagnostic it's in? It works fine, as I say..but the cycling is quite irritating! I've got to tear one down later as well...they really are nasty cheap things..we've got some with degrading TFT panels, and others with popped electronics. I'm combining good panels with good electronics to make good kit out of bad. If all else fails, I'll try swapping out the genesis display logic PCB with another one. Cheers!

Good question, We have several Samsung A10s and Ergo Ensis..we're just deploying them as base level workstations/web browsers for now.

Bog Tiscali off. I switched to Plus.net and they leave them standing, as well as having excellent customer support (7pm on a Sunday, and they call to check I'm connected OK? Damn good) The last straw with the T-monkeys came when I was suffering awful speeds (sub-dialup) for a week, and blocked ports. When I complained that I couldn't mail,FTP or RAdmioin into work over VPN, they told me that if I was VPN'ing for work, I really needed a "business" package as the home packages weren't designed for it. Total bloody monkeys. Their speeds were abysmal at the best of times.

does it kill the wifi, or drop the ADSL to the exchange? Try calling up BT and asking for a line gain boost. My phone is really hissy/crackly with the ADSL running, and I've tried 4 different ADSL filters. If the line power is low, possibly it can't cope too well. it should be a free upgrade..they've never charged me for it.

AV Truecrypt Audacity Movie Maker Photostory and I'm sure there's more..SP3 might find it's way on there as well now.

hah, I agree. Our parent academy does though..4 year rolling programme. Suits us though - we just got 3 suites of P4/3.06Ghz/512mb/TFT machines for nowt. We'll be closing at the end of the summer 09 term, and I'm 99% sure none of our boards etc are coming to the new building. Out of all our SMARTBoards we only have one damaged one, and it does still work. I'm going to put a case to the head if I can for asset redistribution to primaries in the area.

Petrol lumps get EGR as well, or certainly did...supposed to (IIRC) drop the combustion temps.

good point on the coilpack. Aren't they "wasted spark" units? Weak spark on Cyl2 could indeed be coilpack related...or HT lead indeed.

so putting your foot down at low revs gives a misfire-like lumpiness, that vanishes at higher revs? I say...fuel injection system or throttle potentiometer. It the throttle pot is going duff, it can do similar to that..or if the Fi isn't happy, it'll do all manner of oddities. If the management light came on, there should be a fault code stored in the engine management memory that garages can read (not just the dealer, but any garage with the kit) - that will help pinpoint the issue. Mums fiesta used to be a total arse if it went off on one..that was Fi related as well. My Astra was like it when I got it too. I stopped it in traffic one day, did a restart and it pegged itself on the rev limiter and was revving up and down for no reason. In the end, I unplugged every plug I could find, took the battery off to blank the stored memory on the engine and gearbox management, sprayed them all with WD-40, did the same to the throttle body and connections, blasted the intake out with carburettor cleaner, put it all together and took it for a blast down the A5 bypass. Not had a days trouble since.

On the grand scale of it, I'm not qualified. Heh. From 9-32 years I've used an awful lot of kit, helped an awful lot of people, gained an awful lot of experience and skills.. Qualifications wise, I got my GCSE's, my BTEC in IT, and my Cisco A+. People call me "clever"..I don't think I am. I can do cars, electronics, electrics, most "hands on" things I can work through without a manual..PCs are a doddle, but if you put me in to do the site teams job, I'd be lost.

I use Synctoy..heh. I think a lot of the prob is the LEA system setup..the laptops "off net" run like the workstations do when a server bombs out...severe lag, bordering on the unuseable..
