Currently we have Norton 2010 for all PCs. We are getting a windows SBS server 2008 as well and see that Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 includes protection for the server so would appear this may suffice in one package. Our other option is to renew the current Nortons as they expire but that would need a separate purchase for the server. 1. my experience of endpoint is that it markedly slows down PCs when installed (used to have it before our current Nortons but only used the client features). Does anyone else share this experience? 2. What could we do for the server as a separate issue (maybe open source)?

We need a 64 bit platform/proc. for this OS and am thinking of buying a HP PC from DABS which has a 64bit processor (HP PRO 3015 MT Athlon 2 x2 215 2GB 320GB Windows 7 Professional) and just overwrite the OS on there to run SBS. We could add more memory (say 4Gb) and another hard drive for files/backups. So with around £400 we have a server! Are we thinking on the right lines here?

Exchange Server 2007 for Outlook email, messaging, personal information management, and shared calendaring. I expect to backup files from those PCs and have a common file server for common documentation on the server.

OK thanks, I'll go and search for one of these. I heard that SBS 2003 does not integrate with Windows 7 very well - that server is another option. Anyone with experience there?

Can SBS 2008 server be run on an unused 32bit 1Ghz PC? The spec. seems to imply it needed 64bit whatever that is.

Just been to the SWGfL conference. I guess some of you went? Subjects which were of relevance were what SWGfL had to say, Merlin, Becta (good presentations and package), St Davids Primary implementation presentation. Stuff available on SWGfL website.

Ah! this is not what I thought twin load meant! I thought it meant that you could switch between them "live". That's what the Fujitsu site seems to be saying. Am I wrong and that you have to decide which one to use and then that's it?

Our school is going to France and they would like to have an on-line blog so while they are away the teachers can write a diary for the parents and those at home. Has anyone any ideas how this could be done? perhaps a temporary blog or something.

Thanks for your replies. I work at a school but at other places and this enquiry is for a charity volunteer situation where I am helping with IT. I find this forum good for both situations so hope you don't mind me using it for the non school aspect as well! Interesting about the Openfiler and FreeNAS, I willlook further into those. Just wondering if the NAS approach is limiting if we decide to add functionality (like email server)? Wondering about RAID. I would expect to run something like SyncToy if I adapt an existing XPPro PC for this task. I would put in another HD and run SyncToy to copy files. Do not therefor see RAID as necessary?

XP. XP Pro, Vista. Some Laptops which are taken away. Broadband access is provided via a switch and router. At the moment everyones files are somewhat untidy on each PC. We need to get the important ones backed up daily. So I think I need something running in the background which regularly checks each machine and backs up stiff which has changed. I do not want too much activity on the network. It would be nice to be able for others to get at files so I would see most of them being shared and was wondering about the best way of doing this without disturbing current file arrangements on each computer but at the same time making it easy to maintain (my job!) the backups.

We have some 18 PCs but although they are networked they have not been setup as such. I think we need to share and backup files. I could configure one of them to act as a server for this but would think that a dedicated PC may be better. Anyone advise on hardware and software for this (I've heard of windows server 2008 but what about a freebe Linux server)? Perhaps also somewhere to read about networking in allit's detail? Our email and website is external to the site so not sure what integration is needed or necessary there.
