Hi, We won a Smart Response PE system last week in the SMART summer draw... do other schools use this system and how much is it used? Can't believe I have to unscrew all the units and put the batteries in them all.

Browsecontrol for me. Only works after the pupils have logged on though. You also get the ability to turn the computers off in the room and block internet access. We didn't pay much for it.

Mmmm.. they have accepted (up to now) my paypal receipt as proof of purchase so fingers crossed they will allow me to RMA it. Have to say I am craving an Indian call centre... netgear support seems to be in the US and they seem to employ bubbly cheerleaders, well they sound like them. I know I have a Yorkshire accent but I have to repeat myself more times that when I phone Mumbai. And yes... 'I will have a nice day'

I bought the above mentioned switch for £100 off ebay... I am getting cheap switches for the outback areas. Managed to reset it to factory default and noticed its a few versions behind the current firmware... which is when it messed up. On the serial it doesn't get to the stage where I can reset it... just hangs before it gets to the menu pages. The switch recovery tool doesn't list the switch and it doesn't work anyway. Is it bricked? As its an eBay buy I don't have a original invoice so I can't claim the 5 year warranty either

Okay so I figured it out and managed to get Vlans working across my switches which is great. Only thing I can't figure out is how to manage the switch when its on a different Vlan. I assigned port 24 to Vlan2 and took if off Vlan 1. I can ping the switch and access the other devices that I have put into Vlan 2 only but I can't get to the webpage... when i plug into a port on Vlan1 it works again. Also.. whats the difference between port membership and PVID.. I know the definition differences but I can only get it to work when i change the PVID. Reckon when I get this sorted I will be moving some stuff onto VLans... firstly my backup device. Still a bit unsure how you communicate between VLANS... I thought it was just untagging ports on each VLAN.

If I just had ports 1 and 24 plugged in then the laptop at port 1 could ping the network on port 24 when both were on vlan id 2 As soon as I plugged in another cable into the switch into a port on vlan1 then the laptop failed to get replies from the network. I will have to try again tommorow, I don't have any cross over cables so I reckon I need to use the IT suite next door to create a better test bed. I wonder if my little 8 port switch that I was running the network through isn't up to the testing. I am a little worried about some of my switches not being up to handling the traffic if I start using vlans. I've been replacing switches with the GSM7224R kit but some on the outskirts are still just bog standard switches. Thanks for the help. I am going home to try and figure some more stuff out.

This is weird. So. By default all ports are untagged. I remove the tagging from ports 1 and 24 so they are blank I create a new vlan called 2 I make ports 1 and 24 untagged on vlan id 2 So ports 1 and 24 should communicate with each other but the other ports can't see them? If port 24 is untagged or tagged on vlan2 and the switch I am connecting via is just a dumb switch should it still ping? I thought if they were both untagged then traffic would communicate between each of these ports and when its running to another switch and untrunked strip the tagging away

Hi, I am sure as I get older it gets harder to understand stuff. I am playing with my GSM7224 switch as I want to start using VLANs in school but I am struggling to work out the concepts. First off all I want to do is make 2 ports only talk to each other. I have one of these switches down the other end of the school which will relay fibre down to this end so port 23 and 24 will talk to each other and relay traffic but the rest of the ports won't use them. So I am just using switching VLans. I have created a new VLAN id 2 I have removed the U (untagging) from ports 1 and 24 to test this concept on VLAN ID 1 I have put the U on ports 1 and 24 in VLAN ID 2 I cannot ping anything connected to port 1 now. Shouldn't this just work? I tried changing the VLANID to 2 on each of these ports too. What a sec... this started working but... when I plug anything into the other ports I cannot ping anymore. Its very confusing as most of the stuff on the internet seems to be about IOS which I forgot 10 years ago Anyone shed some light on what they think I am doing wrong?

I use Spectrum too but tend to shop around too, the respec toners seem okay and the 88's work fine and are dirt cheap. Recently have been buying from eBay especially older inks.. have got new printheads and a load of No11's last week for about half the retail cost.

I bought a Vigor 120 and it runs like a dog... need to check it without the smoothie when the kids go home but its only getting 1meg throughput.

I've used it for a couple of years, used it to image a dozen machines today. Couldn't be bothered with the samba server so was using a plug in hard drive but now have a 32GB USB and a little 256 USB with clonezilla bootable on it. The images i use are only about 6Gb and it takes 5 minutes to ghost a machine. I did intend to make the 32gb bootable with the script enabled so it would automatically ghost it but haven't had the time. When I have finished with the USB I upload it to a hard drive and save it for later.

We were in this same boat, we sent letters out to parents at the end of last year and have a simple form on the website for them to fill in. After all this we are up to the stage of actually phoning parents up and getting their emails verbally.... total pain in the backside.

I just purchased the powerout replacement from Peachworx. Costs a bit of cach but its dead easy to use. Deploy the control to the computers and then set up schemes for them to use. Simples.

Has anyone had to give the inspectors access to Sims? I have been asked to look at this just in case they want to look at assessment data but it looks like it always gives you view pupil details which I am wary about due to data protection. Seems overly anal but I don't want us to get a bad mark because I went around giving Sims access wily nily

Hi, I am in the process of purchasing a new phone line with ADSL and upgrading our existing line to fibre, mostly because I am in the process of getting a UAG box up and running for remote access. So, how can I make it so certain computers use the new fibre line and others use the older adsl line? I want this because we have boarders who download alot on an evening and I don't want it interferring with school work or remote access. Currently using Schoolguardian. Do I need to look at implementing VLANS or do you reckon a router at the broadband connections would be enough? I am kinda relaxed about allowing boarders on the system but I will be VLanning soon, just need the time to get my head round it.

I am undecided with which route to go with UAG, I am buying a T710 anyway but may scrimp on the spec more and get one of these.. .decisions... decisions... PS. Love the review on the site.. I don't own one, have ever seen one in the flesh but its a 5 star product.

My mom was on a few weeks ago in Leeds. First 3 days she didn't get called.. day 4 told not to come in. The following week she got a 2 days trial and then afterwards they said she didn't have to come back. Asked to come for 2 weeks and only did 2 days.. she was sooooo bored. I moved from Sophos to Nod and managed to get it running after a struggle and now its pretty good. heres what I found works for me * the update web server needs to be moved onto its own IIS, the in built one is useless for a bigger network * I never install via the console.. since I upgraded the console the new layout is awful so all I do is go to the computer and run a batch file tha runs the MSI silently. All new computers automatically get a default profile which updates it. I almost changed back to Sophos but the cleaning and protection seems alot nicer in NOD so I am sticking with it... I really miss the simple console of Sophos.

Currently I have a T710 2 x quad core running 8 sas drives and 16gb ram which is running Sims SQL and Exchange on the same box as well as a couple more small hyper-v clients. I don't intend to keep it on the server forever though. *runs like a dream though* Is it 500 mailboxes? if so then ignore my message.. we are only running 125ish

Just my 2penneth. We signed up for SchoolPost this summer. it doesn't bolt onto Sims like others but rather is a online version where you securely upload the contact info to their website. little rough around the edged but I am very impressed with it so far.

Yep, I can hear something rattling but I can't get it out.. I have banged it about and even started stripping it down but can't see if its the part or just a paper clip.. I can't see where it disappeared down TBH so I am unsure whats rattling. Spent 20 minutes the other day shaking it.. better exercise than the gym

Hi, Does anyone know where I can get some spare rollers or is anyone throwing away a HP 2300 that can rip them off for me. I have attached a photo of the missing bits, the one on the right has the plastic roller attahced at the bottom but there are 2 others that have gone missing/broken. no idea where they have gone but the roller kits and maintennace kits don't include them.

I am on sat at the server.. I can manage mailflow and everything else on the users mailbox. Its not all mailboxes.. just 2 that I need to get into to manage as they are away... the rest of the boxes play nicely
